Chapter 24: The War God Hall
Wu Shaochen quickly finished his meal and returned home. He put on the helmet and logged back into the game. Time was of the essence; he couldn’t afford to waste a second. If he wanted to be stronger than others in the game, he had to work harder. The wealthy players had gaming warehouses and didn’t need to log off, but for him, the only option was to grind relentlessly.
Once he logged in, he found himself standing in the Grand Hall of Career Change in Jinling City. The first thing he did was check his inventory. He hadn’t yet looked at the system rewards, which included two skill books. When he saw the two books in his inventory, especially one golden skill book, Wu Shaochen’s breath quickened. He had been in too much of a rush earlier to pay much attention.
[Immortal Body] Special Passive Skill (Unique): For every monster killed that is not lower than the player’s level, increase maximum health by 1 point permanently.
“This has to be at least as good as my talent skill, and it’s a unique skill. Looks like fate is guiding me to rise. A thief with this much health would be terrifying in burst damage. If this thief has more health than a tank, what kind of experience would that be for the opponent? How desperate would they feel?”
If this skill were to be sold, the price would be unimaginable. But such skills definitely couldn’t be sold. This was a unique skill, and now that he didn’t lack money, there was no way he would sell it. Trembling with excitement, he pulled the valuable skill book from his bag and memorized the skill. When he saw the skill appear in his skill tab, he finally felt at ease. If he hadn’t learned it, it would have felt too dreamlike.
Next, he looked at the other skill book in his inventory:
[Void]: Clears all negative effects on the player, allowing the body to enter a void state where it cannot be targeted for 1 second. Consumes 100 magic points. Cooldown: 5 minutes. Learning requirement: Assassin.
Another god-tier skill. Wu Shaochen immediately learned it. Both of these skills were priceless, and it was definitely worth enduring hunger to earn them.
After learning these skills, along with the basic assassin skills, his skill tab now had six skills.
Looking at these skills, Wu Shaochen was itching to go grind monsters, but he decided to first explore the city, see if there were any quests, and get a feel for things.
He walked out of the Career Change Hall and onto the streets of Jinling City. The buildings here were mostly everyday shops—weapon stores, clothing shops, jewelry stores, pharmacies, and general goods stores.
He entered the weapon store and checked the available items. His face immediately darkened. There were all sorts of white-grade equipment for sale. That meant he wouldn’t be able to sell white-grade items anymore.
Luckily, he had sold all the white-grade gear from the new player village and made a decent profit. Thinking this, he shrugged it off. Besides, after level 10, there would be equipment level requirements for white-grade gear, so players wouldn’t pay much attention to it.
In addition to buying and selling weapons, the weapon shop also offered life skills, such as weapon crafting. If players learned weapon crafting, they could create their own weapons. Players could learn up to three life skills, but Wu Shaochen had no intention of learning them. It was too time-consuming, especially early in the game, and the crafted equipment wasn’t worth the effort. He’d rather spend the time killing bosses.
He didn’t bother with the clothing or jewelry stores and headed to the general goods store. He bought two return scrolls for 10 silver coins each. Expensive, but necessary. Then, something caught his eye—a map scroll for 1 gold coin.
“What is this thing, so expensive?” Wu Shaochen took a look at it:
[Map Scroll]: Activates the map function upon use. This scroll records monster distribution within a 10-kilometer radius of Jinling City.
“I knew it, there’s no map in the game. It’s lucky that the new player village isn’t too big, or I’d get lost. Now, I have to spend money to buy the map scroll just to activate the map feature. 1 gold coin—this is a rip-off.”
Though he grumbled, Wu Shaochen didn’t hesitate to spend the money. With over 90 gold coins in his pocket, he could afford it. Moreover, every player would need this.
After buying it, he used the scroll, and the map function lit up. The map displayed information on monsters within a 10-kilometer radius of Jinling City. Anything beyond that was black, and players would need to explore to uncover it. The map would automatically record areas the player visited.
“Not bad, it’s worth the price,” Wu Shaochen murmured, then continued exploring Jinling City. The city was large, with not only functional NPC areas but also residential zones where various NPCs lived. Some NPCs had special quests, but they were few and far between. Special quests usually offered great rewards, but they were based on chance.
Next, there was a player trading area where players could set up stalls for free trade without transaction fees. It was much better than the auction house. Players could also buy shops in this area, selling equipment without having to stay at the stall. However, the cost of a shop was extremely high—over 10,000 gold coins—so Wu Shaochen didn’t give it much thought. The auction house was much more convenient.
He continued his tour, passing by the arena, taverns, and city halls. Everything was so overwhelming.
Eventually, he came across an imposing building with the words “War God Hall” inscribed in large characters. Intrigued, Wu Shaochen entered.
Inside the massive hall stood lifelike statues of various figures, with a path leading to a whirlpool-shaped portal at the end.
He approached one of the statues—a man—and read the inscription:
“Year 356 of the Holy Light Era, the War God Grieb, single-handedly killed dozens of Star-tier monsters and held back an Immortal-tier monster for two hours before dying. He was posthumously named War God and entered the War God Hall.”
Moving to another statue of a noble-looking woman with silver hair, he read the inscription:
“Year 487 of the Holy Light Era, the Ice Mage Goddess, by using a forbidden curse, froze three thousand miles, sealing all the evil monsters and their million-strong army. She made a great contribution to humanity’s survival and was posthumously named the Ice Mage Goddess and entered the War God Hall.”
Wu Shaochen marveled at the grandeur of the War God Hall and wondered what kind of quests and rewards awaited him inside.
