Chapter 30: Killing the Black Bear King
“Haha, high defense, high health—this is my favorite type of BOSS,” Wu Shaochen said happily. However, he quickly realized that this guy’s damage shouldn’t be underestimated either. His basic attack could deal over six hundred damage, his strike dealt over nine hundred, and his Earth Splitter could do over a thousand. High-level BOSSes are really something.
Looking at his own stats, his health had reached 2307, and his physical defense was still 111. With that, surviving wasn’t an issue. He had plenty of healing potions, and he even had a Void skill, so he felt confident.
He then activated his Speed Burst and dashed forward, landing two strikes, applying two layers of poison. The poison dealt 520 damage per second, and in one minute, it would drain 31,200 health from the BOSS.
He didn’t dare to fully stack the poison, though. With Speed Burst active, his attack speed was 80%, so two strikes were enough to let the Black Bear King land one basic attack. If he stacked three layers, he’d have to endure two basic attacks and possibly a skill attack, which would mean he’d be in danger. So, after two strikes, Wu Shaochen quickly turned and ran.
However, before he could get far, the ground suddenly cracked open. The crack quickly chased after him, launching him into the air.

After landing, Wu Shaochen quickly got up and ran, thankful that the Black Bear King hadn’t caught up yet. If it had, he’d have no choice but to use his Void skill. One basic attack and one skill would have easily drained over 1700 of his health, leaving him with just over 400 health. As expected, no Bronze BOSS should be underestimated.
Seeing the Black Bear King chasing him, Wu Shaochen, with a “let’s try it” attitude, activated his Stealth. He quickly disappeared from sight, and the Black Bear King scratched its head and turned around, running off toward the soldier.
“Damn, how is this fool still here? Doesn’t he know to run?” Wu Shaochen said in disbelief. He had no choice but to summon his pet Silver Taisho again to tank the damage, then took out a large red healing potion and drank it. Watching Silver Taisho being chased by the Black Bear King, Wu Shaochen quickly deactivated his Stealth to draw the aggro, then started running in circles with the Black Bear King. With a deadweight following him, he couldn’t use Stealth anymore. The soldier might have a hidden quest, so he couldn’t let it die.
The Black Bear King was still strong, but unfortunately, Wu Shaochen’s sneaky tactics were too much. The BOSS couldn’t catch up, and the poison was disgusting. Eventually, the Black Bear King was forced to collapse.
“Ding, congratulations, you have killed the Bronze BOSS [Black Bear King], earning 200 reputation points, 24,000 experience points, and your pet Silver Taisho gained 6,000 experience points.”
“Ding, congratulations, your pet [Silver Taisho] has leveled up to level 12.”
“Ding, Undying Physique activated, maximum health increased by 1 point, and your Undying Physique has increased by 318 points.”
Looking at the massive body of the Black Bear King lying on the ground, Wu Shaochen rubbed his nose. “Damn, that was a bit tough. 300,000 health, and it took more than ten minutes to bring it down. Guess the talent really is powerful.”
Wu Shaochen looked at his experience: 29,710/50,000. “Damn, BOSSes really give high experience. Even though BOSS experience doesn’t scale with level difference, a single Black Bear King gives 30,000 experience. Even if 20% goes to Silver Taisho, that’s still 24,000. My experience increased by half in one go.”
He shook his head in resignation and quickly picked up all the loot dropped by the BOSS.
This Black Bear King had a much lower drop rate than the Silver Wolf King. It seemed like first-time drops had a fixed drop rate. Wu Shaochen looked at his bag and saw a total of 2 gold coins, 76 silver, 2 Bronze equipment pieces, 3 Black Iron equipment pieces, 4 White equipment pieces, and a special scroll.
“Such stinginess!” Wu Shaochen complained. But he didn’t care. As long as there was equipment, it was good. He glanced at the equipment.
[Black Bear King Armor] Bronze Level: +600 Health, +30 Physical Defense, +30 Magic Defense, Added Attributes: +18 Constitution, +20 Root Bone. Required to Wear: Warrior, Shield Warrior.
[Black Bear King Boots] Bronze Level: +50 Movement Speed, +30 Physical Defense, +30 Magic Defense, Added Attributes: +18 Agility, +15 Root Bone. Required to Wear: All Classes.
[Bear King Bracelet] Black Iron Level: +50 Physical Attack, +6% Attack Speed, Added Attributes: +12 Agility. Required to Wear: Physical Class.
[Bear King Necklace] Black Iron Level: +60 Physical Attack, +5% Ranged Output Damage, Added Attributes: +15 Strength. Required to Wear: Archer.
[Bear King Leggings] Black Iron Level: +300 Health, +20 Physical Defense, +10 Magic Defense, Added Attributes: +12 Constitution. Required to Wear: All Classes.
As expected, only job requirements mattered before level 10, as players hadn’t transitioned yet. After level 10, there would be job-specific requirements. This system worked out well since it saved the trouble of getting high-level equipment that couldn’t be equipped.
Wu Shaochen could equip the boots, bracelet, and leggings. The necklace and armor could only be sold. He’d check if there were a lot of people around when he got back and sell them at the auction if there were.
The bracelet was almost good enough to equip right away, and the boots and leggings replaced the Silver Wolf King equipment. While both were Black Iron-level, the Black Bear King’s leggings were clearly superior to the Silver Wolf King’s.
Looking at the special scroll, [Petrified Skin Scroll]: After use, defense is increased by 100% and nearby targets receive 50% reduced physical damage for 5 minutes.
…
What the hell? A scroll instead of a skill? If it were a skill, it would be amazing, but a scroll just feels like a waste.
After collecting all the loot, Wu Shaochen went to the dying soldier and said, “Hi, is there anything I can do for you?”
The soldier looked at Wu Shaochen, suddenly excited. “Warrior, thank you for saving me, but I’m already dying. I am a member of the Jinling City Guard, and there is something urgent that needs to be reported to the city lord. Could you please deliver this letter to the city lord for me?” He then handed Wu Shaochen a letter.
“Ding, Vice Captain of the Guard Ji Rui has issued a quest: Deliver the letter to the city lord of Jinling City. Quest reward: Unknown. Do you accept?”
“Damn, unknown reward? You’re not gonna make me run for nothing, are you?” Wu Shaochen thought, but seeing the soldier nearly dead and begging him with a desperate expression, he couldn’t bear to refuse. He nodded and said, “Alright, I’ll help you.” He took the letter, and the soldier showed a relieved expression before quickly passing away.
“That’s how it ends?” Wu Shaochen shook his head helplessly, then took out a Return Scroll to teleport back to town.
“Ding, the quest is in progress. You cannot use the Return Scroll.”
“Damn!!” Wu Shaochen stared in disbelief. Was the Return Scroll useless? It looks like he would have to run back to town manually.
With a sigh, Wu Shaochen resignedly began running back to the city, thankful that his speed was high, or he’d have wasted even more time.
