Chapter 35: Dual-element Magician

The next morning, Ashura hummed a tune as he walked toward Magic School.

Anyone could see he was in a good mood; he probably thought those 1 000 credits were already in his pocket.

His plan was to attend homeroom instructor Ella’s lecture first, then spar with Magina at the training field.

After all, skipping the homeroom instructor’s class was never wise.

Yet the moment he stepped through Magic School’s gate, he saw the short instructor Yuan Da waiting for him.

Yuan Da’s eyes were bloodshot, yet his energy was strangely high; Ashura’s heart jumped… had the instructor already solved his problem?

Ashura followed Yuan Da to the classroom where they had met last time, and not a single soul was inside.

After closing the door, Yuan Da got straight to the point and said, “I believe I have found the reason you can meditate without pause!”

Ashura had guessed an answer was coming, but he never expected Yuan Da to deliver it so quickly.

Perhaps this plain-looking middle-aged uncle really could guide him.

Without letting him ask, Yuan Da pulled out an object, handed it to Ashura, and said, “Infuse it with Magic, and don’t stop until I tell you to.”

Ashura recognized it at once; it was the very magic-testing stone used during freshman orientation.

Unsure what Yuan Da was up to, he nevertheless accepted the magic-testing stone and poured in mana until the stone lit up.

The stone shone with a silvery white light, indicating Ashura’s lightning-element Magician Stage 1 strength.

Yet Yuan Da leaned in and stared hard at the magic-testing stone.

He let out a relieved laugh and said, “Just as I thought! Ashura, look closely… what is different about the stone?”

Still confused, Ashura examined the stone in his hand but noticed nothing odd about the silvery glow.

Just as he meant to ask, he suddenly spotted a faint gray radiance beneath the silver light of the magic-testing stone.

The lightning element’s brilliance was so dazzling that the gray layer had been easy to miss.

Ashura stared blankly at that gray glow, still unsure what it meant.

Yuan Da exclaimed excitedly, “You noticed the gray light too, right? Ashura, it means one thing… you are a dual-element Magician!”

“Gray stands for spatial Magic; you are a lightning element and spatial element dual-element Magician!”

Ashura froze; he had never known he was dual-element, and while the academy had its share of such Magicians… he knew at least a dozen freshmen… a lightning-spatial combination probably existed in no one but him.

Before Ashura could reply, Yuan Da went on, “Your ability to absorb Magic endlessly comes from being a spatial Magician!”

“The spatial element you draw in during meditation turns your body into a storage space, allowing you to hold far more Magic energy!”

“Most spatial Magicians are single-element and cannot continuously draw in other elements the way you do!”

“That means you possess an exceptional gift in Magic cultivation; although you started late, persistent meditation will let your Magic vastly outshine your martial progress!”

The more Yuan Da spoke, the more excited he became, almost happier than Ashura himself.

Ashura, however, felt more shock than joy, for he knew Yuan Da was probably right.

When he carefully examined his own Magic core, he indeed found inconspicuous gray spatial elements; their dull color had made him overlook them before.

After a long silence, Ashura looked up, his gaze burning as he met the smiling Yuan Da.

Ashura bowed slightly and said, “Thank you, Instructor Yuan Da, for clearing my doubts; I will keep my promise, but I have two requests!”

“First, please keep my dual-element Magic a secret; I do not want to draw excessive attention at the academy.”

“Second, would you guide me on how to train? I wish to cultivate both martial arts and Magic without letting the two gaps grow too wide… I want balanced growth. Can you tell me how?”

Yuan Da looked at the boy who had not lost himself in pride despite being the academy’s only lightning-spatial dual-element Magician.

He greatly admired the youth’s mature composure, and the respectful request stirred him deeply.

His voice even trembled as he replied, “Before meeting you, I was less than 50 % confident in training a dual mage-warrior; after seeing the skill you used in the test, my confidence rose to 60 %.”

“Now that I know you are lightning and spatial dual-element, I am 70 % confident!”

“I do not know how high I can take you, but as long as we trust each other and work together, the sky is your only limit… you will be the brightest star in the vast cosmos!”

Seeing a instructor even more excited than himself, Ashura felt his own heart surge.

He performed a formal disciple’s bow and said, “Instructor, please instruct me!”

Yuan Da hurried to raise the outstanding youth, for perhaps the entire academy held only this one student who believed in him.

He understood the weight of his responsibility; he could not betray that trust, and he had to prove that three decades of research were not in vain.

Yuan Da was not eloquent, yet Ashura saw the answer he sought in the man’s eyes.

The two agreed to meet in this classroom every afternoon so that Yuan Da could explore with him how a dual-element Magician might excel as a dual mage-warrior and fully unleash his talent.

Yuan Da said he would search for more materials and draft a comprehensive training plan for Ashura.

Although he had not slept since the day before yesterday, he felt immensely energized, as if 20 years younger.

Ashura’s emotions also ran high; after sneaking back into class, he simply sat there, lost in thought.

Clara, who had meant to lend him her notes, fumed again, unable to guess what that rascal was daydreaming about now.

In truth, Ashura was pondering how to train spatial Magic; the whole academy probably had only three or four spatial Magicians… a pitiful number.

It was said that spatial spells were extremely rare and expensive; surely the element served more purpose than merely storing extra Magic energy.

Ashura alternated between frowning and grinning, leaving Clara utterly baffled; she guessed he now carried a secret he would not share and felt he was growing harder to read by the day.

From the podium, homeroom instructor Ella also noticed the dark-haired boy’s odd behavior; she considered making him answer a question but feared he might fail and grow embarrassed enough to skip her class next time.

She had heard of his antics at the training field, where the only student in a magic robe practiced Martial Techniques, an eye-catching sight in that vast arena.

That had made the female instructors of Magic School tease her behind her back for quite some time…

Lost in his thoughts, Ashura waited until class ended, then bolted for the door before Clara could speak, making her grind her teeth.

Before Clara recovered, Ashura dashed back, braced his hands on her desk, and gazed tenderly at the silver-haired girl.

As a rosy blush climbed her cheeks, Ashura whispered, “Beautiful, lend me 20 credits.”

Clara: ……..
