Chapter 61: A Hasty Escape
But when Ashura left the woods and headed toward the cafeteria, a swarm of hostile male students suddenly brushed past him, brandishing weapons.
More and more of those boys kept appearing, and although Ashura had no idea why, he did not stop any of them to ask; just as he was about to head for the training field, he heard two boys running past behind him and talking, “Hurry up, don’t let that bastard get away; how dare he hit on my goddess, the great beauty Lan, I’ll twist his neck off.”
“I even heard it was Goddess Lan who forced a kiss on him; I don’t believe it for a second, once we catch that bastard I’ll torture him until he tells us what dirty tricks he used!”
A freckle-faced boy echoed, “Exactly, when exceptional guys like us can’t win Lan the beauty’s favor, what gives that black-haired punk the right?”
“Once we’re in the lakeside woods we have to find that black-haired kid; even if I have to drag him, I’ll haul him to the arena!”
Listening to the conversation behind him, Ashura neither looked back nor spoke; he silently pulled up the hood of his academy warrior uniform.
He then hid in the shadows of the roadside trees and sized up the warrior levels of those murderous students rushing into the woods.
When he noticed that even two upper-classmen at Grand Martial Master level had charged into the woods with weapons, Ashura did not hesitate… he turned around and walked straight out of the academy gate.
The boy was still trembling slightly, yet he told himself he was not afraid, he merely felt he needed to go out and temper himself a bit more.
Right now he could only hope there was another black-haired boy in that forest who would take the brunt for him; shameless as the thought was, he truly feared that pack of blood-thirsty simps.
He really could not understand it, because back when he was at the academy plenty of students had courted Lan Yu.
Yet none of them had ever been this insane, and now even senior students had joined the hunt.
What he did not know was that after Lan Yu advanced to the Grand Martial Master realm, her increased power only accentuated her beauty.
On King’s Continent everyone revered the strong, and when a person’s beauty even surpassed her strength, young male students became utterly obsessed.
Rumor cards circulated by the boys in Ashura’s dorm had further fanned the flames.
Yet the girl Lan Yu had never accepted any boy’s advances and even felt some aversion toward these annoying pursuers.
That changed only today, when two girls swore they had seen Lan Yu forcibly kiss an obscure black-haired boy in the woods, and the news swept through the male dorms like a storm.
Most self-important students at first refused to believe it, especially the claim that Lan Yu had initiated the kiss.
From what they knew of Lan Yu, no matter how outstanding a boy was, the goddess would never throw herself into his arms.
Yet because those two girls vowed on their martial futures and described the scene vividly, the pent-up resentment of countless boys finally exploded, and they came to the lake to look for the black-haired boy.
Ashura sighed at the gate, thought about where he could go, and decided to head for Puro City again in search of cultivation opportunities; if that failed, he would simply go to the Beast Forest.
So the boy led out his ordinary dragon horse, secretly glad he had seen Instructor Yuan Da the day before, otherwise he would not have been able to reach the Magic School today.
With that thought Ashura swung onto the saddle without further hesitation, cracked the reins, and galloped toward Puro City.
What Ashura did not know was that there really was a black-haired boy in the lakeside woods, and Lan Yu’s pursuers dragged him out; he happened to be a powerful student from the previous year.
That boy had a fiery temper as well; when a flock of freshmen surrounded him for no reason, hurling blame and abuse, he grew furious and followed the pursuers straight to the arena.
After defeating 7 or 8 freshmen in a row, he found himself outnumbered and called several friends to back him up.
Seeing him bring reinforcements, the freshmen likewise summoned their own allies, and these newcomers, clueless about the cause, still leaped onto the platform.
By the end even the academy’s top-year powerhouses were dragged into the fray, and the arena had not been this lively in ages.
That same day the female lead Lan Yu was cornered in the dormitory lounge by several girls who questioned her about the incident, and a friend guessed that the black-haired boy must be the magician who had sparred with Lan Yu before.
That was the boy Lan Yu had mentioned most often, but he had not been seen on the training field for quite some time.
Lan Yu curled up, hugged her knees, and sat silent in the chair with her lips pouting.
She still did not know why she had been so bold, yet apart from her racing heartbeat she did not feel the least bit of regret.
When her roommates said the so-called suitors had gone to the lake to block Ashura, she was worried at first, but then she thought, that guy is so sly he can even tease me, how could those fools possibly catch him?
At that thought the girl’s usually cool face blossomed into a smile, and the three girls around her exchanged glances, thinking, we’re done for… the goddess Lan Yu has fallen.
In another dormitory not far away, three girls chattered about the fresh gossip they had heard, while Magina stepped from the bath, toweling her damp hair.
The loose bathrobe could not hide her stunning figure, and whenever the three girls saw her like this they felt an unspoken inferiority.
They wondered how such a perfect woman could exist in their lives, perfect to the point that they felt no urge to compete.
As Magina dried her hair she listened to the trio discuss the sensational news, that Lan Yu from the neighboring class had forced a kiss on a boy in the lakeside grove.
Magina’s eyes lit up when she heard that, and she leaned in to find out what had really happened.
It was the first time the other three girls had ever seen Magina show such a gossip-loving look.
They launched into an even more vigorous discussion, speaking as though they had witnessed it themselves.
Yet when the protagonist was said to be a black-haired student, Magina’s hand paused mid-towel.
She asked calmly, “Do you know who that black-haired boy is?”
The three girls all shook their heads, though one of Magina’s roommates said that Lan Yu’s pursuers had caught a black-haired boy in the lakeside woods, apparently an upper-classman, and had taken him to the arena for a fight.
Magina gave a faint reply, returned to her room to change into her Warrior School uniform, and hurried toward the arena.
When she spotted the black-haired student in the arena from afar, she spun around and left, her eyes seeming to spit fire.
She was certain the male lead could not be that student; she had known Lan Yu since childhood, and the proud genius girl would never fancy the black-haired boy in the ring.
She had already guessed who the real black-haired boy was, and precisely because of that guess, a nameless jealousy flared within her.
That guy had returned and didn’t come to see her, had run to Lan Yu first, and had even stirred up a scandal with her.
At that moment Magina missed Ashura terribly, and she swore that when she saw him she would use every martial technique she knew on him.
Meanwhile the gossip about Lan Yu had reached the Magic School, and rumors about the campus belle were always popular conversation.
At that moment an exquisite silver-haired girl frowned slightly.
When she heard that the male lead was a black-haired boy, her heart skipped a beat and an uneasy feeling arose; she glanced at the empty seat beside her.
With a soft sigh she took out a notebook and opened it.
Looking at the two styles of handwriting in the notebook, she slowly broke into a sweet smile, while the male students around her, sitting upright and secretly watching her, began to fall under its spell.
They grew increasingly mesmerized by that enchanting smile…
