“Your family’s company? Who are you, exactly?” Yu Wei frowned deeply, scrutinizing Jiang She with suspicion.
Jiang She replied nonchalantly, “Can’t you guess?”
Yu Wei’s lips twitched as he sneered, “Are you joking?”
There was no way such a coincidence could exist. Besides, Jiang Qifeng’s public biography and encyclopedia entries made no mention of any family members. Furthermore, given Jiang Qifeng’s relatively young age, it was hard to believe he had an adult son of Jiang She’s age.
Perhaps Jiang She did have some connection to the Jiang family, but at best, he was likely a distant relative.
Jiang She raised his eyes lazily and retorted, “Do you think I find this amusing? What would I gain by joking with you?”
Although Song Mian and Chu Jiangmin had been bystanders until now, they could see that Yu Wei had completely lost face.
Song Mian had tried to interrupt Yu Wei’s boasting a few times earlier, but since Jiang She hadn’t explicitly revealed his identity, she felt it wasn’t her place to expose it for him. Besides, today’s gathering was nominally a reunion for Chu Jiangmin and Yu Xinrong, and she didn’t want to let such a complicated situation ruin the atmosphere.
But Yu Wei had pushed too far, and in the end, it was Jiang She himself who broke the silence. Perhaps this gave the younger guests some satisfaction, but as parents, they would have preferred that this scene hadn’t unfolded at all. Now, the meal felt awkward for everyone involved.
Chu Jiangmin awkwardly stepped in to make introductions. “This is… Jiang Qifeng’s son, the chairman of Jiang Pharmaceutical. We hadn’t met before, so we weren’t familiar with him. But he’s a classmate and good friend of Tao Tao.”
Yu Wei’s expression completely crumbled.
Looking back, there had been signs all along. While everyone else waited in line for a table, Jiang She and his group were immediately escorted to their seats.
Moreover, despite the presence of several adults at the table, the servers had paid particular attention to Jiang She, consulting him on every detail.
When the topic of the Jiang company came up, Jiang She had demonstrated a deeper understanding of the firm than Yu Wei, who was actively preparing for an interview there.
Yu Wei hadn’t picked up on these clues earlier, leading to his current embarrassing predicament.
Yu Xinrong’s expression was equally unpleasant. Having reached his current status, it had been years since he’d experienced such a public humiliation. Typically, his words carried authority, and others deferred to him. To be put in such a position today because of his son’s behavior was a serious blow to his pride.
To be fair, while Yu Xinrong respected the power of the Jiang family, he wasn’t particularly intimidated by them, as they operated in entirely different industries.
Unfortunately, the awkwardness stemmed from the fact that Yu Wei was currently applying for a position at Jiang Pharmaceutical, the most lucrative and promising opportunity among all the companies he had applied to. This was why Yu Xinrong had taken the trouble to accompany him to Huai City for the interview.
If Yu Wei hadn’t boasted so recklessly earlier, sharing a meal with Jiang She might have been a chance to foster goodwill and build a connection. Now, that possibility seemed out of reach.
After a moment of silence, Yu Xinrong managed to force a smile. Despite everything, he was far more composed than his son.
“Old Chu, that’s not very fair of you. Why didn’t you mention this earlier?”
Although he smiled as he spoke, there was an unmistakable tone of reproach in his voice. If Chu Jiangmin had mentioned Jiang She’s identity at the start, Yu Wei wouldn’t have made a fool of himself.
Yet, Yu Xinrong couldn’t help but wonder—how could the son of someone with Jiang Qifeng’s background be so grounded? Most children from such families were sent to elite international schools, groomed for leadership, and involved in family business operations long before they graduated.
Chu Jiangmin, a straightforward and honest man, was caught off guard by Yu Xinrong’s question and didn’t know how to respond.
After all, he hadn’t known Jiang She before today. How could he have started the conversation by casually announcing, “By the way, this is Jiang Qifeng’s son”? That would’ve been absurd.
