Chapter 106: Red-Lotus Serpent King VS Lightning Leopard

In a shadowy canyon inside Beast Forest, a pale blue mist drifted everywhere, and the air carried a faint stench of decay.

The bluish fog seemed to be slightly poisonous as well, and an ordinary person who inhaled it would become dizzy and numb in all four limbs.

Within this low-visibility gorge, a seven-member team of young people searched cautiously, stretching their senses to the limit as they crept toward the depths.

Along the way they encountered quite a few Beasts, and whenever possible they avoided fighting; if avoidance proved impossible, they struck hard and ended the battle quickly.

After three more days of travel, Ashura and the others leaned against a huge boulder, resting and eating a little food.

Three fruitless days had dragged morale to rock bottom, and Gais’s face showed open irritation, yet every time he saw Ashura’s smile he could no longer bring himself to complain.

Christine could not sit still; she lifted her long legs and sat down beside Ashura, and Ashura pretended to glance casually down at those legs, clicking his tongue in silent praise.

Apparently unaware of his look, Christine hesitated slightly and said, “It’s been 3 days and we’ve gained nothing; are you sure the Red-Lotus Serpent King is here?”

Always gentle with beauties, Ashura replied, “I don’t want to drag you around aimlessly either; these 3 days I’ve eaten badly and slept worse.”

He paused, then added, “If news of an injured level-6 Beast is posted in an adventurer tavern, people will come to search no matter whether it’s true.”

“Now that the tip came from me and I’m standing with you, please keep calm… unless someone has a better target to hunt?”

After hearing this, Christine and the others could only nod helplessly; in truth they both hoped and feared running into the Red-Lotus Serpent King.

Until now they had never imagined entering Beast Forest with the intent of killing a level-6 Beast.

Sometimes they wondered whether they had gone mad.

While everyone was lost in thought, a piercing roar suddenly sounded in the distance, so loud that it seemed to thin the canyon mist.

Startled, they sprang up and grabbed their weapons; although the roar came from far away, it chilled them to the bone… was this the might of a level-6 Beast?

Ashura listened carefully for a moment, then said gravely, “That isn’t the Red-Lotus Serpent King, but it’s a Beast no weaker than it; it sounds like it’s fighting, so… ”

He broke off and swept his eyes over the gasping group; one Red-Lotus Serpent King was frightening enough, and now another powerful Beast was here, making them all itch to run.

Fire-element Magician Gais trembled uncontrollably and stammered, “Ashura, just take that magic scroll as a gift… let me leave, please?”

Ashura answered irritably, “If you want to go, go; it’s not as if I forced you in here! Anyone else want out?”

Jella parted her lips, but in the end said nothing, merely casting Ashura a sultry glance.

Luna seemed not to hear at all and kept stealing glances at Ashura.

Clay and Christine appeared to disagree; Ashura overheard that Clay wanted Christine to withdraw first.

The two were twins from the same mother; Clay feared the danger ahead and wanted to go alone, whereas Christine flatly refused to let her brother take the risk by himself.

As the argument heated up, Ashura snapped, “What’s with the life-and-death farewell? We never said we’re going to fight that Beast; we’ll just get closer for a look, and if there’s no chance we pull out… we’re here to pick up scraps, not to die.”

The siblings blushed slightly, and Christine shot Ashura a petulant glare but fell silent.

Ashura then said to Gais, “Fine, leave if you like; we’ll go have a look… see you around.”

He started toward the source of the roar, but Gais glanced back at the unknown blue fog behind them and swallowed nervously.

As a mage he could never make it out alone; his sense of direction was poor, panic clouded his mind, and returning alone would be suicide.

Thinking of that, he dashed forward, clutched Clay’s arm, and sobbed, “Don’t leave me… I’ll go with you, all right?”

Clay felt goosebumps rise, flung off Gais’s hands, yet still maintained the poise of a noble, unwilling to use Ashura’s rough methods.

Ashura said coldly, “If you don’t want to die, shut up! Everyone, remain alert and keep quiet; Luna and Rock guard Jella and Gais 300 meters behind us, and at the first sign of trouble the whole team retreats… understood?”

They all drew their weapons in acknowledgment, and Ashura unsheathed his Twin Swords, moving with Christine and Clay to scout toward the roar.

The closer they got, the clearer the roars became, and they could now tell two Beasts were screaming.

Ashura recognized one of them as the Red-Lotus Serpent King that had knocked him off a cliff; after brief thought he sped forward, face alight with excitement.

Clay grabbed his arm, staring at the black-haired youth as though he had gone insane.

Ashura turned back and whispered to the siblings, “We’re about to strike it rich… hear those twin roars? One is the Red-Lotus Serpent King, and the other sounds like an equally strong level-6 Beast; the two brutes are probably fighting, and that’s our chance.”

The knightly brother and sister looked at each other, unable to fathom why anyone would be thrilled at the prospect of facing two level-6 Beasts.

Was the guy truly fearless, or was something wrong with his head?

While they hesitated, Ashura had already surged ahead, opening a gap; the siblings exchanged helpless looks, Clay hurried after him, and Christine rushed back to inform the rear group of what she had learned.

Even Jella wanted to run after hearing the news, but Rock gave them a contemptuous glance and strode forward, while Luna said nothing, gripping her bow as she followed.

Christine simply spread her hands at the two remaining Magicians and prepared to advance as well.

Jella and Gais had no choice but to keep up; without warriors to protect them, the two mages would never get out of the canyon… like thieves trapped on their own ship.

As the roars grew closer, Clay’s heart almost leaped from his chest; gripping his knight’s greatsword, he watched Ashura crawl behind a huge rock, peer ahead, and suddenly stiffen.

Clay crawled up beside him and copied the motion, and the next instant he also froze.

Not far away, a one-eyed serpentine Beast was locked in a savage close-quarters struggle with a leopard-type Beast 7 or 8 meters long; the fight shook the earth and was brutally intense.

Swallowing hard, Clay turned to the bright-eyed Ashura and asked in a trembling voice, “Is that the Red-Lotus Serpent King you’re looking for?”
