Third-Rate Melodrama | Chapter 22

Wei Yuhe had just finished washing up and lay down on his bed, drifting off almost immediately. Normally, he wasn’t the type to get sleepy after drinking—his tolerance was quite high. But tonight, all his energy had been drained by Lu Yan, who was somehow more exhausting to handle drunk than sober.

In the middle of his sleep, Wei Yuhe was jolted awake by an icy sensation on his foot. Barely thirty minutes had passed since he’d fallen asleep.

The curtains in his room weren’t fully drawn, and the soft moonlight mixed with the light from outside, casting a few dim patches across the room.

Frowning, Wei Yuhe looked at the odd rise and fall under his blanket, suspecting he was still half-dreaming. But when he felt that same icy touch on his leg, he finally snapped awake.

Throwing off the blanket, he found a huddled-up figure at the foot of his bed. Who else could it be but Lu Yan?

Seeing Lu Yan there, Wei Yuhe almost thought he was still dreaming.

But when he felt Lu Yan’s ice-cold hand pressing against his calf, he realized this wasn’t a dream.

“What are you doing?” Wei Yuhe pulled his leg back, looking at Lu Yan with a frown.

Lu Yan’s eyes were still unfocused, and his hair was a mess from squirming around under the blanket. With flushed cheeks—whether from lingering alcohol or being stifled under the covers—he looked positively disheveled, and anyone who saw him would have had to admit there was something undeniably suggestive about his appearance.

“Sleeping,” Lu Yan muttered, crawling from the foot of the bed to the head and plopping down on the pillow.

Wei Yuhe regretted not locking his door. That was how Lu Yan managed to sneak in.

“Go back to your own room,” Wei Yuhe said.

Lu Yan shook his head, “No.”

Half-awake, with droopy eyes, he stubbornly tugged on the blanket.

Wei Yuhe couldn’t help but wonder if Lu Yan was sober. He leaned closer, trying to determine if he was truly drunk or just pretending.

Lu Yan blinked in confusion, staring at Wei Yuhe as he moved closer.

Not understanding why Wei Yuhe was so near, he still managed to flash a sweet, obedient smile, the corners of his lips curving in an irresistibly innocent expression.

Yet, no matter how close he looked, Wei Yuhe couldn’t tell if Lu Yan was really sober. As he neared, he caught a whiff of alcohol and realized Lu Yan hadn’t showered.

“You…” Wei Yuhe didn’t know whether to sit back or lie down.

If Lu Yan wanted to sleep in his room, he’d at least have to take a shower.

“If you’re going to sleep here, go take a shower,” Wei Yuhe said, not quite sure why he was negotiating with a drunk.

Lu Yan didn’t budge, so Wei Yuhe added, “If you don’t shower, go back to your own room.”

This finally got through to Lu Yan. Before Wei Yuhe could even process what was happening, Lu Yan rolled off the bed and dashed into Wei Yuhe’s bathroom.

Wei Yuhe: “…” He’s really not faking it?

After what felt like the hundredth glance toward the bathroom, Wei Yuhe couldn’t resist anymore and went over to knock on the door.

“Are you done yet?” He was seriously doubting a drunk’s ability to shower himself.

There was no answer. He knocked again. “Lu Yan?”

Still no response. Unable to wait any longer, Wei Yuhe opened the door and was relieved to find Lu Yan lying comfortably in the bathtub, fast asleep.

For a moment, he’d worried that Lu Yan had passed out in there. Instead, he’d just… peacefully soaked himself in the bath.

“Lu Yan,” Wei Yuhe called out, not stepping inside, but standing by the door.

Lu Yan mumbled something incoherent, completely lost in his sleep, with no signs of waking up.

Left with no other choice, Wei Yuhe wrapped Lu Yan in a towel and carried him back to the bed.

The warm bath had given Lu Yan’s cheeks an even rosier glow. Wrapped up snugly like a little burrito, with only his flushed face peeking out from beneath the blanket, he looked cozy and serene.

Lying beside him, Wei Yuhe thought, This time, he should stay put.

Sure enough, Lu Yan didn’t move all night. However, even though he lay there like he’d been placed, Wei Yuhe still didn’t sleep very well.

It wasn’t Lu Yan’s lack of movement that kept him awake—it was Lu Yan himself. Even lying perfectly still next to him was enough to stir Wei Yuhe’s thoughts. Besides, Lu Yan was lying there with nothing on under the blanket, completely bare.

And of course, a towel didn’t exactly count as clothing.

When Lu Yan woke up in the morning, his temples throbbed painfully. As his mind cleared, he realized he wasn’t in the guest room. In fact, he was in Wei Yuhe’s room.

Looking around, he didn’t see any sign of Wei Yuhe.

How had he ended up in Wei Yuhe’s room? And in his bed?

Lu Yan tried to sit up but discovered he was tightly bundled. Kicking off the blanket, he realized he was wrapped in a towel—nothing else.

What kind of situation was this?

Sitting there in confusion, still wrapped in the towel, Lu Yan tried to piece things together, but his memory was blank. No wonder people said alcohol caused trouble—he must have drunk something more like Meng Po soup than alcohol.

Luckily, the towel was large enough to wrap around him like a makeshift coat, though his bare legs still peeked out below.

“Wei Yuhe?” Lu Yan called tentatively, but there was no reply.

Thinking he’d better sneak back to his room to get dressed, he took two steps before freezing.

He had stopped right outside the bathroom door, which was open.

On the floor inside were his clothes—shirt, pants, even underwear—all strewn around haphazardly. Clearly, he’d been in quite a hurry to undress when he’d come in to shower last night.

Snap out of it, Lu Yan thought, patting his face to shake off the mental images.

Lu Yan had never really known what it felt like to be embarrassed. But imagining that scene, with Wei Yuhe as the witness, he finally understood what it was to feel truly mortified.

Did it really happen?

He lifted the towel slightly and looked down. His skin was clean and unmarked, without a single suspicious trace.

It was hard to tell if he felt relieved or… disappointed.

As he lingered in this odd mix of emotions, he didn’t hear the door opening behind him.

Standing in the doorway was Wei Yuhe, fully dressed, staring at Lu Yan, who was still wrapped in just a towel, standing with the towel hanging loosely in an unintentionally revealing position.

Wei Yuhe: “…”

One night of surprises hadn’t been enough?

Lu Yan hadn’t expected Wei Yuhe to appear so suddenly. He didn’t realize his predicament until he felt a draft, quickly clutching the towel tighter around himself.

This was the first time Wei Yuhe had ever seen Lu Yan blush, aside from when he was drunk.

He hadn’t expected Lu Yan to blush, but he couldn’t deny he was feeling a bit embarrassed himself.

“I… just saw… a mosquito. I was trying to swat it.” Lu Yan stammered for a good while before coming up with this less-than-brilliant excuse.

“Mm,” Wei Yuhe, knowing there couldn’t possibly be mosquitoes in the room, still nodded along, trying to ease the tension between them.

“Let’s eat,” he said before closing the door again.

Lu Yan stared blankly at the door as it closed, muttering softly, “I should go back to my room to get dressed.”

Who he was talking to—himself or Wei Yuhe—was unclear.
