Chapter 109: Full Firepower
The team’s first powerful volley, highlighted by the tremendously explosive arrow Luna launched, erupted.
The Red-Lotus Serpent King let out one furious roar after another as the red miasma around it burst outward, kicking up dust.
Ashura and the Clay siblings leapt to the edge of a clearing and stared at the increasingly dense crimson fog before them, unable to see a thing, then Ashura turned and asked the two, “How is it?”
The siblings knew Ashura was asking about the results, and Christine replied solemnly, “I struck the left side of its body, but the spear merely sank into the tip and dealt little damage; that beast’s defense is astonishing!”
Clay nodded as well, indicating that his own results were about the same as his sister’s.
At this point they could only hope that the explosive tier-5 beast core would inflict serious damage on the Red-Lotus Serpent King, for the battle was proving even tougher than they had expected.
Just as the three kept their eyes fixed on the thick crimson poison mist ahead, Ashura suddenly shouted, “Watch out!” and before the words had faded a trunk-thick tail whipped toward them like a steel lash.
Ashura instinctively rolled aside into a depression, yet the Clay siblings raised their knight shields and braced for the sweeping blow.
The result was that both were hurled against the cliff wall, the massive impact making them cough blood, and Clay’s knight shield cracked in several places, which showed just how great the force had been.
Ashura shook his head helplessly, thinking that although the pair were not weak, they lacked combat experience, and against a savage beast they could not fight head-on like a knightly charge.
He saw the two coughing blood on the ground, the archer in the distance firing blindly into the red fog, and Jella, who was greatly drained from continuously controlling the vines.
Ashura suddenly felt weary and decided he would have to turn the tide himself, or the others might all die here.
With that thought he willed it so, and the Kaban Prison on his wrist gave a soft clank as it released the second seal.
Ashura’s aura instantly rose to 2nd-stage Grand Martial Master; he sprang back to Jella’s side and shouted, “Give me the Fire Dragon Spell scroll, and keep the vines binding the Red-Lotus Serpent King as much as you can!”
Jella did not understand why a warrior like Ashura wanted a magic scroll.
Only a mage could activate a magic scroll with mental power, yet she still handed the Fire Dragon Spell scroll to Ashura at once and said pitifully, “If you plan to run, you must take me with you!”
Ashura nearly stumbled when he heard that, then turned and glared fiercely at the charming female magician.
He immediately looked at the archer Luna and said, “Forget about conserving beast cores and keep firing at the spot you hit before!”
Luna nodded vigorously, for after her first arrow she had switched to arrows tipped with tier-4 beast cores.
This time she drew another tier-5 beast-core arrow and, relying on her innate keen senses, loosed it into the crimson poison mist; an explosion rang out at the same moment as the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s howl.
The blast further enraged the Red-Lotus Serpent King; its huge head thrust out of the red fog, the remaining triangular eye filled with ferocity, and the ragged wound on its neck still bled, yet it ignored the others and locked its gaze on Ashura in the arena.
It had recognized that the black-haired youth before it was the human who had blinded one of its eyes and forced it to heal for so long.
The blindness of its left eye filled it with hatred for this human, and it was determined to tear him apart and swallow him alive.
Ashura also saw the murderous intent in the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s gaze and drew his neck back nervously, knowing he would have to fight for his life and was ready to unlock the third seal at any time.
Before man and serpent could act, a dazzling golden beam stabbed straight at the wound on the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s neck… Christine had activated her family battle art and charged with fearless knightly resolve.
A trace of admiration flashed in Ashura’s eyes; he respected the fighting spirit of this alluring beauty, who was at least far stronger than her half-kneeling brother.
Yet after only a few exchanges, Christine was swatted by the swinging serpent head and sent flying to land at Ashura’s feet.
The blond knight looked utterly battered, even the silver breastplate at her chest was shattered in one spot, and from Ashura’s angle a glaring expanse of whiteness came into view.
Ashura forced his gaze away from the white sight and back to the Red-Lotus Serpent King; by then Clay finally drew his two-handed sword and charged, working with Luna’s arrows to barely hold the serpent at bay.
It was clear that the siblings’ knightly techniques favored wide-open power moves and lacked evasive agility, leaving them at a disadvantage against the far stronger Red-Lotus Serpent King.
Luna also held back for fear the beast-core explosions would wound her allies, and her shooting became hesitant.
Meanwhile Jella’s pretty face had gone pale from magical exhaustion.
Ashura knew that if they delayed any longer the team’s morale would crumble; feeling the power that surged through him after unlocking two seals, he raised the Twin Swords to charge desperately forward when a tired voice beside him called, “Careful!”
Ashura tilted his head to look at the golden-haired knight on the ground, the half-reclining girl displaying her fine figure without reserve.
Ashura let his gaze wander again and again until two rosy patches climbed onto the girl’s heroic face, then he turned back toward the front, swallowed, and said, “Relax, I won’t die! Just lie there and watch me slay the snake!”
With that he activated the Chasing Wind, Pursuing Thunder footwork technique and charged at the Red-Lotus Serpent King; seeing Ashura rush in, the serpent flicked its long tail and forced Clay back.
Ignoring the arrows Luna loosed, it opened its bloody maw and lunged at Ashura.
Ashura evaded the snapping bite with agile footwork, then unleashed the Tower Ascension Sword Art and hacked at the serpent’s body.
As the blade fell, a bolt of lightning struck the point of impact, scales flew, and the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s entire body visibly convulsed, for the lightning not only inflicted damage but also caused paralysis.
This was the power of Ashura, a dual mage-warrior, and it was the first time he had applied his cultivation results in real combat.
In the academy team he had been unwilling to reveal this fact, but within this small party of varied backgrounds he no longer cared.
Relying on the agility of Chasing Wind, Pursuing Thunder footwork to dodge attacks, he brought the Tower Ascension Sword Art down again and again, each slash carrying lightning into the serpent’s flesh.
New wounds visibly opened across the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s body, and dark red blood splattered everywhere each time it thrashed.
The other squad members were stunned; the momentum Ashura released was clearly no weaker than Clay’s or Christine’s, and they wondered what on earth those bolts of lightning were.
By the God of War, he is actually a mage?
And a mage who can cast without chanting spells?
And one who wields Twin Swords while doing it?
