Chapter 13: Battle with the Wild Boar King

Wu Shaochen stared blankly at the auction house, bewildered. “Was that really so fast?” he thought. “I just clicked confirm, and my hand wasn’t even down before it was gone. Did I set the price too low, or are the rich players just too much?”

The shoes had dropped from his first turtle kill, a pair of canvas shoes he’d worn ever since. When he killed a toad and got another pair of shoes, he finally swapped them out, thinking he’d list them for 10,000 to see if anyone would buy. If no one did, he’d lower the price—after all, they were second-hand shoes he’d worn, and he didn’t want to rip anyone off.

“Looks like I underestimated the value of equipment,” he mused, surprised to see second-hand shoes so sought after.

Glancing at the toad boots he had just picked up—Movement Speed +5, Defense +3, with a movement speed of 35 and defense of 18—he felt pretty good. Time to keep hunting.

For the next two hours, Wu Shaochen focused on farming toads, killing 77 of them in total. During this time, he got three pieces of equipment.

  • Toad Belt: Health +40, Defense +4
  • Toad Helm: Health +40, Defense +4
  • Toad Ring: Health +20, Physical Attack +8, Attack Speed +1%

The ring, which granted an additional 20 health, was useful, so he decided to wear it and didn’t sell it.

He then listed his old Wild Boar Belt and Wild Boar Helm at the auction house for 10 minutes of bidding.

After 10 minutes, both pieces were sold for 30,000 each.

As player levels rose and their equipment improved, the value of the Wild Boar set had decreased significantly.

“Finally bought one,” the woman wearing a veil sighed, “I didn’t expect white gear prices to still be so high even though the server’s been open for a while.”

“Yeah, now everyone knows white gear has varying stats, so high-stat items naturally cost more. But it won’t be outrageous; once players level up and get better gear, the prices will drop. Newbie village gear changes every hour,” Liu Shu commented from the side.

“I wonder who’s out there killing such high-level monsters. Could it be a big guild with a lot of people?” the woman mused.

“It’s unlikely,” Liu Shu responded. “If it was a big group, their presence would be known. Plus, they’d need the gear themselves. I don’t think the team selling these items would be larger than five people, and it could very well be just one person.”

The woman nodded, agreeing with Liu Shu’s analysis. Yet, a fleeting thought crossed her mind about a figure she had seen earlier.

“Wait, wasn’t he coming from the direction of the Wild Boar Forest?” she suddenly exclaimed.

“Could it be him?” she thought to herself. She was determined to keep an eye out for this person the next time they crossed paths.

Meanwhile, Wu Shaochen was completely unaware that someone had already noticed him. He was busy reviewing the stats of the equipment he had just equipped after leveling up, thinking about how to distribute his 5 stat points.

Name: Chen Feng
Level: 6
Health: 350
Mana: 110
Physical Attack: 20
Magical Attack: 10
Physical Defense: 18
Magical Defense: 5
Movement Speed: 35
Attack Speed: 8% (7% from 35 agility + 1% from the ring)
Experience: 3/4000

Strength: 5
Intelligence: 5
Constitution: 5
Root Bone: 5
Spirit: 5
Agility: 30

Skills: Insight
Talent: Toxic Source: Deals 23 points of true damage per second for 60 seconds to the target, can stack up to 1 layer.

“I’ll put the 5 points into Constitution,” he decided. “I’ll focus on fighting the Wild Boar King now, and with 35 movement speed, I’m good to go. Adding 5 points to Constitution will give me 400 health, which will heal 4 health per second. Otherwise, I’d only recover 3 health per second with 399 health.”

He immediately allocated the 5 points to Constitution, bringing his health up to 400. Checking his inventory, he saw that he still had 9 healing potions and had just picked up 6 more. With 15 potions in total, he felt ready to face the Wild Boar King—a boss he’d been eyeing for a while.

After reviewing the Wild Boar King’s stats again, he figured out that with 250 attack, he would take 230 damage per hit since his defense was 20. With his health recovery rate of 4 per second, he could survive, and he was confident he could avoid the Wild Boar King’s Wild Charge skill—he knew it well enough to dodge it. The real challenge would be the 30-second berserk phase, but he was prepared to tough it out and reapply his poison if necessary.

“Alright, let’s do this,” he said, setting off toward the Wild Boar King’s location.

Upon seeing the massive boar again, Wu Shaochen felt a little intimidated. Though his stats had improved, he still felt the pressure from its massive size.

As soon as he entered the Wild Boar King’s aggro range, the boar roared and charged at him with a Wild Charge.

“What the hell? The animation is different now?” Wu Shaochen thought, quickly dodging the charge. Normally, the boar would swipe its front legs before charging, but this time it just roared and charged without warning.

Wu Shaochen managed to dodge, and while the Wild Boar King was recovering from its skill, he landed a hit on its backside and quickly backed away. The poison damage kept ticking away on the Wild Boar King.

Normally, it would take about half an hour to kill the boar with poison alone, but during the berserk phase, he couldn’t get close. Wu Shaochen kept his distance and calculated that once the poison wore off, the Wild Boar King would start healing. The boar had 50,000 health, and with the ability to heal 500 health per second, it would be tough to finish the fight.

But Wu Shaochen was confident. He was well prepared with potions and knew he could outlast the boar.

Over the next half hour, Wu Shaochen expertly dodged the Wild Boar King’s Wild Charges, landing a hit whenever he could. The boar went berserk six times, and once, when the poison was almost gone, Wu Shaochen took the hit and dealt more damage, losing 355 health in the process. Fortunately, the boar didn’t hit him twice in quick succession.

Finally, after more than half an hour, the Wild Boar King’s health dropped to 10%. It used its final life-saving skill, but it didn’t do much. The boar stood still for 10 seconds without recovering any health. This boar was certainly the worst among all the Wild Boar Kings in the newbie village.
