Chapter 61
Thick, heavy curtains blocked out all the scenery. Lin Si sat unusually upright, staring silently at his knees with a vacant expression. Even when the nanny van braked, he only swayed slightly with the inertia, his expression unchanged.
“Don’t look so lost,” Liao Ji grasped his hand, but even he couldn’t find the right words to comfort Lin Si.
They had both imagined that when this day arrived, it would be a moment of triumphant joy.
Yet, unexpectedly, no one felt particularly happy.
Liao Ji sighed and joined Lin Si in staring blankly into space.
The car pulled into the parking lot of Xiaoshan Hospital. Lin Si put on sunglasses and a mask before stepping into the elevator.
He didn’t know where Lu Wei was, nor did he fully understand why he had come. But somehow, in this moment, it felt like he should be here.
Maybe to see Lu Wei. Maybe to see Lu Shaoming. Either way, he was here now.
When the elevator reached the VIP ward floor, Lin Si hesitated for a few seconds before stepping out.
The usually quiet floor was filled with noise and commotion. Lin Si was momentarily confused. He turned to Liao Ji and hesitantly asked, “Did we go to the wrong place?”
Logically, Lu Shaoming’s death should have been kept under wraps, so there shouldn’t be a crowd outside the ward.
Taking a few steps forward, Lin Si stopped a nurse and asked in a low voice, “Where’s Mr. Lu?”
“No idea…” The nurse gestured vaguely. “Probably somewhere in that crowd.”
Before Liao Ji could stop her, the nurse hurried downstairs.
“What’s going on?” Liao Ji held Lin Si back. “Stay here. I’ll go check first.”
“It’s fine. I’ll go with you. It’s not strange for me to be here to see Lu Shaoming,” Lin Si said.
As they made their way toward the crowd, Lin Si suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure—or rather, a familiar head of bright yellow hair.
But in an instant, the figure disappeared.
Lin Si quickly called Lu Nan. When the call connected, he asked, “Where are you?”
“I’m out handling something,” Lu Nan replied.
Through the headset, Lin Si could hear the noisy background.
He asked directly, “Are you at Xiaoshan Hospital?”
“Hm?” Lu Nan seemed to be walking as he spoke. “How did you know?”
Then, Lin Si spotted him again. “Turn around. I’m at the corner by the elevator.”
As he spoke, Lu Nan turned his head, paused for a couple of seconds, then waved at Lin Si before making his way through the crowd.
“What are you doing here?” Lu Nan grabbed Lin Si’s arm.
Lin Si was equally confused. “I was about to ask you the same thing.”
Lu Nan let out a long sigh and muttered, “I came to see off my old man.”
Lin Si: “???”
Lu Nan: “…I’m Lu Shaoming’s son.”
Lin Si: “???”
Clicking his tongue, Lu Nan pulled Lin Si to a quieter spot and asked in a low voice, “Why is Lu Wei letting you just stand around here? Didn’t he call you?”
“He doesn’t know I came,” Lin Si replied. “I didn’t tell him.”
Lu Nan led him forward. “He’s busy right now, nowhere to be seen. Let’s find a lounge—you can wait for him there.”
“You know about me and Lu Wei—”
“Figured it out that day when we played games together,” Lu Nan interrupted. “I can recognize Lu Wei’s voice.”
Lin Si made a small noise of acknowledgment. As they walked through the crowd, he noticed several people staring at Lu Nan.
He whispered, “Why are they all looking at you?”
Lu Nan let out a disdainful chuckle. “They’re not looking at me. They’re watching me. And when Lu Wei shows up, even more people will be staring at him.” He opened an office door and gestured for Lin Si to sit. “Because all those people out there are illegitimate children—except for Lu Wei.”
“Of course, I’m an illegitimate child too,” he added casually.
Lin Si’s mouth fell open in shock. He turned to glance at the hallway and stammered, “T-That many?”
