Chapter 110: Slaying the Serpent
Everyone’s minds were confused and they could not believe what they were seeing.
Clay and his sister Christine were especially stunned; both were direct descendants of the powerful Kekkao family of the Xinde Northern Empire, a house famed for producing knights, and their patriarch Klike was a formidable Holy Knight of Light.
They were also outstanding students of Anas Academy and had been randomly assigned to this section of the Beast Forest near Saint Gobban City to complete a family training quest.
Born into privilege, the siblings naturally had broad horizons and were proud of their own strength.
They had met many strong peers of their age, especially the countless academy elites who courted Christine.
There were indeed young warriors stronger than Ashura, yet they had never seen anyone who blended footwork, martial techniques, and magic so flawlessly in real combat, and compared with Ashura their previous attacks now looked like brute charges by enraged bulls.
Both of them blushed, for they had never underestimated Ashura during their earlier talks, which was why they had agreed to let him lead the team.
They had charged first because they thought they were the strongest in the party and should meet the Red-Lotus Serpent King head-on, yet only now did they realize that the true powerhouse was this black-haired boy who seldom acted.
Jella and Luna let their bright eyes wander even more; on the King’s Continent strength was always worshiped, and Ashura was now undoubtedly an outstanding young powerhouse.
Jella in particular had grown up near the Beast Forest by Saint Gobban City and had seen far too many peers grow smug after venturing into the forest a few times.
Some even boasted after killing a lone tier-5 beast and never wondered whether they would dare draw their weapons before a tier-6 beast.
Ashura at this moment perfectly explained what it meant to be strong: strength was not only raw power but also the courage and fighting spirit shown in the face of a mighty enemy.
Jella seemed to breathe a little harder, her sultry eyes lingering on Ashura as he darted about the battlefield; for the first time, the girl who was always surrounded by pursuers felt the urge to pursue a man herself.
Rock, meanwhile, stared at the fight with an idiotic grin of worship; with his limited experience he had never seen combat at such a high level and felt honored that his young master was so powerful.
By now Ashura had unleashed his 16th slash, the accumulated power of the Tower Ascension Sword Art had grown immense, and each stroke combined with a burst of lightning to tear the Red-Lotus Serpent King’s flesh to the bone.
The Red-Lotus Serpent King, possessed of great intelligence, realized that the human’s blade aura was growing fiercer; the lotus-shaped tumor on its forehead flashed red, its speed surged, and its thick body whipped toward Ashura.
The sudden change forced Ashura to pull back his blade momentum and cross the Twin Swords before his chest, yet the sweeping force still knocked him into the air.
A coppery taste rose in Ashura’s throat and he swallowed the blood by force as a red beam shot toward him like an arrow; ahead of the light he could see the serpent’s gaping maw and razor fangs.
Everyone cried out, “Watch out!”
Ashura merely narrowed his eyes, thrust the glowing Twin Swords forward, and drew forth a blinding golden radiance from the blades.
The Red-Lotus Serpent King had suffered from this trick before, so it instantly shut its remaining right eye and tilted its head, yet its charge did not slow.
This time Ashura did not stab at the eyes again; instead he flung out a magic scroll and a fire dragon as large as the serpent king roared forth, colliding head-on with the snapping snake head.
As sparks flew, the serpent king let out an ear-splitting scream and searing waves of heat surged in every direction.
The monster’s head turned pitch-black, smoke poured from its mouth, and its huge body toppled backward uncontrollably in mid-air.
The squad gaped in shock; Ashura’s on-the-spot reactions and choice of moves left them awestruck by their simplicity, efficiency, and devastating power.
What they did not know was that these were lessons Ashura had learned through repeated training in the Beast Forest and life-and-death matches in the Pagoda Palace, for such trials always made one grow quickly.
White from the adventurers’ tavern was proud because he had taken part in several Pagoda Palace death matches, yet the silver Pagoda Palace badge still rested quietly in Ashura’s storage space.
Before the others could recover, a lightning-fast figure burst from the fiery cloud in the sky, charging at the falling Red-Lotus Serpent King with the same resolve it had shown when it lunged earlier.
Ashura’s whole body was streaked with charred wounds, for the shockwave from the collision of the fire dragon had injured him as well.
He had been far too close, yet his gaze still burned as he fixed on the serpent king.
Ashura gripped the Twin Swords tightly and, when less than 3 meters from the serpent king, shouted, “Z-Slash!”
With blinding speed the Twin Swords executed the yellow-tier martial technique and slashed at the neck wound the Lightning Leopard had torn earlier.
Three golden arcs flashed, the sound ceased, the blades fell, and the serpent split in two.
The gigantic head separated cleanly at the neck, and the two halves of its body crashed onto the canyon floor.
Everyone’s mouth hung open as they stared blankly at the utterly dead Red-Lotus Serpent King.
They could not believe it was real: in merely a few dozen exchanges a tier-6 beast, the Red-Lotus Serpent King, had been slain.
Although the serpent had been badly wounded in its fight with the Lightning Leopard, for someone at the Grand Martial Master level to kill a tier-6 beast so quickly was unheard of.
Ashura landed and panted slightly, looked at the charred snake head before him, and finally vented the frustration he had bottled up.
He casually stabbed a blade into the head, twisted, and flicked up a blood-stained red beast core the size of a little finger.
He then turned toward the other squad members with delight; when he saw them staring at him as though he were a monster, he struck what he believed was a very dashing pose.
Smiling, he said, “Come over here and take a look at our spoils!”
This time the others hurried over to the serpent’s body, still finding the scene a little unbelievable.
Although they had not personally slain the Red-Lotus Serpent King, they had taken part in the encirclement and that was a feat they could boast about for a long time.
Jella felt a slight shiver as she looked at the dead serpent king, and whether by instinct or design her body edged closer to Ashura, even thrusting her ample chest forward on purpose.
Luna, standing to the side, pouted in displeasure, yet she did not have the nerve to lean against her destined hero the way Jella did.
Grandpa War Tree had not deceived me; a young powerhouse like this truly is my best match, Luna thought, and her eyes glittered like stars.
