Chapter 20 Moving!
The next day, Mo Haoyue went to the county town early to pick up his comrade’s nephew.
Three adults and three boys spent another half an hour packing before they managed to move everything into the yard.
Zhang Hongxia even wanted to take things they couldn’t wear or use anymore, but Mi Xia refused, and in the end, only bedding, kitchen food, and daily necessities were taken.
Mi Xia said she didn’t want a lot of things; otherwise, it would take another hour to move everything.
Everyone only took a few clean pieces of clothing with few patches; Mi Xia wouldn’t even let them take clothes with multiple layers of patches, which made Zhang Hongxia feel heartbroken.
Finally, there was the sewing machine. After buying the sewing machine, Zhang Hongxia made school bags and children’s clothes. Mo Zhixia and Mi Xiaohuan wore clothes made by Zhang Hongxia, looking incredibly cute.
Early that morning, Mi Xia took out two Bragi dresses she had bought yesterday and gave one to Zhang Hongxia. It truly is “clothes make the man”—with new clothes, her whole demeanor changed.
After a while, a truck drove towards them. At the gate, Mo Haoyue got off the truck. The driver was a young man in his twenties named Zhong Ye. Behind the truck were many people from the village who came to watch the excitement.
As soon as Zhong Ye got off the truck, he was stunned by Mi Xia. “Where did this fairy come from?” Mo Haoyue patted the back of his head, causing him to touch his head sheepishly.
“That’s your sister-in-law, don’t stare,” Mo Haoyue said, staring at Zhong Ye.
Zhong Ye’s face burned up; he was caught staring at someone’s wife.
The villagers were also excited. Yesterday afternoon, they saw the Mi family buy a bicycle and a sewing machine, and last night, they saw Mi Xia’s in-laws causing a commotion. Today, there’s a truck. They have enough gossip for the next two weeks.
Mi Qiu didn’t expect the village chief to come too, and quickly greeted him, “Village chief, why did you come? Come in and sit, it’s so chaotic outside.”
“I came to take a look. Are you all moving?”
Mi Qiu touched his head embarrassedly, “I only found out last night that my brother-in-law bought a house in the county town, and he insisted that our whole family move there.”
Village chief: “Then you go ahead and get busy. Later, bring your brother-in-law to my house for a visit?”
Mi Qiu: “Okay, I’ll go with my brother-in-law after I’m done cleaning up.”
Mi Qiu sent the village chief to the gate before returning to the yard to help with the move.
“Village chief, are they moving? Where are they moving to?” Passerby A asked.
“To the county town. Alright, everyone disperse. What are you all doing here? Don’t you have work to do at home?”
The crowd dispersed. The village chief chased them away; who would want to stay and get scolded?
Passerby B: “Hey, why are they all moving to the city? What are they going to do in the city?”
Passerby: “Didn’t you hear? Mi Qiu is going to work at the motor factory. That’s a secure job.”
Passerby B: “I haven’t heard of that. How did you know?”
Passerby: “Yesterday, Mi Qiu went to the village chief’s house, and I happened to be there too, and I overheard it.”
Passerby A: “Then why are they moving? Do they have a house in the county town?”
Passerby E: “Who knows? Maybe they’re renting.”
Soon, the family loaded everything from the yard onto the truck, and the livestock had all been slaughtered.
Mi Qiu: “Brother-in-law, the village chief came by earlier and asked me to bring you to his house for a while. What do you think…?”
Mo Haoyue: “Big brother, take two chickens, let’s go together.”
At the village chief’s door, Mi Qiu called out, “Village chief, are you home?”
Village chief: “Yes, yes, come in quickly. I’ve brewed two cups of tea. Come in and sit.”
Mi Qiu handed the chickens to the village chief, saying, “Village chief, don’t bother, we’ll be leaving soon.”
Village chief: “Although you’re all moving away, you can still come back often if you have time. This will always be your home.”
“If you need my help in the future, just ask. Although I can’t help with much, I’ll help if I can. Maybe I’ll need your help someday.”
The village chief looked at Mo Haoyue as he spoke. Even if Mi Qiu was foolish, he could understand that the village chief was asking Mo Haoyue for a promise.
Mo Haoyue: “Okay, if the village chief needs anything, go to the county town and find Mi Xia. She will write to me. I’ll leave you an address in the county town? But I don’t want too many people to know this address.”
