Third-Rate Melodrama | Chapter 15

When Wei Yuhe returned, Lu Yan was curled up on the couch hugging a pillow, watching TV. Hearing the door open, he immediately tossed the pillow aside and dashed towards the entrance.

“Where did you go today? Why are you only getting back now?” Lu Yan ran over barefoot, not even bothering to put on his slippers, and leaned against the entryway, asking Wei Yuhe.

It was as if Wei Yuhe didn’t even hear him. He silently changed his shoes and walked past Lu Yan without a word.

“What’s wrong?” Lu Yan quickly grabbed Wei Yuhe, stopping him in his tracks.

Only then did Wei Yuhe turn his head to look at him. “Let go.”

Not only did Lu Yan refuse to release him, but he also leaned closer, practically draping himself over Wei Yuhe’s shoulder, sniffing him like a curious puppy.

“Where did you go today? Why do you smell like perfume?” Lu Yan grumbled, refusing to let go. His face puffed up like a pufferfish, obviously annoyed.

There was a distinct whiff of women’s perfume on Wei Yuhe—could it be he went out on a date today?

Wei Yuhe’s expression, already cold, now seemed even frostier as he stared at Lu Yan.

“What did you do today?” After staring at him for a while, Wei Yuhe finally asked.

“I… I just stayed home waiting for you!” Lu Yan stammered. Lying to Wei Yuhe had almost become second nature, and the words slipped out without a second thought.

Wei Yuhe’s silent gaze made Lu Yan’s heart race with unease. Did Fang Lin actually send him a photo?

“Did you happen to get any photos or anything today?” Lu Yan asked cautiously.

“No,” Wei Yuhe replied, his face impassive.

Lu Yan sighed in relief. Judging by Wei Yuhe’s expression just now, he’d almost thought his lie had been exposed.

“What photo?” Wei Yuhe asked suddenly.

Lu Yan waved it off. “Nothing, just asking.”

He clung to Wei Yuhe, almost leaning his entire weight onto him. “So, where did you go today?”

Wei Yuhe remained silent, prompting Lu Yan to ask again, “Did you go on a date with a girl?”

“With who?” Lu Yan looked up at Wei Yuhe with wide, curious eyes.

“It’s none of your business.” Wei Yuhe’s tone was still expressionless, but he sounded slightly irritated.

Lu Yan couldn’t understand what had suddenly gotten into him. Could his date have gone poorly? But that didn’t make sense; even when Lu Yan had clung to him before, he’d never seen him this openly annoyed.

“Are you mad?” Lu Yan asked, testing the waters.

Wei Yuhe briskly pushed Lu Yan’s hand away, heading straight upstairs and closing the door behind him, not saying another word. Lu Yan was left completely baffled. What had just happened?

He couldn’t figure out what was going on with Wei Yuhe. Just a few days ago, everything had been perfectly fine.

Standing outside Wei Yuhe’s door, Lu Yan knocked a few times, but there was no response from inside. Finally, he gave up and returned to his own room.

As he lay in bed, he couldn’t stop thinking about it—who knew that this guy could be so stubborn when he was upset?

The next morning, Wei Yuhe was already gone. Just like the day before, he didn’t pick up any calls or reply to any messages. As Lu Yan sat on the couch feeling bored, the doorbell suddenly rang.

He thought maybe Wei Yuhe had forgotten his key, but to his surprise, it was Fang Lin.

Fang Lin looked equally surprised to see Lu Yan. She was holding several bags, and Lu Yan stood in the doorway, neither helping her with them nor letting her in.

“Senior, would you mind helping me out?” she asked finally.

Only then did Lu Yan reach out to take the bags from her.

“What brings you here?” he asked, setting the bags down by the couch and looking at her suspiciously.

“I came to drop off some things,” she said, pointing at the bags on the floor.

Lu Yan glanced inside the bags, seeing they were filled with men’s clothing. He didn’t even have to guess who they were for.

“Yesterday, when Wei Yuhe went shopping with me and my mom, she bought these,” Fang Lin explained.

“Yesterday?” Lu Yan looked at the bags, then back at her. “So you were with Wei Yuhe yesterday? Shopping together?”

Fang Lin nodded. “Yeah, he left in a hurry when we got back, so he forgot to take these with him. That’s why I’m bringing them over.”

Lu Yan finally understood why Wei Yuhe was so upset yesterday and why he’d asked what he’d been up to.

“Hey, junior?” Lu Yan suddenly leaned closer, blinking at her.

He hadn’t even said anything, but Fang Lin’s cheeks turned a deep shade of red instantly.

She quickly glanced at Lu Yan, too shy to let her gaze linger on his face. Finally, she stammered, “W-what is it?”

Lu Yan was all too familiar with that reaction—the blushing, stammering signs of a girl with a budding crush.

He raised an eyebrow, amused. He’d thought Fang Lin liked Wei Yuhe, but it seemed she was just as flustered around him, too.

“Why is your face so red?” Lu Yan asked, feigning confusion and looking concerned. “Are you feeling sick?”

Before Fang Lin could react, he had already plopped down beside her, looking at her with such genuine concern that her heart started racing even faster.

“N-no, I’m fine,” she stammered, scooting away a bit and avoiding his gaze.

She finally understood why Lu Yan was called the king of charm. With that look, that expression, that intent gaze—who could resist?

Just as Lu Yan was about to say something else, a cold voice interrupted, “What are you two doing?”

They turned to see Wei Yuhe standing in the entryway, his gaze icy as he looked at them. He seemed to have just finished exercising; his face was still flushed, his hair damp, and he was enveloped in a light mist of sweat, making him appear more vibrant than usual. Lu Yan’s heart skipped a beat.

“You’re back?” The moment Wei Yuhe entered, Lu Yan’s gaze locked onto him, completely losing interest in teasing his junior.

Wei Yuhe’s stare was even colder than his tone. “What are you doing?”

Fang Lin waved her hands frantically, while Lu Yan remained calm, smiling mischievously with bright eyes, looking at Wei Yuhe like a clever little fox.

Following him upstairs, Lu Yan asked, “Are you mad at me?”

Wei Yuhe didn’t respond, so Lu Yan continued on his own, “Is it because I lied yesterday?”

“Or because you saw me with someone else?”

Lu Yan tugged at Wei Yuhe’s shirt, trapping him at the bathroom door, his posture making it clear he wouldn’t let him shower until he spoke up.

Wei Yuhe frowned, staying silent. He was angry about both things, yet he felt he didn’t really have the right to be.

Lu Yan, as sly as ever, could easily read Wei Yuhe’s inner conflict. Grinning, he asked, “So, are you mad about both?”

“I can explain,” Lu Yan said, looking up at him with innocent eyes, still gripping his shirt.

Seeing that Wei Yuhe wasn’t pulling away, Lu Yan quickly started explaining, “The person I had lunch with yesterday was my roommate. He’d just broken up with his girlfriend, and I was comforting him.”

“Besides, he’s as straight as they come. Our relationship is purer than mineral water.”

“Then why did you lie?” Wei Yuhe asked.

Lu Yan pouted. “It’s because you went out without telling me. You didn’t pick up or reply, so I thought when you got back, I could act cute and complain a bit, maybe get you to feel sorry for me.”

“I wasn’t trying to lie on purpose. I swear I won’t lie to you again.” Lu Yan clung to his arm, practically hanging off him like a koala.
