Chapter 62
Lu Wei’s lawyer had been waiting outside the door for a long time. After knocking several times, he had no choice but to interrupt the two people embracing each other.
“Sit here for a while,” Lu Wei gently touched Lin Si’s cheek. “I’ll go handle this.”
Lin Si nodded in his palm. “Mm.”
Lu Wei gave him a deep look before standing up to leave. But after taking only two steps, Lin Si grabbed his hand.
“Will they make things difficult for you?” Lin Si asked.
“It won’t be that easy,” Lu Wei said, gently squeezing his fingers to reassure him.
Lin Si got up as well. “I don’t want to sit here alone. I’ll go find Lu Nan. He should be able to help you.”
“Go to Director Li instead,” Lu Wei said. “He’s handling the death report. There won’t be many people there. Wait for me there.”
He didn’t want Lin Si to get caught up in the tangled web of politics and personal grudges. Without waiting for Lin Si’s agreement, he placed a pair of sunglasses on him and sent him to Director Li’s office.
After entrusting Lin Si to Li Donghao, Lu Wei hurriedly left.
Lin Si’s thoughts followed him as well. Sitting in the office, he neither looked at his phone nor drank any water—just sat there in a daze.
“You don’t have anything to say to this old man, do you?” Li Donghao joked. “Should I call Ji Cheng over to keep you company?”
Lin Si shook his head. “No need. I’ll just sit here.”
“That’s fine too,” Li Donghao said, writing something down. He glanced at Lin Si before looking back at his notes. “Lu Shaoming’s hospitalization was sudden, and he didn’t leave a will. The few times he was conscious, he never finished what he wanted to say. Now, Lu Wei has to deal with a pack of people acting like shrews. It won’t be easy.”
Hearing this, Lin Si clenched the fabric of his clothes, eyes wide with worry. “Then what should he do?”
Li Donghao chuckled. “I thought you weren’t that close to him, but you seem pretty anxious.” He added, “I was worried it was just him throwing himself at you one-sidedly.”
“It’s not like that,” Lin Si murmured.
The phrase ‘throwing himself at you’ felt too harsh. Embarrassed by the elder’s criticism, Lin Si’s face flushed red and white. He sat back down on the sofa, but soon after, he drifted into another daze.
Li Donghao lifted his gaze, puzzled for a few minutes. He finished processing the surgical records before speaking again.
“Did he never tell you about the past?”
“What past?” Lin Si asked.
Li Donghao stacked the death report and surgical records neatly before moving to sit across from Lin Si.
“I know you suffered a lot under Bu Wannian,” he said, his expression turning serious. “Actually, we spoke five years ago. In the operating room.”
Lin Si looked completely lost.
If there was a time in his life he least wanted to remember, it was five years ago. And within that, the hours in the operating room were an unshakable nightmare.
Like a small animal avoiding harm, he had chosen to forget those memories.
“You probably weren’t fully conscious then,” Li Donghao continued, his brows tightly furrowed. “I’m a specialist in glandular neurology, but I wasn’t part of the research team. Lu Shaoming once invited me, but Bu Wannian… you know what kind of person he was. The research team under him was rotten to the core. Nothing good could have come from it. So, in principle, I never should have assisted with that surgery.”
“But the day before your operation, Lu Wei found me and revealed what the research team was planning to do. I never imagined they would be insane enough to perform a clinical trial on a living person with nothing but theoretical foundations! Given their level of technology at the time, the probability of a successful glandular transplant was so low it wasn’t even worth calculating. And they had no plan for what to do if it failed. If the surgery went wrong, your original glands wouldn’t be able to be re-implanted. You’d be left as someone without glands!”
Li Donghao seethed with hatred, his teeth itching as he spat, “People with underdeveloped glands are already short-lived—how many years can someone without glands live? Bastards! They’re nothing but a bunch of bastards!”
A cold sweat broke out across Lin Si’s back. His lips had gone completely numb.
“I originally wanted to file a direct report,” Li Donghao said, “but your surgery was too soon. I didn’t have the resources, and Lu Wei didn’t have time to arrange the right channels. The report would have been intercepted before it even left the city. So instead, Lu Wei and I made a plan—during your surgery, I would ensure your safety.”
Lin Si felt like he was forgetting how to breathe. He opened his mouth, but only a silent question came out.
“You must be wondering how we managed to do it, right?” Li Donghao shook his head, finally feeling a bit of relief as he caught his breath. “My task was only to ensure your survival without ever compromising on the removal of your gland. Lu Wei is the key.”
“What do you mean?” Lin Si finally managed to whisper.
“Lu Wei is a genius hacker—you must have heard about him,” Li Donghao said. “He hacked into the medical system and altered your gland compatibility data. Since I was connected with him in real-time, he replaced your data the moment I confirmed your vitals were stable. The system then showed that your gland was suffering from oxygen deficiency, and the genetic database flagged an anomaly in the compatibility report. That’s why the surgery was urgently halted.”
Recalling the moment, Li Donghao still broke out in a cold sweat. “A few more minutes, and I would have had no choice but to hold a scalpel to Bu Wannian’s throat to make him stop. And even then, I might not have been able to save you on that operating table.”
Back then, Lin Si had thought it was just a senseless, painful nightmare. He never would’ve imagined that behind it all, Lu Wei and Li Donghao had gone to such great lengths to save him.
Seeing his dazed expression, Li Donghao took a sip of water, then casually added fuel to the fire.
“The day of your surgery, he was going through his first-ever rut,” Li Donghao said. “It was truly unheard of. In all my years, I’ve never known an Alpha who could still have the willpower to get up and handle something like that during their first rut.”
“You and him have an extremely high compatibility rate—one of the rarest cases of perfect pheromone matches in the world,” Li Donghao said. “The first time he saw you, it took less than half a day before he entered his rut.”
