Chapter 134
Aunt Zhu accompanied Zuo Anning, sitting quietly in the private room, waiting.
During this time, Zuo Anning remained silent, looking deeply troubled.
Every time footsteps sounded in the corridor, she would stand up to check.
Later on, she decided to leave a small crack in the door and quietly sat, waiting behind it.
For two quarters of an hour, there were occasional sounds in the corridor, but no one came by.
Aunt Zhu breathed a sigh of relief in her heart. Perhaps the madam just felt suffocated in the mansion, so she came out for some fresh air.
As she was thinking this, suddenly a steady footstep approached from afar, slowly coming in their direction.
Aunt Zhu’s heart jumped, and Zuo Anning slowly stood up.
The footsteps didn’t stop, passing by their private room door directly.
Aunt Zhu stood behind Zuo Anning, glanced outside through the crack, and suddenly felt cold all over, trembling with fear.
Though the figure was slightly hunched, it was clear it was a man!
Aunt Zhu began to pray silently in her heart, but then there was a light knock on the door of the adjacent room.
Creak—
The door opened and closed again.
But the man didn’t come back.
Aunt Zhu slowly raised her hand, tightly covering her mouth.
Madam…Madam actually met a man in private, and they were alone together!
She felt her vision darken, but she had to consider her young miss.
Zuo Anning stood quietly there, making no sound, which startled Aunt Zhu.
She didn’t dare to make a sound, walked a few steps to Zuo Anning, and saw her originally rosy face turn pale, feeling as if her heart was being cut by a knife.
Zuo Anning raised her hand, slowly grabbed Aunt Zhu’s arm, and swayed slightly.
“Miss!”
Aunt Zhu was terrified, mouthing the words.
Zuo Anning tightly bit her lower lip, not daring to make any sound. Her long eyelashes trembled uncontrollably, looking extremely fragile.
The next moment, she shook her head at Aunt Zhu, then walked to the wall connecting to the adjacent room, pressing her ear against it.
She wouldn’t, couldn’t believe her mother would do such a thing until she heard it with her own ears!
As her ear pressed against the wall, Zuo Anning seemed to hear faint sobbing.
In the private room,
As soon as Madam saw Li Xusheng, all the fear and worry she had been feeling these days burst out, and she couldn’t help but throw herself into his arms, crying.
She cried so much that her shoulders trembled, and tears soaked Li Xusheng’s clothes.
Li Xusheng didn’t lift a hand to comfort her. His gaze was fixed on a screen in front of him, his face filled with complex and tangled emotions.
He used to hate her so much.
From his youth, he had poured all his love into her. He had tried his best and suffered all kinds of hardships, just to rise above and be worthy of her.
He regarded her as the most precious treasure, wishing to give her his heart.
But what about her?
She spoke of their oath so sweetly, calling him “Victory Brother” time and time again. But in reality, she was disdainful of poverty, loved wealth, was vain and selfish, and even malicious to the extreme!
Just because the heir of the Duke of Yan took a liking to her, for that sky-high wealth and status, she actually tricked him into drinking a sleeping draught, then let her father deal a fatal blow to their whole family!
When he narrowly escaped death, he swore to kill her entire family!
Enduring humiliation and hardship for so many years, he finally achieved something. Originally, he had planned to seek revenge, but his mother fell seriously ill, on the brink of death.
Just when he was in despair, the Second Prince kindly intervened and spent a lot of money to save his mother’s life.
As a person, he knew he should repay kindness with gratitude. So, he obeyed the Second Prince’s orders and temporarily put his revenge plans on hold.
Recently, the Second Prince finally gave him a task: to get close to the wife of the Duke of Yan’s heir, gain her trust, and then let her gather information about the Qiao family for them.
Although he outwardly resisted this task, deep down, he felt a secret delight.
He knew he was despicable.
Perhaps because the love from the past was too deep, even to this day, he had never let her go.
Her days at the Duke of Yan’s mansion were not good. Zuo Heying was philandering, fickle, and she became a laughingstock.
So when he appeared again, pretending to be affectionate, she was first afraid, then shocked, and finally cried and begged for forgiveness, confessing her sins.
Seeing her miserable state made him feel satisfied, but when he saw her tears, he felt a wave of sadness in his heart.
The second time they met, he pulled her onto the bed.
Perhaps Zuo Heying couldn’t satisfy her, or perhaps it had been a long time since Zuo Heying had been with her, she was reluctant at first, but then surrendered under his pressure, repeatedly calling him “Victory Brother”.
He felt disgusted in his heart. She no longer had the right to call him that, but for some reason, he couldn’t help but feel triumphant and pleased.
He kept telling himself that this was for the sake of His Highness’s great cause.
During this time, even though His Highness had given orders for everyone to stay put, she came to urge him several times, and he couldn’t resist coming to see her.
“If you have something to say, say it quickly. If you want to reconcile, let’s get it over with quickly,” Li Xusheng said, grabbing Mrs. Zuo’s arm and dragging her towards the soft couch behind the screen.
Mrs. Zuo struggled, her emotions getting the better of her for a moment, and her voice raised slightly.
“So, you only care about those things in your heart! Why have I sought you out several times in the past month, but you refused to see me?”
“Are the words you said all lies? If so, you should have stabbed me at our first meeting, instead of pretending to please me!”
Li Xusheng abruptly stopped, his heart tortured over this period of time, also needing a breakthrough.
He suddenly lowered his head, looked at the emotionally charged Mrs. Zuo, couldn’t help but fiercely grip her arm, and gritted his teeth: “Yes, I should have stabbed you to death the first time I saw you, then ended it myself! You don’t deserve my affection. Your Victory Brother died a long time ago! He died because of your vanity and cruelty!”
“You know how much I hate you. Why did you accept me? You should have scolded me from the start, so I could have the heart to kill you!”
Li Xusheng’s eyes widened, the veins on his forehead bulging. His expression twisted, revealing his pain and turmoil for everyone to see.
Mrs. Zuo, originally filled with unease and grievances, was suddenly stunned and burst into tears, her eyes turning red.
She couldn’t express how much regret she felt. If she hadn’t coveted the wealth of the Duke of Yan’s mansion, perhaps she could have been like Zuo Hejing, having a husband who cherished and loved her, and a complete family.
“Xusheng…”
Seeing Mrs. Zuo shed tears, the force in Li Xusheng’s hand suddenly eased, and he turned away, asking in a hoarse voice, “Why did you come looking for me? I shouldn’t have come out today. If you have news about the Qiao mansion, speak now.”
Hearing this, Mrs. Zuo’s heart suddenly panicked. She couldn’t hide her pregnancy anymore.
If Zuo Hejing found out, that bastard might beat her to death!
Thinking of this, she panicked, took a few hurried steps forward, and blurted out, “Xusheng, I’m pregnant with your child!”