But he couldn’t explain this openly at the table, so he could only offer an awkward smile, avoiding further confrontation.
Chu Tao felt very uncomfortable with his parents being overshadowed by Yu Xinrong, so he bluntly said, “Uncle Yu, Jiang She is just my friend, and my dad is your friend. Today is just a class reunion, so what Jiang She’s family does doesn’t really matter, right?”
Jiang She tugged at the corner of his mouth, casually leaning toward Chu Tao, and draped his arm around his shoulder. “Whatever Chu Tao says goes.”
His actions were so natural that no one could possibly misunderstand their relationship. It was like they were extremely close friends, casually hanging out and sharing a relaxed bond.
The only person at the table who was focused on eating was Chu Xingning. He had waited in line for quite some time and was really hungry.
Sijichun was indeed one of the hottest private restaurants in recent years, and the flavors were exceptional. If not for the high prices, it might even be more famous.
Chu Xingning loved mushrooms, and while no one else at the table had picked up their chopsticks yet, he scooped a large spoonful of mushroom soup and mixed it into his rice, eating it with a spoon. His cheeks puffed up, and his beautiful eyes squinted in satisfaction.
“Come on, eat! Why aren’t you guys eating?”
Chu Xingning slurred as he spoke, his mouth full of food.
Song Mian quickly replied, “Oh, eat, eat! We’ve just been chatting too much.”
The scene had indeed gotten a bit out of control, so Song Mian made a strong effort to redirect everyone’s attention and urged Yu Xinrong and Yu Wei to eat.
Yu Wei sneaked a glance at Jiang She. Seeing that Jiang She was casually tapping on Chu Tao’s shoulder with his fingers, he lost interest in continuing to press the issue. Finally, he sighed in relief.
The muscles in Yu Wei’s face twitched, and he breathed in tightly before softly speaking to Yu Xinrong, “Dad, let’s eat.”
Yu Xinrong took a deep breath, picked up some food with his chopsticks, probably hoping to let the matter pass quickly.
Chu Xingning picked up a plate of honey-fried cherries and popped one into his mouth. His eyes lit up with delight, and he excitedly turned to Chu Tao. “It’s really delicious!”
Chu Tao smiled, his eyes narrowing with a pleased expression. “Right? Jiang She recommended it.”
Yu Wei looked at Chu Tao again and finally realized that this person was no simple figure.
When he had first met Chu Xingning, all his attention had been on him, and he hadn’t paid much attention to Chu Tao. But now, Chu Tao was different. He was the one closest to Jiang Qifeng’s son. From his every move, it was clear how close the two of them were.
Yu Wei finally noticed that Chu Tao was quite good-looking. However, his demeanor was strong, reserved, and not as flashy as Chu Xingning, which made him harder to notice at first.
Chu Tao was like the moonlight falling from the sky at night—quiet, deep, and even the glow around him felt cold.
Although everyone says the moonlight is borrowed from the sun, once night falls, no one can see the sun.
It was a shame, though—he was an alpha.
Between alphas, there was only competition, and with looks like that, it was a real waste.
Chu Xingning raised an eyebrow. “Looks like Jiang She knows you like sweets.”
Chu Tao lightly bit his cheek, his gaze lingering. “I eat a lot at school, and he saw it.”
Song Mian smiled gently and turned to Yu Xinrong. “These two brothers have loved sweets since they were little. We couldn’t stop them. Now that they’re older, they don’t eat as much, but they’re still craving sweets every day.”
Yu Xinrong gave a meaningful sigh. “It’s good to enjoy sweets, but at our age, we can’t eat too much, afraid of getting diabetes.”
Chu Jiangmin wholeheartedly agreed. “That’s true.”
The atmosphere seemed to ease, and the older generation started chatting while eating.
