Ji Xuan got into the car, holding a thermal food container. Ji Yu glanced at it out of the corner of her eye, then casually looked straight ahead. Ten minutes passed, and her father still didn’t react.
Finally, Ji Yu turned her gaze back to the container and, with a tone that oozed feigned generosity, said, “I’ll carry it.”
Ji Xuan: “???”
Ji Yu reached for it, but Ji Xuan quickly lifted it out of her reach and said, “This is filled with sweet soup. I’ll carry it.” He had it made for his son, so why was his daughter trying to steal it for?
Ji Yu froze, then snapped, “Sweet soup? You’re an adult, and you’re bringing soup to a sick person like this? Don’t I have to teach you everything?”
With her hands on her hips, Ji Yu was clearly in a playful mood today. She’d clearly put some thought into her look—her wavy hair was styled with a big red-and-black polka-dot bow. She wore a matching long-sleeve princess dress, white knee-high socks, and shiny black shoes, looking adorable and full of energy.
Ji Xuan was left speechless as he muttered, “I’m not bringing it for your mom to eat.”
Ji Yu pointed at his nose and said, “Why are you like this? She may be terrible, but since we’re going to see her, we should at least do it right! Otherwise, how cold-hearted will we look? Won’t that make us just like her?”
Ji Xuan, clearly confused, asked, “Do you actually want to see her or not?”
Ji Yu was momentarily speechless. After sitting down, she kicked her legs in frustration. “You’re the one who begged me to go see her! You begged me, I swear!”
Ji Xuan glanced at the footprints on the driver’s seat and muttered, “Yes, it was me who asked you to see your mom.”
Ji Yu quieted down, then asked, “Can I have that sweet soup? I didn’t eat breakfast this morning.” She rubbed her stomach, her eyes fixed on the thermal container in Ji Xuan’s hands, filled with longing.
Ji Xuan replied, “I’ll have Secretary Ban get you breakfast after we’re done.”
Ji Yu was taken aback for a moment, then furrowed her brow as she thought it over and asked, “So, who’s the sweet soup for?”
Ji Xuan, wanting to prepare her mentally, replied, “It’s for your little brother.”
Ji Yu didn’t think for a second that he was talking about her actual little brother. She immediately assumed it was some kid from the hospital, and jealousy hit her like a wave!
Pointing at her father’s nose, she shouted, “You never have time to spend with me, but you have time to go visit that little kid! You’re not a good dad—I hate you!”
Ji Xuan didn’t bother responding. Let her say what she wanted. He knew that after a little while, she’d tire herself out and quiet down. Sure enough, after two minutes of ranting, she ran out of things to say. At only six years old, her vocabulary was nowhere near an adult’s, especially when it came to insults.
Having vented everything she could, Ji Yu slumped against the window, gazing outside with a look of despair, feeling like the whole world had abandoned her.
Ji Xuan: “…” What is this? Moping around like some kind of Lin Daiyu, feeling sorry for herself?
Arriving at the hospital, Ji Xuan carried the sweet soup in one hand and held Ji Yu’s hand with the other as they walked inside.
Before they even stepped through the door, they heard Xiao Yu’s voice: “Son, can you get me some water?”
“Son, wipe my mouth for me.”
“Son, sing me a song.”
Ji Xuan: “…”
A surge of inexplicable frustration rose within him. With his temper flaring, he stormed in and confronted Xiao Yu. “Didn’t we hire a nanny for you? Why do you keep making Xiaoguang do everything for you? What kind of mother are you?”
Xiaoguang, in the middle of wiping Xiao Yu’s mouth, turned to look at Ji Xuan. Xiao Yu, with a calm and composed expression, blinked her eyes and said casually, “Aunt Wang went to the take shit.”
Ji Xuan: “…” You’re an educated person, can you at least be a little more tactful?
Xiao Yu chuckled, “What’s wrong with being educated? Does being educated mean I don’t need to go to the bathroom? If I didn’t say ‘shit,’ how would you know she went to take shit?”
Ji Xuan threw his hands up in surrender, “Alright, alright, I get it.”