“Not that many. Maybe half. Seven or eight.” Lu Nan poured him a glass of water and shrugged. “Some of the younger ones might look like my scumbag father’s kids, but they’re actually just children of Omegas he slept with. Now, they’re all fighting for a piece of the inheritance.”
Lu Nan smirked and shook his head. “It’s like the emperor’s harem after his death—except, well, my father doesn’t really deserve to be compared to an emperor.”
Lin Si was still processing everything, absentmindedly scratching the back of his hand. “Does Lu Wei know?”
“Who doesn’t know? I knew I was a bastard since elementary school. Lu Wei had it even worse—he lost his mother when he was seven or eight. He’s long since gotten used to this kind of thing.” Lu Nan leaned back and sighed. “My dad—well, my Omega father, actually—told me that even when Lu Wei’s mom was still alive, Lu Shaoming had already kept several mistresses. Maybe he pissed her off to death.”
Lu Nan spoke with a casual, indifferent tone, but to Lin Si, the words weighed a thousand pounds.
Everyone always said Lu Wei was a golden child, the perfect winner in life—backed by the Yu family, favored by Lu Shaoming. No one seemed more enviable than him.
And Lu Wei had always acted like that was true. He never showed any weakness or pain in front of others. He never talked about himself. He lived a smooth, effortless life, as if he had never faced hardship, as if he was invincible.
Just smoothing out the rough and difficult traces of life with the palm of one’s own hand—how painful must that be?
Lin Si clutched his phone and scrolled to Lu Wei’s number.
“Give him a call,” Lu Nan said as he walked toward the door. “My dad’s still outside—I’m going to check on him.”
Before leaving, he added to Liao Ji, “You two stay here. Otherwise, it’ll be a hassle to find you later.”
Lin Si had already memorized Lu Wei’s number. He held his phone tightly but couldn’t bring himself to press the call button right away.
What was he supposed to say?
Anyone who knew what happened back then would never believe that Lin Si’s concern was genuine. Even Lin Si himself feared that he wouldn’t be able to simply give Lu Wei a hug without ulterior motives.
So instead of calling, he sent a text: 【Where are you?】
“Just call him,” Liao Ji urged. “You came all the way here because you wanted to see him, didn’t you?”
Lin Si took a deep breath and pressed the dial button. The call rang for a long time before it was finally answered.
“It’s me.” Lin Si spoke first.
Lu Wei’s voice was hoarse, as if he hadn’t had water in a long time—or maybe he was just too exhausted to put any effort into speaking.
“Mm.”
“Where are you? I’m at the hospital.” Lin Si asked.
There was a slight pause on Lu Wei’s end before he said, “In Director Li’s office.”
Lin Si immediately got up. “I’ll come find you.”
“Seventh floor.” Lu Wei’s voice was a little quieter, as if he was confirming something with someone else before coming back to the call. “Where are you? I’ll come get you.”
“No need. It’s just an elevator ride—I won’t get lost.” Lin Si replied. “You take care of your business. I’ll be there in five minutes.”
After hanging up, Lin Si walked straight out, not stopping for a second. As he passed the ward’s entrance, he accidentally bumped shoulders with someone dressed entirely in black.
Lin Si lowered his head. “Sorry.”
The man, however, took off his sunglasses and grabbed Lin Si’s arm. “You’re here too?”
Lin Si’s eyes widened. “You…”
Five years ago, he had specifically looked into this person’s name—Zhou Li.
The very same Omega he had seen at the top floor of Shengshi when he went to beg Lu Shaoming.
“Surprised to see me?” Zhou Li smirked and glanced toward the ward. “How could I not be here at a time like this?”
Lin Si pulled his mask higher over his face.
“You came for the same reason I did,” Zhou Li whispered in his ear. “To see how he dies.”
Lin Si turned his head away.
“Oh? Acting all righteous now?” Zhou Li grabbed his arm and tried to pull him aside, but he hadn’t expected Lin Si to be much stronger than him.
