Chapter 15: The Mage Apprentice of Class 13
When Ashura heard the girl greet him with a teasing tone, his face darkened at once, he turned his head aside, and swore to himself that he would never pay attention to that silly woman again.
Clara found his sulky expression even more amusing.
Ever since she grew up, every boy she knew outside her family had been courteous and elegant.
They paraded around her like peacocks displaying their feathers, whereas this clumsy-looking black-haired boy felt refreshingly different.
Curiosity about the boy overcame her, so she inexplicably took the seat beside him.
Their voices were low, and nobody else caught what they said.
All they saw was the silver-haired girl cover her mouth and giggle at the boy, apparently ridiculing the black-haired lad’s outfit just like they had.
At that moment several boys quietly switched to seats farther back, intent only on getting closer to the goddess of their dreams.
The other girls in class could only purse their lips helplessly, for none of them dared compete with the silver-haired girl’s looks.
While everyone’s attention was fixed on the rear of the classroom, a pleasant bell rang.
At the same time a young female instructor whose beauty matched Clara’s walked into the room.
The instructor’s features were alluring, yet her bearing remained noble and graceful.
The purple magic robe accentuated her spectacular figure, lending her a mature allure that surpassed Clara’s youthful charm.
After taking her place at the center of the dais, the instructor greeted them warmly, “Hello, freshmen of Magic Class 13, I am your homeroom instructor, Ella!”
“From now on I will lead Magic Class 13; if you have any questions about magic training, come to me, and I hope we will get along well in the days ahead, thank you!”
Her confident opening speech snapped the dazed students back to their senses yet again.
The boys were beside themselves: a single, modest class actually had two goddess-level beauties; attending Saint Goban really paid off!
Ella had just graduated as one of the academy’s outstanding students, her grandfather Aiwei was a renowned magic professor, and his strength had reached the terrifying Grand Archmage realm.
Raised by her grandfather while her parents served as senior officials of the empire, Ella chose to remain at the academy as an instructor after graduation.
She herself had achieved 2nd-Stage Magic Scholar strength, more than enough to act as homeroom instructor for a freshman class.
When Ella stayed on, many outstanding male classmates who fancied her also remained to teach and continue their pursuit, yet so far none had won her favor.
Ella felt a bit nervous about being a homeroom instructor for the first time, but the academy helped by assigning her the smallest class, Magic Class 13.
All of them were lightning-element magicians, only 14 students… 7 boys and 7 girls… showing how rare lightning magicians were.
Otherwise the school would never have made an exception to admit freshman lightning mages.
After all, once lightning magicians matured, they dealt the highest damage among magicians of the same rank.
Ella had been pleased with receiving an excellent, easy-to-manage class with few students, but the roster she received quickly dampened her mood.
On the positive side, 4 of the 14 students had already reached the Magician rank, a higher proportion than any other class.
The downside was that the roster clearly listed one Mage Apprentice in her class!
She could not believe it, so she rushed to the office of her admissions-officer friend and demanded to know whether the data had been entered wrong.
The young instructor who had handled admissions recounted the incident, leaving Ella both amused and exasperated.
Kind-hearted as she was, she did not worry that the weak student would lower her class average; she feared he would be expelled at the 3-month assessment.
Thus she firmly memorized the underachiever’s name… Ashura!
She secretly resolved to give that lagging student extra guidance and care, hoping to raise his results so he would not be eliminated; otherwise she would be left with only 13 students…
Seeing the excitement on the freshmen’s faces made Ella blush slightly.
She suddenly noticed that many front-row seats, usually coveted, were vacant, as the students had collectively shifted to the back.
When her puzzled gaze found the silver-haired girl at the rear, all doubt vanished.
She smiled and said, “I will now call roll… stand when your name is read!”
Ella read the students’ names one by one, looking at each who stood so she could put faces to them.
When she called Clara, the boys erupted in cheers.
She merely smiled and, upon reaching the last name on the roster, announced gravely, “Ashura!”
At the same moment a tall, well-proportioned black-haired boy rose and answered, “Present!”
Ella stared at the youth, wondering, So this is Ashura?
How should I help him raise his rank? Would being too obvious hurt his self-esteem?…
Ideas whirled in Ella’s mind while the class had no idea what she was thinking.
All they saw was the beautiful homeroom instructor staring blankly at the odd black-haired kid.
So he really is a lightning-element magician from our class; why is the instructor looking at him like that?
Could she have fallen for him? He’s not that much better-looking than me…
Whispers spread through the room, and even Clara frowned slightly.
Ashura was even more confused about what he had done wrong.
Could my handsome face have startled the instructor? That can’t be it…
After all, he was a thin-skinned teenager and could not endure the beautiful instructor’s ardent gaze.
He called out, “Instructor, may I sit down now?”
The call snapped Ella out of her reverie.
Realizing her lapse, her exquisite face flushed again and she answered hurriedly, “Yes, yes, you may.”
The odd exchange made eyes dart between the two, and several girls could almost smell fresh gossip.
Ella composed herself and said, “Starting today our formal lessons begin; each instructor’s courses are posted on the bulletin board outside the main hall!”
“This room is our homeroom, but classes will not always be held here; you may freely choose the courses and instructors you prefer!”
“Our first goal is to pass the assessment in 3 months, so work twice as hard and I will do everything I can to assist you!”
After speaking she cast a deep glance at Ashura.
“Next we will choose class officers; with so few students, we only need a class leader and a study monitor.”
“The two officers must cooperate sincerely in serving the class; anyone who wishes to run may stand and make a brief statement!”
After hearing this, the students looked at one another but stayed silent, probably afraid the position would hinder their own cultivation.
Instructor Ella smiled at the scene and added, “I forgot to mention that class officers receive extra Academy Points!”
The words had barely left her mouth when the students scrambled to sign up; the headmaster had explained the importance of Academy Points yesterday, and everyone wanted as many as possible.
Yet when one voice sounded, the room fell silent for a moment before bursting into enthusiastic applause.
That voice was Clara’s, applying for class leader, and no one objected or even thought of competing… her looks crushed all resistance.
Instructor Ella gladly announced, “Then Clara will be our class leader; who would like to be study monitor?”
No sooner had she spoken than several boys leapt at the chance, but Ashura, watching from the side, noticed Clara shoot him a glare that seemed to say, You should run for monitor!
Ashura immediately chickened out, turning his gaze to the window and avoiding her eyes.
Seriously, having a Stage-1 Mage Apprentice serve as study monitor would make the whole class a laughingstock…
In the end the thin boy who had offered Clara a seat earlier was elected monitor.
The skinny boy, Kyle, was also a Stage-1 lightning magician and came from a powerful family.
Teaming up with Clara as a class officer thrilled him; his eyes burned as he kept stealing glances at her in the back row.
Clara, however, sat expressionless, having already struck a certain someone with thunder in her heart countless times…
Finally Instructor Ella distributed the uniform magic robes to every student.
Once she required everyone to wear the robes from now on, the courses at Saint Gobban Academy officially began….
