Chapter 59: Morning Training Wager

In the early morning, Lan Yu, dressed in a crisp Warrior uniform, was jogging along the flagstone path beside the lake in Saint Gobban Academy’s lakeside park to warm up.

Despite her exceptional talent, she was still one of the hardest-working students in the academy.

Every dawn before classes she came here to run and loosen up her body.

While she ran and wondered why a certain obnoxious fellow had yet to return, she noticed footsteps behind her keeping an unhurried pace in sync with her own.

She could even feel that person’s gaze glued to her hips.

Infuriated, she stopped to let the person overtake her, yet the moment she halted, the footsteps stopped as well.

The follower even clicked his tongue as though he had not had enough of watching her swaying backside.

Unable to bear it, Lan Yu flicked her waist-length blue hair and turned, ready to scold the insolent fellow.

Before she could speak, a face that had lately intruded on her dreams appeared, leaning casually against a roadside tree with a roguish grin.

Lan Yu felt her heartbeat double and tried to keep her habitual cool expression, but the upward curve of her lips refused to flatten, and no words emerged though her mouth opened several times.

The boy’s first remark almost made Lan Yu kick him to death as he taunted, “Haven’t seen you for a few days and your butt got bigger; been stuffing your face and gaining weight?”

The girl’s face immediately darkened as she snarled, “Glad you rushed back so soon; I haven’t had a sparring partner in ages, and beating others is never as handy as beating you!”

Ashura’s mouth twitched; he really wanted to release every seal on Caban’s Prison and have a good fight with this chick to show her his strength… after all, he was the guy who had taken down an Earthquake Berserk Bear.

Yet he touched the bracelet and gave up, unwilling to undo his final seal lightly.

Perhaps one day lifting that last seal would raise his level on the spot.

After a bit of self-comfort, Ashura forced himself to stay calm and said, “My cultivation time is precious now, I don’t have time to play with you; I’m here only to return your dagger.”

Speaking, he pulled the azure-bladed dagger from the boot on his right foot and held it out to Lan Yu.

Seeing that he had taken her dagger from his boot, Lan Yu instantly fumed, pinched the tip between two fingers, and took it.

She muttered, “You actually kept my dagger in your boot… how am I supposed to use it now, it stinks!”

Ashura was unconcerned and challenged, “Then don’t take it back; it’s served me pretty well these days.”

Lan Yu wrinkled her pretty nose with a snort and said, “In your dreams!” yet once she held it she felt the dagger reeked of blood far more than before.

Once Lan Yu reclaimed the dagger, Ashura considered the matter settled and turned to leave.

The moment he turned, the girl flashed like the wind to block his path.

Ashura snapped, “What is it? Good dogs don’t stand in the way!”

Without arguing, Lan Yu clasped her hands behind her back, circled him with a smile, and scoffed, “I thought you went out to toughen up, but it seems you haven’t made much progress.”

Ashura tossed his head confidently and said, “Do you know how strong I am now? I’d scare you to death if I told you; move aside, I’ve no time to be your sparring partner.”

Lan Yu protested, “You dare! Now that you’re back you’re still my sparring partner; if you try to run I’ll pound you! I’m already at Grand Martial Master stage 1!”

She expected Ashura to be shocked or even frightened when she revealed her Grand Martial Master stage 1 strength, yet the boy merely curled his lip.

He said with faint disdain, “So what if you’re Grand Martial Master stage 1? I’m not impressed.”

Those words upset Lan Yu; fewer than 10 freshmen had reached Grand Martial Master stage 1, and he actually looked down on her and refused to spar.

How could she stand that; she reached for the dagger she had just retrieved, intent on settling the score.

Ashura quickly said, “The academy forbids private fights; I’m not going to the arena, and if you lay a finger on me I’ll report you.”

Lan Yu sneered at the brat’s cowardice; she had waited so long for his return and would not let him off easily.

Tilting her head, she suddenly thought of a good idea and her mood brightened.

She giggled and said to Ashura, “Since you won’t duel me here, let’s make a bet on something else.”

“Didn’t you say you’ve grown stronger lately? Then let’s race for speed.”

“Starting from this tree you’re leaning on, we run one lap around the lake path; if you can touch me at any point, you win, and if you can’t, you lose.”

“If you lose, you keep being my sparring partner, and no backing out.”

Ashura curled his lip, but after thinking he rolled his eyes and smiled, “What if I catch you during your lap and I win… then what?”

Seeing his wicked smile, Lan Yu instinctively stepped back a few paces; her greatest advantage was her speed.

Among peers she was certain no one could match her full speed, which was why she dared bet with Ashura.

After considering it, Lan Yu saw no chance of failure and replied forcefully, “If I lose you can do whatever you want!”

Grinning, Ashura leered at her curvy figure and said, “Anything at all, huh? Then if I grab you, give me a kiss.”

Lan Yu gnashed her teeth and said, “You scoundrel, dream on… you think you can beat me and get fresh with me?”

Ashura impatiently dug at his ear and said, “Are we betting or not? If not, I’m off to prepare for Magic class.”

Lan Yu immediately thought he was posturing, trying to make her back out first.

She said arrogantly, “Why wouldn’t I bet! It’s a deal; if you can’t catch me and still won’t be my sparring partner, you’ll see how I deal with you!”

With that, the girl took two steps back, turned, and shot off along the lakeside path like a gust of wind.

Ashura flashed his trademark grin, lifted one seal to restore 70% of his power, and chased after the blue-haired girl.

By now several Warriors were already out for morning training on the path, and they stared in surprise at the two racing figures.

Lan Yu glanced back at Ashura, who was doggedly closing in, and felt a tinge of surprise.

She had not expected the rascal to be so much stronger, especially fast enough to keep up with her current speed.

But she had yet to go all out, so with a proud snort she unleashed her family’s movement technique at full force, her speed exploding as she shot forward like a streak of blue light.

As her pace quickened, the footsteps behind her grew more distant and ever fainter.
