Yuanyuan didn’t notice Yu Jinxiao’s skeptical look as she excitedly chirped, “Yesterday, Yuanyuan saw Second Brother reading a book, and there was a bicycle in it!”
“You’re saying we should get him a bicycle?” Yu Jinxiao asked.
“Mhm!” she nodded enthusiastically.
Yu Jinxiao thought this suggestion wasn’t too far-fetched; in fact, it was a pretty good idea. Other kids in their neighborhood had their own bikes, but Yu Jinxiao had never paid much attention to these things because Yu Yingze never asked for one. Whenever they went out, he just borrowed a friend’s bike to play.
In retrospect, Yu Jinxiao realized he had overlooked his son’s interests and needs.
“Alright, we’ll get the Transformer first, then check out the bikes.” He carried Yuanyuan into the store, where the staff greeted them eagerly.
There were so many different types of Transformers, and for someone like Yu Jinxiao, who had no interest in these things, choosing the right one was a headache.
“I’ll take them all,” Yu Jinxiao said, his approach to problems always being straightforward and a bit over the top.
Clinging to his neck, Yuanyuan bit her finger and said, “Daddy, do you not know which one Second Brother likes?”
Yu Jinxiao: “…”
She must be pretending to be clueless sometimes. When she teases me, her tone is sharper than an X-ray.
“Second Brother likes the blue one,” Yuanyuan said confidently, gesturing with her little hand. “It’s the new Transformer model. When we played together, he told me he didn’t have this one yet!”
“We’ll take that one, then,” Yu Jinxiao cleared his throat, trying to hide his brief embarrassment.
Though she often seemed a bit naive, today Yuanyuan was spot-on.
Buying multiple gifts may look like a grand gesture, but Yingze wasn’t someone who valued material things. He cared about thoughtfulness.
He’d surely guess that his father didn’t know his preferences, which is why there were so many options all bundled together. And even though it was Yuanyuan giving the gift, the responsibility would fall on Yu Jinxiao.
What looked like an impressive birthday gift might not bring the joy he had hoped for.
Once the staff finished wrapping the gift, Yu Jinxiao took the bag and headed off with Yuanyuan to buy a bike.
After searching on his phone, they headed straight to a high-end brand’s bike store. As soon as they stepped inside, the store staff immediately recognized Yu Jinxiao and became flustered, stammering, “Mr. Yu, h-how can we help you today?”
“I’m looking for a bicycle suitable for an eight-year-old.”
The salesperson quickly showed them several options, each expensive and stylish, all of which looked like something Yingze would love.
“Wrap up the most expensive one,” Yu Jinxiao said out of habit, equating the price with the quality of the gift.
But Yuanyuan, perched on his shoulder, leaned forward and pointed eagerly. “That one! That’s the bike Second Brother was looking at in his book last night!”
The salesperson hesitated for a moment before cautiously adding, “Mr. Yu, the bike she’s pointing at isn’t the most expensive model.”
Not the most expensive? That went against Yu Jinxiao’s usual criteria.
“Are you sure it’s this one?” Yu Jinxiao asked, lifting Yuanyuan so he could look into her eyes.
Yuanyuan nodded vigorously. “Yes! If Yuanyuan remembered wrong, Daddy… Daddy can hit me!”
“Tsk, who wants to hit you,” Yu Jinxiao gave her a glance, then turned to the salesperson. “Wrap it nicely and deliver it to this address before 5 p.m.”
After giving the address, Yu Jinxiao left the store with Yuanyuan. The salesperson stood there in a daze, feeling utterly confused.
Did I hear that right?!
Did that little girl just call Yu Jinxiao “Daddy”?