“He was lying in the hospital for two days, and no one knew why he suddenly woke up. But he forced himself to stay conscious, contacted me, and pulled all of this off. At first, I didn’t believe he could do it—I was already prepared to storm the operating room. But in the end, he actually succeeded.”
Li Donghao let out a sigh. “At the end of the day, we were incredibly lucky. You were incredibly lucky. If any part of this plan had gone wrong, it would’ve been a disaster.”
Lin Si’s shoulders slumped, his arms weakly pressing against the sofa. His fingers trembled slightly, leaving only a faint impression on the cushion.
After everything—after all the twists and turns—fate had played a cruel joke on him. In the end, it was Lu Wei who had freed him from his nightmare.
“Lu Shaoming is dead, and everything from the past…” Li Donghao said. “As someone who was there, telling you this in person—maybe it’ll help you see things more clearly.”
Tears fell, one after another, landing on his pants and spreading into dark stains.
Li Donghao handed him a box of tissues. “Before Bu Wannian was removed from power, I never told anyone about this. Lu Wei had been secretly gathering witnesses and evidence. At that time, I don’t think he even liked you yet, so this wasn’t something we needed to bring up. Saying it would’ve only caused trouble.”
Lin Si shot to his feet so fast that he forgot his sunglasses. His eyes were red as he headed straight for the door, only for Li Donghao to stop him.
“Are you stupid?” Li Donghao pushed him back inside. “Lu Wei is out there dealing with things. If you rush out now, you’ll just be making things harder for him.”
Lin Si was shoved back onto the sofa. He lowered his head, covered his eyes with his palm, and let out quiet sobs.
Li Donghao patted his back. He felt guilty, but he didn’t regret telling Lin Si the truth at this moment.
Emotion churned inside Lin Si, threatening to tear his heart from his chest. He sucked in a sharp breath, gripping the sofa as he trembled through each inhale and exhale. Eventually, the office fell silent.
By the time Lu Wei returned, Lin Si had stopped crying. He sat there calmly, his posture almost the same as usual—maybe even a little more composed and proper.
But the moment the door opened and Lin Si saw Lu Wei, he threw himself forward. Halfway there, he twisted his ankle and stumbled, but he still managed to cling to Lu Wei’s waist, burying his head against his chest.
From an unpleasant first encounter to years of tangled emotions, they had finally closed the gap between them completely.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Wei slid his arms under Lin Si’s and lifted him slightly. “Did you fall? Are you hurt?”
Li Donghao, having completed his task, picked up the documents and walked out, not forgetting to close the door behind him.
Lin Si tightened his hold around Lu Wei, saying nothing.
They stood like that for a long time, until Lin Si finally pulled away. He rose onto his toes and pressed a light kiss to Lu Wei’s lips.
Lu Wei’s heart, which had been as stil as a lake, suddenly pounded wildly. He stared at Lin Si in disbelief.
Lin Si held onto his shoulders and kissed him again.
An Alpha’s lips weren’t hard.
They were soft—just like his. Warm and comforting against his own.
Lin Si hid his face against Lu Wei’s neck. “Director Li told me about what happened before.”
“What?”
Even a genius couldn’t form a coherent thought in front of an Omega this soft.
Lin Si quietly tugged on the hem of Lu Wei’s suit jacket. “About my surgery.”
Lu Wei understood immediately. His eyes flicked toward the door, displeased that Li Donghao had chosen now to tell Lin Si everything. He turned back and took Lin Si’s hand. “So you kissed me because of that?”
“Mm.” Lin Si didn’t notice the shift in Lu Wei’s tone. He only asked in a quiet voice, “Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
“It didn’t matter whether it was you or someone else—I would have done the same thing. It wasn’t something I did to hold over you,” Lu Wei sighed. “I thought… I thought you resented me because of him.”
Lin Si recalled the harsh words he had said to Lu Wei before and couldn’t help but feel deeply guilty from time to time.
He pulled away from Lu Wei’s embrace, staring straight at him, then nervously grasped his hand. “I didn’t know before, but now I do,” he said seriously, enunciating each word. “I regret it so much. I was petty and treated you badly. I’m sorry.”
Lu Wei simply gazed at him, not responding right away. (T/n: I can understand why ML paused for a bit here becoz he can’t proof that Si cub’s are actually from his heart or just a by product of his guilty🤔🤔)
Lin Si waited anxiously. Seeing that Lu Wei wasn’t saying anything, he let go of his hand and put some distance between them. “Or… are you upset that I kissed you just now? I didn’t think too much about it, I just… kissed you. Twice.” (T/n: Gawd I really know our Si cub is innocent but the way he said it looked a lot like a green tea🤦)
He clenched his fists. “If you’re mad, you can ignore me for a few days…” But then he remembered that Lu Shaoming had just passed away, and Lu Wei had spent the whole day dealing with a mess of people. Maybe he wasn’t in the mood for these kinds of conversations.
He quickly corrected himself. “I’ll go back to the set and reflect on my actions. When you have time—when you’re ready to talk to me—just let me know.”
“Baby,” Lu Wei pulled him back. “I never wanted you to repay me for anything. That’s not something that requires your gratitude.”
Lin Si took a breath, lowered his arms, and stood still. “Then what do you want me to do?”
As soon as he spoke, warmth settled on his shoulder. The next moment, Lu Wei’s weight pressed against him. He instinctively braced his heels, steadying himself so Lu Wei wouldn’t topple them over.
A tired, raspy voice sounded against his shoulder. “This is enough.”
Author’s Note: Ah, little one, an Alpha’s lips aren’t hard, but other things are. Maybe test that out next time? (No inappropriate meaning intended :D)
