Yu Mingxi’s smile froze in place, completely unprepared for such a strange question. He took a deep breath, carefully choosing his words before offering a new explanation: “The color isn’t important, what matters is the shape. It’s like how Yuanyuan wears different colors and styles of clothes every day, but you’re still Yuanyuan—you don’t become someone else, right?”
The little dumpling’s eyes lit up in sudden realization. “Oh, I get it now! Yuanyuan understands!!!”
With the odd understanding out of the way, Yuanyuan quickly learned to recognize numbers from 0 to 9.
This seemingly simple task nearly drained the life out of Yu Mingxi, who even had to retreat to his room for a moment to spray his inhaler. His breathing was noticeably heavier than it had been that morning.
Seeing this, Yu Yingze felt sorry for his brother and reluctantly took over the next lesson.
“Alright, now let’s learn colors.” Yu Yingze placed different colored blocks on the board. “I’ll only say them once, so you need to remember. If you don’t, I’ll take away one of your strawberry milk boxes.”
Yuanyuan, sitting obediently on her little stool, widened her eyes in horror. Her world seemed to collapse in an instant, and all motivation to live vanished.
While Yu Mingxi was the gentle and patient type of teacher, Yu Yingze was strict and fierce. For him, failure had consequences, and this immediately made the lazy little dumpling sit up straight, alert and focused.
After teaching each color once, Yu Yingze pointed back to the first block. “Alright, your turn to repeat.”
Yu Mingxi, standing nearby, couldn’t help feeling tense as well. Watching Yuanyuan’s big eyes tremble with fear, he felt pity for the little thing.
“This is Yuanyuan’s favorite—pink!” she proudly exclaimed.
“Hmm, correct. Good.” His praise was empty and lacked enthusiasm.
“And this is grass color!”
“What color is grass?”
“Uh…” Yuanyuan hesitated, thinking hard. “Green?”
“Hmm, correct. Next time, answer with more confidence.”
Sweating profusely, Yuanyuan felt like the person teaching her wasn’t her second brother but a mini version of her dad. She knew that if she didn’t focus or gave the wrong answers, she would be scolded—and worse—punished.
“And this color?”
“Blue! It’s the color of the sky!”
To everyone’s surprise, after only one lesson, Yuanyuan remembered all the colors in just 15 minutes.
Yu Mingxi stood in disbelief.
How was it possible that when he taught her, it took forever, but under Yu Yingze’s teaching, she learned so quickly? It was almost miraculous.
“Brother,” Yu Yingze said, sensing his older brother’s reluctance to be strict with Yuanyuan. “You’re too soft on her.”
Yu Mingxi: “…” He couldn’t believe he was being lectured by his younger brother.
By the end of the day, Yuanyuan had barely managed to learn how to recognize numbers up to 20, mastered colors, and even picked up a few letters and did some drawing.
Yu Yingze realized that Yuanyuan wasn’t really slow, she just had a peculiar way of thinking. And with her being so young, she was easily distracted by the most random things, making it hard for her to focus.
For example, while drawing, she was captivated by a butterfly fluttering past the window. She spent nearly ten minutes standing on tiptoes by the bed, staring at it.
In the afternoon, Yu Jinxiao returned home, and the first thing he did was summon Yuanyuan to test her on what she had learned.
The atmosphere in the house grew tense. Even the two young “teachers” stood straight, nervous about whether their little student had absorbed anything.
A small board was set up in the living room, covered with items representing everything Yuanyuan had learned that day.
Yu Jinxiao casually picked up a number and placed it on the board. “What number is this?”
Standing at attention, Yuanyuan was sweating, nervously shifting her feet as she swayed slightly, her hands clasped together.
Seeing her remain silent, Yu Jinxiao frowned and turned his gaze to the two brothers standing beside him, who were equally worried about the outcome.
