Chapter 74: The Magician Carrying Twin Swords
Ashura looked at the familiar notebook in front of him and recalled all the memories of passing notes back and forth with Clara.
He could not help smiling, but the moment he read the words on the page his smile froze.
In elegant handwriting that still carried a chill, it said, “You’re getting bolder… sneaking back to the Academy to force-kiss two girls from the Warrior School!”
Ashura slammed the notebook shut at once and looked around nervously; Clara, who had been watching him out of the corner of her eye, became even angrier at his guilty expression.
Ashura took the pen from the girl’s hand and scribbled back, “Don’t talk nonsense, I just got back to the Academy… what force-kissing, I have no idea what you’re talking about!”
Clara read the reply, bit her lip, and wrote, “If it wasn’t you, why did you cut off your black hair? The moment I heard the rumor I knew it had to be you!”
Ashura glanced at the notebook she handed back, curled his lips, and thought that a woman’s sixth sense really was sharp.
He hastily cooked up a random excuse to change the subject and chatted idly with Clara; seeing his rambling replies made her grind her teeth in frustration.
What truly angered her was that he had returned twice yet never once came to see her.
During the next 3 days Ashura kept a low profile, avoided hanging around the training field, and spent most of his time discussing cultivation insights with Instructor Yuan Da.
When Instructor Yuan Da learned that his beloved student had reached 2nd stage Grand Martial Master and 2nd stage Grand Magician, he was even more excited than Ashura had been at his own breakthrough.
Yet when Ashura produced the Pagoda Palace silver badge, Instructor Yuan Da fell into a long, wordless silence.
On the 4th day, the date of the Beast Forest assessment, the new students from the Magic School gathered at the main gate of Saint Gobban Academy.
Instructor Ella and another fire-element Instructor named Slade walked to the head of Magic Class 13’s formation.
Instructor Slade glanced at Class 13’s small group and joked, “You people are few in number; looks like this mission will be easy!”
Instructor Ella merely smiled and, addressing the 14 lightning-element magic students before her, said solemnly, “The task map for this Beast Forest assessment has been sent to your badges; Instructor Slade and I will lead you, and we will rendezvous with 2 Warrior classes.”
The students of Class 13 were all brimming with excitement; having Instructors along put them at ease, and it almost felt as if they were going on a field trip to Beast Forest.
Just then, 2 Warrior freshman squads, each escorted by 2 Instructors, moved toward Magic Class 13 from left and right.
Hearing the excited shouts of the chubby Na Wei up ahead, Ashura turned to look left and nearly lost his soul in fright.
Coming from the left was Warrior Class 7, and the long legs of the blue-haired girl in that group drew everyone’s eyes.
Ashura hurriedly turned his head to the other side, only for a flash of fiery red hair to make him wish he were dead.
He hastily pulled up the hood of his magic robe and tried to retreat to the back of the Magic class, but with so few classmates he still stood out even at the very end.
Clara had been watching Ashura all along; noticing his odd behavior, she glanced left and right as well, then viciously kicked him from behind.
Ashura, however, acted as if he felt nothing, keeping his head down and saying not a word.
Once the 3 classes merged, the most excited were the boys, for 3 of the Academy’s top-10 freshman beauties were now in a single team, along with the graceful and gorgeous Instructor Ella; this Beast Forest assessment was awesome!
The boys’ eyes roamed eagerly over every stunning figure, unable to take everything in.
Only Ashura, hood up, stood motionless, his heart filled with misery… was the god of fate trying to kill him?
He could sense 3 hostile gazes locked onto him: one on the left, one on the right, and one from ahead that kept shooting him icy sidelong looks.
Lan Yu and Magina had fixed on him long ago; even with the hood, their familiarity with him let them recognize him at a glance.
The two girls, their feelings tangled, drifted toward him during lineup until they stood on either side of Ashura without even realizing it.
They exchanged a look, both faces flushing faintly, and turned their heads away.
Ashura trailed the group like a zombie to the entrance of Beast Forest, fully aware that Clara was in front of him, Magina on his left, and Lan Yu on his right.
He was on the verge of mental collapse, terrified that the two young ladies would go berserk and expose this “black-haired pervert” to everyone, while the other boys looked at him with both jealousy and envy.
When the combined force reached the Forest gate, the handsome middle-aged Instructor Enge shouted, “You’re about to enter Beast Forest… stay absolutely alert, any carelessness could cost you your life!”
“Now draw your weapons… make sure your hands can unsheathe your blades or swing your staves at a moment’s notice! Understood?”
Upon hearing this, the students all pulled their weapons and staves from their storage spaces.
Instructor Enge was absolutely right; retrieving a weapon from storage took time, and such details could decide life or death.
Only Ashura stood there blankly; Instructor Ella, frowning at this troublesome student, walked over, tapped his shoulder, and asked, “What are you spacing out for? Why haven’t you produced your staff? Instructor Enge just reminded everyone!”
Ashura felt terribly embarrassed, for although he wore a magic robe he did not possess a magic staff at all.
After thinking for a moment, he drew Twin Swords Radiance from his storage belt and slung the sheathed pair across his back.
Everyone stared blankly at the bizarre sight, then burst into low chuckles… this was the first time they had seen a Magician carry twin swords.
Ashura paid no heed to the laughter and pointing fingers around him; he was still pondering how to handle the two walking time bombs beside him.
Instructor Ella felt a headache coming on at Ashura’s antics; this student really tried her patience.
She tapped his shoulder again and hissed, “Are you deliberately vexing me? Give your homeroom teacher a little respect… what mage uses twin swords?”
Unable to admit he lacked a magic staff, Ashura lowered his voice and replied casually, “With these twin swords I can protect you, Instructor Ella.”
As soon as the words left his mouth he felt they were inappropriate, but it was too late to take them back, so he could only give a couple of awkward laughs.
Hearing the teasing remark, Instructor Ella froze, then blushed slightly, spat lightly, and said, “Show-off! Suit yourself… go ahead and protect me with your twin swords.”
Ashura was a little baffled by the response, but the soft conversation had been heard by the 3 girls nearby, and he suddenly felt crushing pressure all around him.
He immediately bowed his head obediently and said no more.
Thus Ashura had Clara in front, Magina on the left, Lan Yu on the right, and Instructor Ella a short distance behind him.
Surrounded by 4 beautiful women, Ashura lowered his head and stepped into Beast Forest once more….
