Chapter 29: Dazzling the Ex-Husband’s Eyes
Wang Jianguo not only became a father, but also the father of three sons all at once—it’s impossible he wasn’t overjoyed.
Wang Jianguo took the closest child, while the nurses held the other two. “Doctor, how’s my wife? When will she be out?”
“She’ll be out soon. Don’t worry, mother and children are safe and sound, everything went very smoothly. Take the babies back to the ward now.” The nurses couldn’t hold them indefinitely; they had other things to do. Getting them to the ward was already a favor.
Those nearby, witnessing the birth of triplets, showed a surprisingly uniform reaction of disbelief and envy. “Triplets?!”
“My goodness! I’ve never seen triplets before!”
“Me neither! I’m almost eighty, and this is a first for me. They’re incredibly lucky.”
…
Huang Yuelan quickly regained consciousness and immediately asked, “Doctor, where are my babies? How are they?”
“You’re finally awake! Don’t worry, your husband has taken them to the ward. You married a good man; he’s been waiting outside, constantly worried about you.” The doctors and nurses hoped she would cherish such a good man; good men were hard to find.
Huang Yuelan felt a surge of warmth. She felt everything she’d done was worth it.
“Doctor, may I ask if the third child is a boy or a girl?” Huang Yuelan secretly hoped for a daughter, completing her family. Two brothers and a sister—the brothers could protect their sister. How wonderful.
“Congratulations! They’re all boys. I guarantee your mother-in-law will be overjoyed.” Although gender equality was promoted, many people secretly preferred sons.
After all, in the production team, people earned work points through labor, and grain was distributed based on these points. Men, with their greater strength, usually earned more than women. Moreover, women married into other families and rarely had a say, making it difficult to support their natal families. Economic foundation determines the superstructure; therefore, girls were often less valued.
Huang Yuelan felt a chill. Heaven had given her triplets, but why not give her a daughter?
“Thank you, you’ve all worked so hard!” Huang Yuelan knew delivering three babies, one of whom presented feet first, must have exhausted the doctors.
“Not at all! It’s our job.”
Although she had given birth, Huang Yuelan hadn’t had a chance to properly look at her babies. She went straight to the ward.
Wang Jianguo was worried. He had three children to care for, with no help, and couldn’t leave to check on his wife.
He could carry one child, but he couldn’t leave the others in the ward. His wife wouldn’t like that.
“Are these our sons?” Huang Yuelan asked, her face filled with maternal love.
Wang Jianguo, seeing his wife, exclaimed joyfully, “Wife, you’re back! How are you? Lie down and rest.” He quickly placed the baby he was holding on the bed.
Huang Yuelan smiled. “I’m fine. I want to see our sons.”
Although the babies weren’t particularly pretty yet, they were her flesh and blood, and she found them incredibly adorable.
“Their eyebrows, their noses… exactly like their father’s. They’ll be handsome men when they grow up.” Huang Yuelan was very satisfied after observing them.
Before their birth, she had imagined what her children would look like. She hadn’t dared to hope for much, only wishing they would be healthy, with all limbs intact and no birthmarks.
Now, not only were her three sons healthy, but they were also handsome!
“Wife, don’t push yourself. Rest in bed. I can hold the babies for you to look at.” Wang Jianguo knew the postpartum period was the weakest time for a woman and she needed proper rest to avoid postpartum illnesses.
Huang Yuelan, exhausted from childbirth, was holding on by sheer willpower. After seeing her children, she lay down to rest.
“Husband, is there anything to eat?” After delivery, Huang Yuelan suddenly felt ravenous.
“Yes, I’ll get it. I bought a lot of your favorite things. I’ll go get some millet porridge later. It’ll be warm and comforting, and you can sleep well.” Wang Jianguo quickly retrieved his food supplies.
Huang Yuelan then started eating. Wang Jianguo had brought a lot of food, even rice, flour and a pot.
After all, this was a month’s worth of food, but she hadn’t expected the babies to arrive so soon.
Seeing his wife eating dry biscuits and candied fruit, Wang Jianguo thought they were nothing compared to millet porridge and buns. “Wife, I’ll go get you some millet porridge and buns.”
“You don’t have any food coupons, how will you buy them?” If they could buy food at the hospital, they wouldn’t have brought so much with them.
Wang Jianguo: “Don’t worry, I’ve arranged it with the woman next door. We’ll trade our grain.”
To get his wife warm millet porridge and sweet buns, Wang Jianguo traded his grain at double the price at the supply and marketing cooperative. Even then, he felt he’d gotten a good deal.
Although the babies were born that day, returning to the First Production Team on the same day was impossible. It was already afternoon, and it would be dark by the time they got home.
The night air was cool, and saving on hospital fees wasn’t worth risking their health.
Soon, Wang Jianguo returned with two bowls of millet porridge, three eggs, and two large buns, traded for his own grain.
“Wife, drink some millet porridge. It’s freshly made and still hot. They say drinking millet porridge helps with lactation.” Before Wang Jianguo finished, Huang Yuelan grabbed the porridge and drank it down.
She finished one bowl and then the other. She knew she needed to produce enough milk for her three sons.
The other pregnant women, seeing Huang Yuelan’s plentiful sweets, millet porridge, eggs, and buns, were incredibly envious.
There were no private or semi-private rooms; a room was crammed with over a dozen pregnant women.
Why did she have such good treatment?
In the entire hospital, there was no one else with such good treatment.
However, they also understood that her good treatment wasn’t without reason—she had given birth to three sons.
Thinking this, they felt better.
Soon, one of the sons woke up.
Wang Jianguo quickly picked him up and tried to soothe him, but the baby continued to cry. One baby crying wasn’t bad, but the other two woke up, hearing their brother’s cries, and joined in.
The three little fellows, as if in agreement, cried one after another, each louder than the last.
Although premature, they were healthy, with strong lungs to cry so loudly.
“Check if they’ve wet or soiled their diapers. Babies cry only when they’ve soiled themselves or are hungry,” Huang Yuelan reminded him.
Wang Jianguo checked the eldest’s diaper and found some dark matter.
After changing the eldest’s diaper, he checked the second’s, who hadn’t soiled himself but was hungry.
“Wife, try feeding him. He’s probably hungry.”
Huang Yuelan took the baby and began breastfeeding, imitating others.
The baby instinctively found the nipple and started sucking vigorously, making smacking and sighing sounds.
After a while, the second son fell asleep, looking content.
After changing the third son’s diaper, he continued to cry, so Huang Yuelan breastfed him.
After the second and third sons finished feeding, they slept soundly. Huang Yuelan then had Wang Jianguo bring the eldest, who was also likely hungry. She didn’t want to favor the crying babies.
The three babies finished feeding perfectly, neither too full nor hungry.
Due to prematurity, each baby weighed only about five kilograms, so they didn’t eat much. However, their appetites would increase with their weight.
For now, breastfeeding was enough, but soon it wouldn’t be. Huang Yuelan asked Wang Jianguo to buy some formula.
Formula was a rare item, unavailable in their production team, only in the county town, so they had to buy it in advance.
Wang Jianguo bought Red Flag brand formula, 1.2 yuan per can, more expensive than meat, but he had to buy it to raise his sons.
With enough formula, the next day, Wang Jianguo pushed his wife and children back to the First Production Team.
At the entrance of the village, many villagers saw them.
Everyone was envious and rushed over to take a look.
“Congratulations! Our production team’s hero is a father, and he has three sons!”
“Triplets! These babies are so handsome!”
Sun Gousheng watched from afar, his eyes filled with envy, jealousy, and resentment.
