Chapter 13: Academy Rules
Ashura arrived at War God Plaza after asking for directions while running.
A large crowd of freshmen had already gathered here.
Everyone looked unfamiliar as they observed their peers, and some boys from the same dorm formed small groups and whispered among themselves.
From time to time crude comments about which girl had the largest chest or the longest legs, accompanied by lecherous chuckles, drifted over.
It was Ashura’s first time away from home and being in a group, so he was curious about everything around him.
He also scanned the other students, and suddenly his eyes met a pair of cool, aloof ones.
When Ashura looked carefully, he saw that it was Clara, the silver-haired girl who had taken the test with him that day.
Happy to see someone he knew, Ashura waved enthusiastically at the girl.
Yet the girl merely snorted in a haughty way and turned her head elsewhere.
Ashura’s raised hand froze awkwardly, and he rubbed his nose helplessly before turning to look at other students.
Just then, as a bell tolled, two instructors flew over the plaza, one a Warrior and the other a Magician.
The two instructors hovered in mid-air above the plaza and silently observed the freshmen below.
The sight delivered an overwhelming visual shock to the newcomers.
They screamed and shouted while looking up at the instructors, for everyone sincerely admired the strong.
Ashura was equally excited; he did not know what rank allowed a person to fly, but he was certain that the Black Water clan had no such experts.
If he could one day fly back to the Olei Kingdom, what glory and prestige that would be…
Just as Ashura immersed himself in this fantasy, one of the experts in mid-air spoke; the voice was not loud, yet it seemed to ring beside every freshman’s ear, “Silence!”
The plaza fell silent at once.
A burly middle-aged instructor stepped forward and said, “Greetings, youngsters. I am Philman, dean of the Saint Gobban Academy Warrior School, and the man beside me is Sanin, dean of the Magic School.”
After he spoke, the refined middle-aged Magician beside him removed his hat and bowed in greeting.
“On behalf of Saint Gobban Academy, I welcome all of you and hope you achieve great progress during your time here!”
“Next, I would like to explain the academy rules and your future study schedule.”
All the freshmen raised their heads and listened attentively to President Philman’s speech.
President Philman said sternly, “First, regardless of where you come from or what family or power stands behind you, once you enter the academy you rely only on yourself.”
“Your family influence holds no sway here, so do not try to use it, or you will be expelled!”
At these words, some richly dressed students’ expressions changed, though a few still looked unconcerned.
Without pausing, Philman continued, “All cultivation resources here must be earned by yourselves; gold, silver, and even jewels have no value, and only academy points can be exchanged for resources.”
“You obtain points through your ranking at the academy and by completing academy missions, and you may also use them in private trades.”
At this, all the students began to talk; those from modest backgrounds felt greatly encouraged, while the wealthy ones grumbled.
This policy invisibly narrowed the gap among the students.
Dean Philman went on, “The academy imposes few restrictions; you are free to plan your own time.”
“Attend whichever instructor’s class you like, or even skip classes to cultivate on your own… the academy will not interfere.”
“However, the academy gives each student at most 9 years; within those 9 years, as long as you reach Grand Martial Master Stage 3 or Great Magician Stage 3, you may apply for graduation.”
“The academy will then issue a diploma, but if you fail to meet the requirement within 9 years, you will not receive one, and your descendants will not be admitted by any academy!”
The students gasped, yet since anyone who passed the entrance test was already a prodigy of the continent, they all felt confident they would graduate.
Seeing the freshmen’s reactions, the two deans nodded with satisfaction; they had heard that several promising seedlings were among this cohort and wondered whether they could be nurtured to bring honor to the academy.
The only thing they competed over with other deans was how outstanding their own students were.
Philman continued, “The other academy rules will be sent to your badges as messages, so I will not repeat them one by one.
“However, many areas inside the academy forbid private fighting, and violators will be punished severely!”
The freshmen below all nodded in agreement; though each was a pride of their homeland and naturally hot-blooded, this rule would spare the academy much trouble.
Philman looked over the students once more, and seeing no objections he said, “Since the rules are finished, Dean Sanin will explain your upcoming arrangements.”
Dean Sanin stepped forward with a smile and said, “New students, you have all been assigned dormitories, and tomorrow we will place you into classes according to your situations.”
“A badge message will tell you which class to report to, and after registration you will receive your uniforms; within the academy no clothing other than the uniform is allowed.”
Dean Sanin’s voice was cultured and gentle, pleasing to the ear, yet his next words made the freshmen shiver.
“After the class division, a homeroom instructor will oversee your cultivation progress; although the academy is open and free, there will be a small assessment in 3 months.”
“Most of you are currently at Warrior Stage 3 or Mage Adept Stage 3, and within 3 months everyone must break through to the Martial Master or Magician realm, except for non-combat majors.”
“Your homeroom instructor will lead your class to take the test, which requires you to use Martial Techniques or Magic to inflict lethal damage on a testing dummy.”
“Students who fail to meet the required level or whose damage is insufficient will be eliminated from the academy; do you all understand?”
As Dean Sanin finished speaking, heated discussions erupted among the students below.
They had thought that passing the entrance test would let them rest easy, yet unexpected hurdles still awaited them.
Dean Sanin looked at the noisy plaza and felt quite satisfied with the effect.
He continued to address the students, “Do not be surprised; the academy will hold many comprehensive assessments and missions in the future, and anyone who fails them will be knocked out!”
“You will get used to it; our historical graduation rate is around 50%, and we also have an accidental death rate of nearly 30%, so do your best!”
After these words, the plaza instead grew quiet; a graduation rate of roughly 50%… why had no one heard of this before?
It made sense: students who failed to graduate would hardly boast about it.
But what was that nearly 30% accidental death rate, and how could attending school be so dangerous?
While everyone was still confused, Dean Sanin said solemnly, “Cultivation is like rowing against the current; if you do not fight for it, you will remain a speck of dust on this vast continent.”
“But if you succeed in your studies and surpass others to become a mighty figure, you will be the brightest star in the night sky!”
“Therefore, students, your future lies in your own hands!”
“What kind of people you will become depends on what you do during your time at this academy. Good luck… dismissed!”
With that, the two deans turned and flew away, yet their words lingered in the minds of the young students for a long time.
