Chapter 64: The Storm in Mojia Village Breaks Out Again
“Dad, the head of the household is playing cards at the village entrance,” whispered Mo San’s wife.
Old Man Mo trembled with anger. What good were these two sons? He turned and slapped Xu Cuihua.
“Look at the two good sons you’ve raised! Not one of them is home when it matters!”
“What good are they? They’re all good-for-nothings!”
Xu Cuihua felt wronged. What did her sons going out have to do with her? Their legs weren’t attached to her body.
“Eldest daughter-in-law, call the village chief. Third daughter-in-law, go to the village entrance and bring back the third son,” Old Man Mo instructed.
“Father, I’ll go right away,” said the eldest and third daughters-in-law, running out the door.
Meanwhile, Mo San, clutching something he’d pilfered from home, said to Mo Baobao, “Come on, let’s continue. I’m going to win all your money today!”
Mo Baobao deliberately said, “Bring it on! If I were afraid of you, I’d be your grandson!”
They’d only played for a short while when they heard someone shout, “Don’t move! Everyone put your hands on your heads and squat down!”
Mo San didn’t even look, angrily cursing, “Which brat dares to mess with your Third Uncle? Ignore him, let’s continue!”
As soon as Mo Lao San finished speaking, he saw Mo Baobao and everyone else squatting with their heads down. He realized something was wrong and turned around.
Ten or so police officers stood behind him. His legs trembled, and he sat down heavily on the ground.
“Get down! Don’t move!”
This shout made Mo San quickly get up and squat.
“Confiscate the gambling money. Everyone line up, and we’ll take you all away for detention,” Li Tailing ordered.
“Yes, Chief!”
Mo San’s wife arrived to see the police surrounding the card players. Terrified, she covered her mouth and ran home.
“Father, Mother, something bad happened! Something bad happened!” she cried as she ran.
Instantly, everyone in the Mo family courtyard focused on the third daughter-in-law.
“Dad … Mom… save the head of the household! A large group of… police… are taking the third son away!” she cried as she ran.
“What’s going on? Tell me slowly!” The village chief, having heard the word “police,” quickened his pace towards the courtyard.
“Village… chief, please save… the head of the household! Many police came to the village entrance and are taking away everyone playing cards… Waaaa, what will I and the children do if something happens to the head of the household?” The third daughter-in-law cried.
“You stupid woman, shut your mouth! Even if the third son was fine, you’d cry him into trouble!” Xu Cuihua slapped the third daughter-in-law.
Mo San’s wife dared not speak back, only silently weeping.
“I’ll go see what’s going on,” the village chief said, leaving the courtyard, followed by everyone else, heading towards the village entrance.
Upon reaching the village entrance, Li Tailing asked the leader, “You’re the village chief, right? I’m Li Tailing, Chief of the G County Public Security Bureau. They were gambling, and the money has been confiscated. I’m taking them in for detention.”
A murmur arose. The village chief’s heart tightened, and he chuckled, “They were just small-time gamblers. It’s not that serious, is it?”
Li Tailing glared at the village chief, causing him to take a step back.
But he was the village chief, and Li was taking away his villagers. He was desperate and afraid, but he couldn’t ignore his people.
He could only ask, “They usually only bet a few cents, it’s not that serious, is it?”
“They confessed to betting hundreds. It seems your village is quite wealthy?” Li Tailing calmly asked.
“No, no,” the village chief frantically waved his hands, thinking: Which little bastard dared to harm me? If I catch him, he’ll kneel in the ancestral hall for ten days and a half!
“Chief,” someone whispered in Li Tailing’s ear.
The village chief breathed a sigh of relief. Good thing this young man arrived.
But before he could fully exhale, he heard Li Tailing call, “Village chief, I received information that there’s also illicit sexual activity in your village? Even though it’s the era of reform and opening up, you can’t just do whatever you want. If this were before…”
The village chief choked, his face reddening. “Who?!”
“Let’s go, I’ll show you,” Li Tailing said, glancing at the young man.
The village chief followed Li’s gaze, thinking: This isn’t a savior, it’s adding fuel to the fire! My heart aches!
The path Li was taking them on looked like it led to Widow Zhang’s house, at the end of the village.
Her husband was a hunter. Years ago, he went into the deep mountains and never returned. Her mother-in-law died of grief two months later.
Only Widow Zhang remained, and she rarely interacted with the villagers. The village chief wondered why Li was taking them there.
As they walked, they reached Widow Zhang’s door. Before anyone noticed, indiscreet sounds came from inside.
The village chief’s heart ached. What a day!
Li gently pushed open the fence and went in. The village chief had no choice but to follow, along with the others. From inside…
Before Li could act, the village chief kicked the door open. A flurry of activity and frantic searching for clothes ensued.
“Where’s my pants? Find them quickly!” a man yelled.
“Where’s my underwear? You tore it up and threw it where?”
These words sparked wild imaginations. Some women blushed.
“Is Widow Zhang that desperate? She seems pretty proper, how could she be so… wanton?” said Passerby A.
“Exactly! She pretended to be a chaste woman.”
“I thought she was virtuous, but secretly she’s so…”
“Exactly, the old saying is true: you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
“Enough! Shut up! What’s all the commotion?” The village chief was furious. These ignorant women! Couldn’t they see the Chief was there? Didn’t they care about losing face?
The women feared the village chief, needing him for work, so they fell silent.
Some men were also fantasizing.
Passerby A thought: Widow Zhang is so desperate, maybe I have a chance.
Passerby B: Widow Zhang has a great figure, and she hasn’t had children. If only… hehe.
