Chapter 52: Liu Baoguo and Wang Fen Arrive in G County
After entering the house, Mo Haoyue asked, “Why are you here?”
Liu Baoguo replied, “We came here to see your parents. After all, they raised you, and we want to properly thank them.”
“Okay, let’s rest here for a day today. You must be tired after taking the train for several days,” Mo Haoyue said, looking at Wang Fen’s pale face.
Wang Fen, upon hearing Mo Haoyue’s words, was so moved she almost cried. “I’m fine. Wouldn’t it be too much trouble to stay here?”
Wang Fen was overjoyed. Staying here meant she could spend more time with her son. They hadn’t had much time to talk during their last meeting.
“No trouble at all. This small western-style house was bought by my wife. We’ve been living here for the past two years. The woman you met earlier is my wife’s sister-in-law. Before I disappeared, my mother kept my allowance, and Mi Xia didn’t see a penny.”
“During the year and more that I was missing, my mother bullied my wife, so my wife went back to her parents’ home. My older brother and sister-in-law didn’t dislike her and treated my wife and daughter sincerely.”
“After my wife earned some money, she bought this small western-style house and moved in with my older brother’s family. At that time, the family didn’t know I was still alive.”
Although they could find this place, they might not know who bought the house.
Mo Haoyue didn’t explain how Mi Xia earned the money, and Liu Baoguo and Wang Fen cleverly didn’t ask.
Considering how Zhang Xiaoyu got in, Liu Baoguo and Wang Fen pretty much understood how Mi Xia bought this small western-style house.
Mo Haoyue recounted Mi Xia and his mother’s story in one breath, and Liu Baoguo understood his intentions.
He didn’t even live at home, clearly showing his support for his wife.
Lunch was prepared by Zhang Hongxia, and it was quite sumptuous. Although Mo Haoyue ate quickly, his table manners were excellent.
After lunch,
Mo Haoyue said, “Sister-in-law, they’ll be staying here tonight.”
“Okay, brother-in-law, you keep them company for a while. I’ll go tidy up a room.”
In less than a quarter of an hour, Zhang Hongxia had cleaned the room thoroughly.
“Why don’t you get some sleep? You’ve been on the train for several days and must be tired.”
Mo Haoyue wasn’t sure what to call them. Calling them “Mom and Dad” felt inappropriate since he wasn’t familiar with them yet. Calling them “uncle” and “aunt” also felt wrong, considering he knew they were his biological parents. He decided not to call them anything.
Liu Baoguo said, “Okay, you should rest too.”
Mo Haoyue went downstairs. Zhang Hongxia and Mi Qiu were still downstairs.
“Brother-in-law, who were those two?” Mi Qiu curiously asked.
“There’s something I was planning to tell Mi Xia and you, but they found us first.”
Mo Haoyue explained the whole situation to Mi Qiu and Zhang Hongxia. They were also surprised. Those two looked extraordinary and had come all the way from the capital.
Zhang Hongxia said, “Then spend more time with them. My brother and I can handle the stall.”
Mo Haoyue didn’t refuse. He had to take them to Mojia Village tomorrow and try to return to the capital as soon as possible to be with his wife and daughter.
In the room, Liu Baoguo asked, “What do you think of Mi Xia?”
Wang Fen replied, “She’s quite impressive. A woman who got into university through her own efforts, moved her brother’s family into this house, is loyal and intelligent.”
“However, she’s a bit different from what we heard. In Mojia, she was constantly bullied by Xu Cuihua and didn’t resist. If Xu Cuihua hadn’t wanted to sell Mo Zhixia, she probably would still be there.”
Wang Fen felt a pang of sadness; Mo Zhixia was her granddaughter.
Liu Baoguo said, “A mother’s love is fierce. If she had continued to endure even after her daughter was to be sold, I’d doubt if Mo Zhixia was even her biological daughter.”
Wang Fen nodded in agreement. She actually admired Mi Xia quite a bit.
The next morning, after breakfast, Mi Qiu and Zhang Hongxia went to work, and the children went to school.
Only Liu Baoguo, Wang Fen, and Mo Haoyue remained at home.
“I’ll go back to the village to pick up the old couple. In half an hour, you two should head to the state-run restaurant, treat them to a meal, and buy some things for them at the supply and marketing cooperative as a thank you.”
Wang Fen smiled, “We’ll do whatever you say.”
“Then I’ll go ahead.” Mo Haoyue said, and rode his bicycle away.
When Mo Haoyue arrived home, the Mo family was all in the fields earning work points. Yesterday, Xu Cuihua had angered Mo Haoyue, and the old man Mo didn’t know if he would come back.
So he went to the fields early in the morning. Although Mo Haoyue gave them enough money each month to eat, they insisted on working, and he couldn’t do anything about it.
“Fourth Uncle, you’re back! After you left yesterday, Grandpa was furious,” Mo Jianguo ran back when he saw Mo Haoyue walking home.
“Where’s Dad? Is he in the field?”
“Yes, do you need to see Dad? I’ll call him back if you need something.”
“Go ahead,” Mo Haoyue patted Mo Jianguo’s head.
His second brother was there when he left, so he wanted to call his second brother back and ask him what happened after he left.
Unexpectedly, Xu Cuihua and the old man Mo came first. “Son, are you here to take us to see them?”
Mo Haoyue nodded. “Mother, they’re at the state-run restaurant in the county. I’m back to take you to dinner and introduce you to them.”
Xu Cuihua was overjoyed, wondering if they had money. If they did, she would definitely ask for a large sum—for raising their son for so many years.
The old man Mo also had a plan. “Your mother and I will change our clothes and leave.”
Then he took Xu Cuihua into the house to change into new clothes.
“Fourth brother, you’re looking for me?” Mo Lao Er asked as soon as he entered.
“Yes, second brother. What happened at home after I left that day? I heard that Mother was beaten by Dad?”
“Dad slapped Mother after seeing you leave because of her anger,” Mo Lao Er said, lowering his head, seemingly lost in thought.
Suddenly, he raised his head again. “Fourth brother, come with me.”
In his room, Mo Lao Er lowered his voice. “Fourth brother, can you do me a favor?”
After saying this, the honest and filial man couldn’t help but cry.
“Second brother, don’t cry. Tell me what’s wrong. If I can help, I will,” Mo Haoyue didn’t know how to wipe his brother’s tears.
“Fourth brother, don’t laugh at me. I’m useless, letting my wife suffer. Since Fourth sister-in-law left, my wife has been doing all the housework.”
“Every day, after she finishes her work in the fields, she has to boil water and cook. All the other daughters-in-law, the eldest sister-in-law and the third sister-in-law, don’t have to do anything when they get off work.”
“Because of this, your second sister-in-law’s body is worn out. She can’t sleep at night, it hurts so much. Every night, I pretend to be asleep. I’m ashamed to face my second sister-in-law.”
“I’m a man, and I can’t stand up for her. Watching her work so hard every day, I… I…” Mo Lao Er cried uncontrollably.
Mo Haoyue knew how tiring it was. In the past, even with Mi Xia and his second sister-in-law’s help, it was exhausting. His second sister-in-law must be even more tired.