Song Mian curiously asked, “Has Xiao Yu got a girlfriend? If he comes to work in Huaishi, won’t that be troublesome?”
Yu Xinrong sighed, “I don’t interfere with his matters. I heard he had a few Omega relationships abroad, but they all ended. This kid has high standards and is obsessed with looks. He insists on finding someone good-looking. If you ask me, he’s immature.”
Song Mian smoothly responded, “It’s normal for young people to like good-looking people. The kid is excellent, there’s no rush.”
Yu Wei suddenly asked, “Haven’t the younger brothers dated anyone?”
Song Mian was taken aback but quickly replied, “Oh, they’re still in high school! They shouldn’t be thinking about relationships right now. They’re too busy with their studies!”
Yu Wei’s heart skipped a beat, but he still kept his composure. “It’s normal for high school students to date now, especially among my friends abroad. Most of them started dating in middle or high school, and after the pheromone matching, how can anyone resist?”
Song Mian forced a smile. “Domestic schools are strict, and if you don’t focus on studying, you won’t get into a good university.”
Yu Wei poked at the tofu in his bowl. “Both younger brothers are quite handsome, surely they’re not without people chasing them?”
Chu Xingning was busy taking a photo of the honey-fried cherries with his phone, planning to post it on his social media.
Yu Wei, sitting across from him, couldn’t help but gaze at Chu Xingning’s face.
Chu Xingning had eaten with great enjoyment, and the cherry he had eaten left some of the red syrup on his lips. He looked exquisite, and his way of eating was elegant. The way his tongue licked the syrup off his lips was both cute and captivating.
Yu Wei’s throat tightened. He wasn’t sure if Chu Xingning was more tempting or the honey-fried cherries.
Song Mian, unaware that Yu Wei was interested in Chu Xingning, seized the opportunity to make a statement now that they were discussing early relationships.
“Xingning has been popular since he was little, with many people chasing after him. We’ve been quite worried about it, but fortunately, he’s sensible. He never paid attention to those trivial matters, and his grades have always been stable. We think he should focus on studying and wait until university to think about relationships.”
At this moment, Chu Xingning had just sent the photo of the honey-fried cherries to Pei Jiang. Hearing Song Mian’s words, he accidentally swallowed the cherry pit that he had been holding in his mouth.
Chu Xingning: “……”
Pei Jiang seemed to have been waiting by the phone, as he sweetly sent a message: “The cherries are as cute as my brother.”
Chu Xingning, feeling guilty, quickly pulled his phone back under the table.
Song Mian continued, “Recently, an Omega was pursuing Tao Tao, with a 99% match, even sending him cakes and stuff. He seemed really sincere. But the kid’s grades weren’t very good, so Tao Tao turned him down. You could tell it was hard for him, and he even had a fever that day. But right now, he understands what’s most important.”
Chu Tao’s movements froze slightly.
Last time, because of Su Jingtong, he had staged a little performance in front of Song Mian to provoke her guilt and clear the way for Jiang She.
But he didn’t expect that Song Mian would mention it in front of Jiang She, thinking he had gotten sick and had a fever because of Su Jingtong.
Jiang She smiled, secretly grinding his teeth. His fingers slipped under the table, and mischievously, he pinched Chu Tao’s inner thigh.
Chu Tao couldn’t help but shudder, his back tensing up.
Song Mian jumped in surprise, asking, “Tao Tao, what’s wrong?”
Chu Tao swallowed hard, pressing Jiang She’s hand down with his palm, stammering, “C-cramp…”
Jiang She tried to pull his hand out a few times, but Chu Tao’s grip was strong enough that he couldn’t get his hand free.
So Jiang She propped his chin with one hand and gave Chu Tao a nonchalant glance, deliberately teasing him, “I didn’t know, Tao Tao, you were feeling so uncomfortable. Why didn’t you tell me?”
Author’s Note: Jiang She, you have no heart!
Tao Tao had a fever, and you took advantage of him!
