Gu Beiyan was so scared that cold sweat broke out, and both he and Chu Qi stood on either side, ready to catch the cat. Wen Zifei was so frightened he wanted to call for the teacher. But the next scene didn’t turn out as expected.
Yuanyuan furrowed her brows, feeling a bit sad. She gently removed some dried leaves and dirt from the large orange cat’s leg, revealing a small wound.
“You’re hurt. We need to put a panda band-aid on it,” the little one said clumsily but carefully, cleaning the dirt from around the wound. “Kitty, wait here. I’ll go get Teacher Su to get the panda band-aid.”
The large orange cat, whose paw was still poised to strike, froze in confusion.
This human child wasn’t trying to hurt it—she was helping?
Hearing that a kitty was injured, several kids quickly gathered around, curious about the fat cat. Everyone wanted to pet it, especially since the big orange cat seemed calm and let anyone touch its back.
But little did they know…
“Go ahead, touch me all you want. But you better bring me food afterward, or I’ll scratch all of you little brats,” the big orange cat thought, glaring.
Yuanyuan had gone to find Teacher Su and brought back some first-aid supplies. As she walked halfway, she saw a group of kids tugging hard on the big orange cat’s fur. Bits of fur flew everywhere, and Yuanyuan’s eyes quickly reddened with tears.
“Don’t bully the kitty,” she shouted as she ran toward them, blocking the big orange cat lying on the ground. “It’s hurt, don’t pull its fur—it hurts!”
The kids quickly hid their hands behind their backs and acted innocent when they saw Teacher Su approaching.
Yuanyuan’s small, chubby legs looked like lotus roots, and she crouched down beside the big orange cat. With gentle paws, she smoothed its ruffled fur. “Kitty, don’t be scared. I brought Teacher Su.”
The kindergarten had specific classes to teach kids about animals, and all animals were strictly screened and cleaned before being brought to a special care room. But this outdoor stray cat was visibly dirty, and no one knew whether it had eaten mice.
Teacher Su signaled the kids to step back and asked Yuanyuan to keep her hands off the cat to avoid catching any germs. It was the perfect time to give the children a real-life lesson in compassion.
“The kitty is injured, so don’t try to treat it yourself,” Teacher Su said, pulling out some hydrogen peroxide and putting on gloves. She gently lifted the big orange cat’s injured paw. “The kitty might be scared and could scratch you—”
Before she could finish, the big orange cat let out a fierce “meow” and bared its claws.
The hydrogen peroxide had touched the wound, making the cat jump from the sudden pain.
Yuanyuan quickly pressed it back down, softly stroking its head. “Don’t be scared, kitty. Teacher Su is helping you.”
“It hurts! I don’t believe you. You must be trying to hurt me!” The big orange cat struggled desperately to escape, but Teacher Su called over the security guard, who held the cat firmly in place.
“Teacher Su, the kitty says it hurts,” Yuanyuan said sadly, her little face scrunched up in concern.
While tending to the wound, Teacher Su smiled. “It’ll be over soon. We just need to clean the dirt from the wound, apply some medicine, wrap it up, and put on an Elizabethan collar, and we’ll be done.”
Yuanyuan didn’t say anything but turned to look at the frantic big orange cat.
“You bad people! All of you want to hurt me! I won’t forgive you!” the cat continued to protest in its own language.
Just then, the security guard pulled out a pack of sausages and curiously asked, “Does it eat this?”
The big orange cat, mid-rant, suddenly quieted down, its nose twitching as it sniffed the air. “I want to eat that.”
Yuanyuan looked up and translated, “It says it wants to eat.”
