Obstruction Part 2
Back home, Old Lady Lin asked Lin Chenghai to accompany her to the city. She didn’t plan to involve her precious younger son in this matter. Old Lady Lin was prepared for the consequences if they were discovered. Her youngest son knew nothing about it.
“Going to the city?” Lin Chenghai was surprised.
“Yes,” Old Lady Lin replied. “Your second brother is acting like a madman, and who knows if he will find that family and claim to be their biological son. Do they not know who their real son is? By doing this, he’s putting us on the spot and treating people like fools.”
“Mom…” Lin Chenghai opened his mouth, unsure what to say. “That person is already thirty years old.”
“That’s no excuse for your second brother to disrupt their lives,” Old Lady Lin said. “Their family is doing well. Your second brother going there to disturb them is too despicable. They still send us things every year. If your second brother makes a fuss, will they still send us anything?”
Lin Chenghai felt conflicted. Lin Chengshan was indeed not his biological brother, but Lin Chenghai dared not say that.
“Are you thinking Lin Chengshan is right, that it’s my…”
“No, no,” Lin Chenghai quickly said, seeing his mother’s displeased expression. “Mom, if you want to go to the city, let’s go. When do we leave?”
“The sooner, the better,” Old Lady Lin said. “Pack up. We’ll head to the county right away and catch the earliest train.”
Old Lady Lin was really afraid that Lin Chengshan would reach that family before them. Even though they had been very careful not to let Lin Chengshan know the exact street that family lived on, there was always the risk that Lin Chengshan could find out, especially if he had connections.
“I’m not taking you to the city to harm you,” Old Lady Lin said. “That family is very grateful. I’ll go and ask if they can arrange a job for you. If you get a job, you can stay in the city.”
Old Lady Lin had always had this in mind. Her eldest son already had a job arranged, and her youngest son’s job was also secure. In the past, it wasn’t possible to ask for too much due to the special circumstances and the fear of being accused of using influence for personal gain. But now, with the reforms, policies have changed. Old Lady Lin believed that if she pleaded with them now, it would work.
“I’ll pack up right away,” Lin Chenghai said.
Zhou Laidi, hearing Old Lady Lin’s plan and seeing her husband packing, sensed something strange about the whole situation. If Lin Chengshan truly wasn’t the biological son of that family, why would Old Lady Lin still go to Rongcheng City?
“Don’t Mom and Dad have their phone number? Can’t they just call?” Zhou Laidi asked.
“Some things can’t be discussed over the phone, which is why we need to go in person,” Lin Chenghai replied.
Some matters couldn’t be mentioned on the phone for fear of others finding out. They were going to the city not only to meet that family but more importantly to prevent Lin Chengshan from recognizing them.
Lin Chenghai knew that this trip to the city might lead to another confrontation with Lin Chengshan. He didn’t want to go, but he had no choice since his mother insisted.
“Didn’t Mom say she would try to get me a job?” Lin Chenghai thought. “If I can get a job in the city, who would want to stay in the countryside?”
“That’s true,” Zhou Laidi agreed, thinking it made sense. If Lin Chenghai got a job in the city, he would have to be there in person. “If you get a job, bring me and the child to the city later.”
“Of course,” Lin Chenghai said. “I wouldn’t leave you in the countryside.”
“Hurry up and pack,” Zhou Laidi urged. “I’ll help you. It’s hot now, but you’ll need to take some thick clothes if you get a job in the city.”
“We can bring the thick clothes later when I come to get you,” Lin Chenghai said.
“That works,” Zhou Laidi imagined their life in the city, thinking it would be wonderful if they all lived there together.
Lin Chengjiang and his wife overheard Old Lady Lin’s conversation. His wife wasn’t happy. “Only your brother gets the job?”
“Someone has to take the lead,” Lin Chengjiang said. He had always been in his brother’s shadow, not having to worry about many things. His parents always had his brother take the risks first.
“So, I don’t see a problem,” Lin Chengjiang continued. “If there are benefits, our parents won’t forget us. Remember, we gave them a grandson. My brother only has daughters. They can’t rely on granddaughters for their old age.”
Meanwhile, the Xiao family sent people to the station to keep an eye out. They believed Lin Chengshan would arrive within a day or two. While they expected him to seek them out, they also worried he might cause a scene, which could make the Dong family doubt their ability to handle the situation.
