Teacher Zhang, comforting the children, asked curiously, “Why?”
“In the TV shows, dads always seem strict when they scold you, but it’s because they want you to be good,” Zhouzhou said, sniffling as tears welled up again. “Uncle just scolded us fiercely earlier, but I know he wants us to be good kids.”
Yu Jinxiao: I didn’t, I wasn’t—don’t make stuff up.
Teacher Zhang, taken aback, glanced at Yu Jinxiao with admiration.
In Jiangcheng, Yu Jinxiao was infamous for being a fearsome figure. His reputation wasn’t just because of his status and power but also due to his ruthless and cold personality. Whether in business or dealing with competitors, his methods were known to be merciless.
Naturally, the mention of Yu Jinxiao was synonymous with fear.
But now, not only had he captured human traffickers, he was also kindly looking after and adopting Yuanyuan, patiently educating these mischievous kids…
Feeling deeply moved, Teacher Zhang stood up and grabbed Yu Jinxiao’s hand, shaking it vigorously. “Mr. Yu, you’re such a good man. I’m so touched—I might cry.”
Yu Jinxiao →_→: Please don’t.
“We’re sorry, Yuanyuan.” A few boys gathered around, wiping their eyes and crying as they apologized. “We shouldn’t have bullied you. We’re really sorry. From now on, we’ll be good kids and won’t disappoint Uncle Yu.”
Yu Jinxiao: ??? What does this have to do with me?
“That’s great! Yuanyuan forgives you all,” Yuanyuan said, extending her little hand, which supposedly brought good luck, to pat their heads one by one. “As long as you’re good kids, you’ll have good fortune!”
“Oh, I’ll give you the cookies I’ve been saving!”
“I’ll give you the apple I’ve been hiding.”
The boys dashed back to the dormitory and returned with little treasures in hand.
Yu Jinxiao took one look and couldn’t help but frown.
There were several cookies, but they looked like they had been stored for too long—the color was off, probably spoiled. The apple didn’t look much better—shriveled and wrinkled.
“Hey, are you trying to prank Yuanyuan again?” Yu Jinxiao gently pulled Yuanyuan aside, worried she might eat the spoiled food.
Zhouzhou’s nose twitched, and his eyes filled with tears again. “I’m not. I just wanted to give my favorite thing to Yuanyuan. I just wanted to apologize.”
“Mr. Yu, you’ve misunderstood Zhouzhou,” Teacher Zhang said softly, wrapping her arm around the boy’s shoulders. “He’s always loved those cookies, but the orphanage’s funds have been tight, and we rarely get them anymore. Whenever we do, Zhouzhou saves them to eat slowly, never wanting to finish them too soon.”
His teary eyes sparkled as he looked up at Yu Jinxiao, his gaze as pure and clear as crystal.
“Thank you, everyone, Yuanyuan will…” Yuanyuan, seizing the moment when her father wasn’t paying attention, tried to sneak a cookie.
She loved those cookies too.
Whenever the orphanage handed them out, she and Ding Miaomiao would rush to grab some, but with so many kids, they never got much.
“They’re spoiled. You really shouldn’t eat them,” Gao Zhou swiftly pulled her back, “You’ll get a stomachache.”
But the little one in his grasp continued to stretch toward the cookies, her tiny feet sliding in place but not moving an inch forward.
“Gao Zhou,” Yu Jinxiao suddenly pulled out a black card from his suit jacket and handed it over. “Go buy some proper snacks and bring them back.”
Gao Zhou had never seen this side of Mr. Yu before, he was deeply moved and it nearly brought him to tears. “Mr. Yu, I… I feel like crying too…”