Lin Si easily reversed the grip, pinning Zhou Li’s wrist. “What do you want to say to me?” he asked coldly.
Zhou Li laughed, a little manic. “No need to put on an act with me. You’re here for the same reason I am, aren’t you? Or do you actually think you’ll get a share of the inheritance? You’re an Alpha—if you say Lu Shaoming slept with you, who’d even believe it?”
Lin Si shoved him away forcefully. He watched as Zhou Li stumbled against the hard wall but didn’t bother holding back his strength.
“Are we close?” Lin Si asked. “Why do you care what I do?”
Zhou Li tilted his head. “Playing high and mighty now? Weren’t you the same back then? Crying your eyes out at Shengshi, begging Lu Shaoming. How are we any different? Now that it’s all over, why not just be happy together?” He narrowed his eyes. “Did you know where Lu Shaoming was before he had his stroke? He was in my bed. Thought he was still something, but he was just a useless old man. Barely moved a few times before collapsing—I thought he was just tired, but turns out he’d had a stroke! And then he never woke up again. Hahahahahaha! Isn’t that hilarious?”
Lin Si suddenly withdrew his hand and, for once, cursed. “You’re sick in the head.”
“Oh, please—you’re just as happy as I am, aren’t you?” Zhou Li sneered. “You and I are no different! Or do you think that because you’re an Alpha, he treated you differently? That he couldn’t bear to hit you? Or maybe—”
Before he could finish, Lin Si slammed him into the wall with his elbow, a loud thud echoing through the hallway.
Zhou Li winced in pain, baring his teeth—but he still laughed. “Lin Si, you’re just pretending. You came here because you couldn’t wait for Lu Shaoming to die!”
Just as Lin Si clenched his jaw, struggling to control himself, a warm arm gently pulled him away, settling him at the person’s side.
Zhou Li, his throat sore from being pressed down for too long, braced himself against the wall, coughing violently. He glared at Lin Si and Lu Wei with deep, venomous eyes, but Lu Wei’s gaze was so cold—like freshly sharpened steel—that after just a few seconds, Zhou Li turned his head away.
Lu Wei grasped Lin Si’s wrist and led him away.
As the elevator doors closed, Lin Si’s breathing finally turned ragged, his hands and feet trembling slightly.
It was rare for someone to anger him to this point. Lu Wei had to squeeze his palm to calm him down.
“Next time, don’t bother with people like that.”
Once inside an empty office, Lin Si immediately turned around and gripped Lu Wei’s hands, looking up at him.
“I’m not…” Lin Si grabbed his other hand as well, his words stumbling. “I came to the hospital because I wanted to see Lu Shaoming, but I’m not as bad as he said. I didn’t spend every day praying for this to happen. I hated Lu Shaoming, but I…”
Lin Si didn’t even know why he was saying all this. He wasn’t trying to defend himself, nor was he trying to prove he was a good person. His mind was just a mess, Zhou Li’s words were ringing in his ears, forcing him to question himself—was it true? Had he been waiting for Lu Shaoming’s death all along?
He hadn’t even known why he came here in the first place. But now, holding onto Lu Wei, pouring everything out, he felt like he could finally understand himself—like he could find his way out of the fog.
“I just wanted him to stay like before… Just lying there. He didn’t have to die…”
“Baby.” Lu Wei pulled him into his arms. “You’re just here to say goodbye.”
Lin Si froze for a long time before burying his head against Lu Wei’s shoulder. His quiet sobs gradually turned into uncontrollable cries. He wrapped his arms tightly around Lu Wei, repeating “I’m sorry” over and over again.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for,” Lu Yan gently patted his back, his eyes slightly damp as he lowered them. In a soft voice, he said, “It’s all in the past now.”
Everything—the life they had been forced to live because of Lu Shaoming, the darkness, the days without light, the unspeakable hatred and the pain they could never put into words—had all disappeared, fading away silently with the extinguishing of his fate.