Having successfully grossed Ji Xuan out, Xiao Yu finally asked with a satisfied smile, “Did you bring the clothes?”
Ji Xuan, still irritated, snapped, “Is that all you can think about—the clothes?”
Just as Xiao Yu was about to ask what else should she remember?, she suddenly noticed the little girl next to Ji Xuan and gave her a more serious look.
Ji Yu immediately gripped Ji Xuan’s hand tightly, too nervous to move a muscle.
After a couple of seconds of studying her, Xiao Yu said, “Ji Xuan, is this your daughter? She doesn’t look anything like you.”
Ji Xuan: “…”
Ji Yu: “…”
Then, without warning, Ji Yu burst into tears, crying loudly, “Waaaah~~~”
Ji Xuan yelled in frustration, “You idiot, she is your daughter!!!”
Xiao Yu studied Ji Yu again, then chuckled, “Ji Yu, huh? You don’t look anything like me either!”
This made Ji Yu cry even louder.
Ji Xuan: “…” Oh wow, my bad for being like Grandma!
After a while, with some effort, Ban Zhenye managed to calm Ji Yu down. Xiao Yu, feeling a rare moment of guilt, said, “Ji Yu, you’re so much prettier than when you were younger.”
Ji Yu stomped her foot dramatically and huffed, “Hmph! Now you’re trying to be nice to me? Too late.”
Xiao Yu added, “You’ve just gotten more emotional, haven’t you?”
Ji Yu glared at Xiao Yu and slowly puckered her lips, looking thoroughly unimpressed.
Ban Zhenye: “…” I just got her calmed down.
Xiao Yu’s tone shifted as she said, “But, there’s nothing wrong with girls crying.”
At that, Ji Yu’s lips curled into a pout again. She walked over to Xiao Yu and said, “My dad asked me to come visit you, so here I am.”
Xiao Yu glanced at Ji Xuan with a sly smile, then turned her attention back to Ji Yu.
Ji Yu then asked, “What happened to you? Dad said you were in a car accident. Is it serious?”
Xiao Yu smiled and replied, “It’s not that bad. Just a few injuries!”
Ji Yu believed her and said, “Well, it’s your fault for not being careful! The teacher always says, ‘Walk on the right side, stop at red lights, go at green lights.’”
Xiao Yu responded with a drawn-out “Oh, oh, oh…” then asked, “Ji Yu, have you started elementary school?”
Ji Yu proudly replied, “Yep, I’m in first grade now. And my teacher, Ms. Yi, really likes me!”
Xiao Yu gave a mysterious smile and asked, “Is it Yi Lanya?”
Ji Yu was surprised, “You know Ms. Yi?”
Xiao Yu didn’t answer. Ji Yu then looked at her and asked, “Why aren’t you getting up?”
Xiao Yu let out an “Oh,” then turned her head and said, “Only my head can move now.”
Ji Yu: “…”
Xiao Yu watched as Ji Yu’s eyes slowly reddened, and then, with a sharp, piercing wail, she burst into tears.
Ji Xuan, feeling heartbroken, shot Xiao Yu a glare before picking up Ji Yu to comfort her.
Through her sobs, Ji Yu asked, “Dad, is Mom going to die?”
Ji Xuan replied, “She’s not going to die.”
Ji Yu cried even harder, “You’re lying! Wah~~~”
Ji Xuan looked at Xiao Yu, who wore an innocent expression. With great effort, Ji Xuan finally managed to calm Ji Yu down.
Through her sniffles, Ji Yu said to Xiao Yu, “I’ll ask Dad to hire someone to take care of you.”
Xiao Yu nodded, then suddenly exclaimed, “Oh, by the way, Ji Yu, look—I’ve given you a little brother.”
Ji Yu froze, staring blankly at the little boy standing by the bed, who was looking at her with envy.
Then Ji Yu suddenly remembered the sweet soup her father had brought up earlier. In an instant, she understood the meaning of the sweet soup. Furious, she spun around and glared at Ji Xuan. “You old man, always liking the new and discarding the old!”
Ji Xuan: “…” Hmph, Xiao Yu. Women.
