Third-Rate Melodrama | Chapter 16

Wei Yuhe’s grip tightened a little, but in the end, he didn’t push Lu Yan away. He knew all too well that Lu Yan’s obedient, sweet side was just an act. Underneath, he was wild and mischievous. Yet, he simply couldn’t bring himself to be harsh with Lu Yan.

He couldn’t kick him out, nor could he bear to watch him waiting outside his room. Even though he was angry, the most he could do was ignore him.

“You don’t like seeing me with someone else, huh? Are you jealous?” Lu Yan’s smile grew a bit wider. “You like me.”

Wei Yuhe frowned. This was the second time Lu Yan had asked him that. His answer was still, “No.”

Only this time, even he didn’t notice that his tone lacked the same conviction as the last time.

Lu Yan pressed on, undeterred. “You obviously like me but won’t admit it.”

“Just admit you like me. I like you so much; I’d treat you really well.” Lu Yan’s voice had a hint of a whine, as well as an almost bewitching quality.

Wei Yuhe looked at Lu Yan for a moment and, as if possessed, asked, “Do you say the same thing to everyone else you like?”

Lu Yan quickly shook his head. “No. I’ve never liked anyone like I like you, and I’ve never chased anyone like this.”

Staring at Lu Yan, something warm crept into Wei Yuhe’s usually cool gaze, and even his voice softened a little. “How long will you like me?”

“Forever. Even if you stop liking me, I’ll still like you,” Lu Yan answered without a second thought.

Seeing a hint of hesitation in Wei Yuhe’s expression, Lu Yan seized the opportunity. “Let me chase you.”

“Really, seriously chase you.”

Wei Yuhe stayed silent, just staring blankly at Lu Yan. Lu Yan shook his arm playfully and asked, “Is that okay?”

Wei Yuhe forced himself to suppress the temptation to give in. He turned his head away, saying lightly, “No.”

“Chasing you is no good either?” Lu Yan asked.

“It’s no good,” Wei Yuhe replied, expressionless.

Lu Yan refused to give up. “Then what would be good?”

Even Wei Yuhe didn’t know what he wanted anymore. Before, he had wanted Lu Yan to stay away. Then, he thought if he ignored Lu Yan, eventually he’d get bored and leave.

But now, he no longer wanted Lu Yan to distance himself, nor did he want to use the cold shoulder as a strategy.

Now, all he could think about was, how long would Lu Yan really chase him? Would he give up before he even got the chance to agree? Would he move on to the next target? Or, if they did get together, how long would Lu Yan stay interested?

He knew Lu Yan was capricious, but he couldn’t help the swirling thoughts. Ultimately, he concluded that there was no way Lu Yan could like him forever.

But if he kept letting things go as they were, Lu Yan would soon move on to his next prey. And he didn’t want to see Lu Yan with someone else, nor did he want to end up like Lu Yan’s past flings.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Lu Yan shook Wei Yuhe’s arm again.

Wei Yuhe pried Lu Yan’s hand off, shut the bathroom door, and Lu Yan, seeing he was getting nowhere, gave up for the moment and went downstairs. Fang Lin was still sitting on the couch, and when she saw Lu Yan, her face turned an even deeper shade of red.

Lu Yan found this rather odd. How could she stay red for this long?

“What’s up with… your face?” Lu Yan gestured at her cheeks, asking with a touch of uncertainty, “Could it be an allergic reaction?”

Fang Lin touched her burning cheeks and waved her hands frantically. “No, no.”

Lu Yan raised an eyebrow. “That’s weird. You must be thinking about something naughty to be this red, huh?”

It was just a teasing remark, but it made Fang Lin blush even harder.

“Are you… are you and…?” Fang Lin stammered, her cheeks growing redder with every word until she could barely get a complete sentence out.

“Me and what?” Lu Yan’s curiosity was piqued, and he stared at her, prompting her to continue.

“Are you and Wei Yuhe together?” Fang Lin’s voice suddenly rose several decibels, and the second she asked, her whole face nearly turned as red as a tomato.

Lu Yan froze for a moment. Was she here to interrogate him? But judging by her expression, that didn’t seem to be the case.

“What’s it to you?” Lu Yan asked in return.

Fang Lin replied, “I was just curious.”

“Curious?” Lu Yan was even more puzzled. What was there to be curious about?

“There are a lot of people in class who ship you two as a couple. And you were upstairs with him for so long just now…” Fang Lin explained.

Lu Yan chuckled. “So, you want to ask what we were doing up there for so long?”

This time, Fang Lin didn’t seem as shy; maybe her inner fujoshi had ignited with enthusiasm. As soon as Lu Yan finished, she eagerly nodded.

Lu Yan countered, “What do you think we were doing?”

Hearing this, Fang Lin’s mind seemed to start racing in overdrive, and her face just couldn’t stop blushing.

Lu Yan snapped her out of her fantasies. “Then why did you tell me not to pursue Wei Yuhe before?”

“Do you like him too?” Lu Yan raised an eyebrow at Fang Lin.

She immediately shook her head. “No, I don’t.”

“Everyone in school says you’re fickle, that you get bored quickly and don’t stay in relationships for long.”

Lu Yan shrugged. “That’s nonsense. My longest relationship lasted almost a year.”

Fang Lin looked genuinely shocked, but what surprised her even more was what Lu Yan said next: “And I was the one who got dumped. If they hadn’t broken it off, we might have lasted even longer.”

Mouth agape, Fang Lin stared at Lu Yan, realizing that rumors weren’t always true.

“Seems like Senior really liked that person,” Fang Lin remarked.

Lu Yan shrugged. “Yeah, I did like them a lot back then.”

Then, as if remembering something, he chuckled. “But now I don’t. I’ve found someone I like even more.”

Fang Lin didn’t need to guess who he was talking about. Lu Yan’s pursuit of Wei Yuhe was even grander than his past flings—he’d even moved into his place.

“I liked him from the first moment I saw him,” Lu Yan said, reminiscing about seeing Wei Yuhe giving his speech at the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala.

Fang Lin muttered under her breath, “That’s just being attracted to his looks.”

Lu Yan suddenly turned to her, asking, “Are there a lot of girls in your class chasing after him?”

She waved her hands, flustered. Did he think everyone was as bold as he was?

“No one in class dares to approach Wei Yuhe. With looks like his, who would have the nerve to even try?”

Lu Yan nodded thoughtfully. “True.”

After a pause, he asked, “What about the guys?”

Fang Lin shook her head like a rattle. “Definitely not.”

That sort of thing was pretty niche, after all.

Instead of feeling relieved, Lu Yan seemed a bit disappointed. “That just means there’s no one for me to compete with. Without competition, how would he know I’m the best?”

Fang Lin glanced at Lu Yan, who was sprawled on the couch with his chin resting on a pillow. She thought to herself, honestly, there’s no need for competition. Anyone better looking than Lu Yan wouldn’t be as good at flirting, and anyone as good at flirting wouldn’t look as handsome as him.

When Wei Yuhe came downstairs, Lu Yan and Fang Lin were deep in conversation. They didn’t even notice him until he was standing right next to them.

Fang Lin’s cheeks were rosy, while Lu Yan’s eyes sparkled with a mischievous smile. Who knew what they’d been discussing, but only when he drew near did they finally realize he was there.
