The next moment, Old Master Yu patted Yuanyuan’s head, laughing heartily.
Yu Mingxi couldn’t help but stare—he had never seen his grandfather laugh like this. The more he watched, the stranger it seemed. Was this really the same grandfather he remembered?
“Brother, brother, let’s play together?” Yuanyuan’s eyes darted around, and even though her not-so-clever plan was in motion, Old Master Yu saw right through it.
“Oh, so you went bankrupt and now you want to start over? You’ve got it all planned out, haven’t you?” Even with a little kid, Old Master Yu didn’t hold back from pointing out the obvious.
For anyone else, it might’ve been embarrassing to be called out, but not for Yuanyuan. She even had her own reasoning ready: “If it’s just me and Grandpa playing, then Brother will be bored. It’s more fun when everyone plays together!”
Yu Mingxi had to stifle a laugh. He put his schoolbag away and joined the game.
By the time Yu Yingze came home from his after-school class, he could already hear laughter ringing through the house, including a voice that seemed unfamiliar.
Huh? A guest?
As soon as he stepped inside, Yu Yingze spotted a figure with his back to him. It wasn’t until his brother called him over and told him to greet “Grandpa” that he realized—it was the same stern, unsmiling grandfather from his memory.
Yu Yingze had seen their grandfather even less than Mingxi, and for some reason, he always felt like there was some distance between their dad and grandpa, as if they weren’t close and didn’t interact much.
Even though he wasn’t used to it, Yu Yingze joined the game. At first, he felt a bit awkward, but with Yuanyuan’s cheerful energy bridging the gap, soon enough, all three kids were laughing and playing along with Grandpa.
Aunt Chen, seeing how relaxed Old Master Yu was, could tell he had no intention of leaving anytime soon. So, when preparing dinner, she made sure to cook a few extra dishes.
“Grandpa went bankrupt!” Yu Yingze cheered excitedly after knocking out an opponent.
Just as Old Master Yu was about to step down, Yuanyuan slid a card over to him. From her stash of assets, she gave him half and said, “Yuanyuan is funding Grandpa.”
“What?!” Yu Yingze’s triumphant shout was cut short by her unexpected move.
Yuanyuan stood with her hands on her hips, and declared, “Of course it’s okay! It’s an investment!”
Aha, she had a whole philosophy for everything.
That evening, since Yu Jinxiao wasn’t coming home for dinner, after their meal, they all gathered on the sofa to watch TV.
Not long after, a shadow slipped into the brightly lit villa from the night outside.
“Daddy!” Yuanyuan was the first to jump off the sofa.
As usual, Yu Jinxiao scooped her up, but as his gaze flicked over to the figure sitting on the sofa—Old Master Yu—his expression turned noticeably colder.
“What are you doing here?” His voice was as icy as hailstones, and even the little girl in his arms shivered slightly.
“I came to discuss something with you.”
“Let’s talk in the study.”
Yu Jinxiao handed Yuanyuan over to Mingxi and led his father upstairs.
He seemed to know exactly what his father wanted to talk about. As soon as they entered the study, he shut the door and, in a tone laced with caution, said, “Keep your voice down.”
It was clear he didn’t want their conversation overheard.
“Why didn’t you consult me before deciding to adopt Yuanyuan?” Old Master Yu finally got to the point. He’d spent the entire day playing with her, and in all that enjoyment, he had almost forgotten why he came in the first place.
Yu Jinxiao was caught off guard by the question.
Consult him?
He adopted Yuanyuan on impulse. He hadn’t even discussed it with his own sons—how would he have had time to consult his father?
“Well, she’s already here now. What are you trying to say? Should I send her away?” Yu Jinxiao knew his father’s temper all too well, so his words came out combative from the start.