“Don’t worry, absolutely no one else will know.” The village chief smiled, his wrinkles bunching together.
Mo Haoyue wrote down the address and handed it to the village chief. “Then, Village chief, you keep busy. My brother and I will go now.”
In the yard.
Mo Haoyue: “Wife, is everything packed?”
Mi Xia: “Yes, everything that needs to be moved is moved. I’ve been waiting for you and my brother to come back.”
Mo Haoyue got into the passenger seat. “Zhong Ye, let’s go.”
It was the first time Mi Qiu’s family rode in a truck. The children were overjoyed, their mouths stretched to their ears, looking around excitedly.
Mi Qiu and Zhang Hongxia’s eyes held a hint of reluctance; after all, they had lived here for so many years.
Amidst the children’s laughter and the adults’ reluctance, the truck arrived at the small western-style building.
Mo Haoyue and Zhong Ye unloaded the things from the truck, while Mi Qiu, Mi Xia, and Zhang Hongxia found places for them. The little ones ran to the small yard to play on the swing.
Seeing that it was almost time, Mi Xia went to the kitchen to steam rice and cook fish, shrimp, ribs, tomato and egg soup, wood ear mushrooms with eggs, braised pork, and braised pork intestines.
After all, Zhong Ye came to help, so they had to treat him to a meal.
Mo Haoyue: “Zhong Ye, go and help bring your uncle over. I still need to tidy up this mess.”
Zhong Ye: “Okay, Brother Mo, I’ll go now. I guarantee I’ll bring Uncle over safely.”
Half an hour later, Zhong Ye brought Zhong Xinfu safely. Another person joined the moving team.
There were many small items, and it wasn’t until Mi Xia called for dinner that everyone stopped. They washed their hands while Mi Xia served the dishes.
Zhong Xinfu and his son smelled the aroma and lost interest in working. As soon as they heard it was time to eat, they quickly went to wash their hands, leaving Mo Haoyue and the others stunned.
Zhang Hongxia went to the kitchen to serve them rice, and Mi Xia quickly put a glass of water in front of everyone.
Zhong Ye and Zhong Xinfu had guessed what delicious food was being made from the aroma, and now, seeing the abundance of dishes, their eyes lit up.
One of them had never seen so much delicious food in his life, and the other hadn’t eaten so much delicious food in years. Even at banquets, there was less meat and more vegetables; this was different; every dish was a full portion.
The Mi family wasn’t so eager; they hadn’t lacked meat since Mi Xia arrived.
The meal was a great success.
Mo Haoyue sent Zhong Xinfu and Zhong Ye out. “Brother Zhong, take care.”
“You go back quickly. My nephew will take me there.”
Mo Haoyue waited until they were far away before returning. There were still some things to pack up. The family slowly tidied up, and it would be done in an afternoon at most.
In the evening, they had a simple meal and then took turns showering. There were two bathrooms, upstairs and downstairs. Mi Xia and Mo Zhixia’s room was downstairs, the nephews chose the upstairs rooms, and Mi Qiu and Zhang Hongxia were also upstairs.
Mi Xia was exhausted after a day’s work, but Mi Qiu’s family was still energetic, perhaps because they were excited about the new house, or perhaps because Mi Qiu was going to work tomorrow.
Mi Xia didn’t know what time they fell asleep.
The next day, she got up early to cook porridge, make white flour pancakes, stir-fry green vegetables and eggs, and boil more than a dozen eggs.
After breakfast was ready, Mi Qiu got up, ate breakfast in a hurry, and rode her bicycle to work.
As soon as Mi Qiu left, Mo Haoyue and his father came over. Zhang Hongxia and her children also woke up, and Mi Xia served them their food.
“Sister-in-law, please help me take care of Xia Xia. Haoyue and I will go out for a while. Don’t go out to buy vegetables; we’ll buy them,” Mi Xia instructed.
“Okay, I’ll take care of Xia Xia. You two go quickly,” Zhang Hongxia teased Mi Xia.
Mi Xia knew her sister-in-law had misunderstood and thought they were going on a date, but she didn’t explain.
The two walked side by side, and Mi Xia took Mo Haoyue directly to Zhang Xiaoyu’s place.
Mi Xia: “Thinking about it, I’m quite lucky. I only went to the black market once, and I met Zhang Xiaoyu. It’s quite reassuring to cooperate with him.”
