Three Years of Marriage: Even a Military Union Must End in Divorce Chapter 38

Chapter 38: The Strange Old Man

It wasn’t safe for a man to keep a savings book either, so it was fine to keep it with her for now. She could return it to him if and when she and Shen Mo got a divorce.

Anyway, she wouldn’t spend Shen Mo’s money recklessly.

Speaking of money, she really needed to find a job opportunity after so many days.

When she went to the military base to see Shen Mo yesterday, the sight of the medical room gave her some inspiration.

Although she had considered becoming a teacher because of Zhiqi, she still preferred her original profession.

She would ask Sister Li if there were any job openings at the local clinics when she had the chance.

A couple of days ago, by a twist of fate, she helped Sister Li’s daughter fix her dislocated arm. Sister Li had said she would treat them to a meal, and just two days later, she came to invite them.

They couldn’t refuse Sister Li’s invitation, so they agreed.

When it was time for the meal, Sister Li came to invite them. Jiang Ning took Zhiqi along and happened to meet Shen Mo at the door, so they went to Sister Li’s house next door together.

As soon as they sat down, Sister Li and Commander Li started bringing the dishes to the table. Commander Li’s family of four, plus Jiang Ning’s family of three, made seven people in total. Sister Li had prepared five dishes and a soup, with three of the dishes being meat dishes.

Shen Mo only found out today about his wife’s good deed of healing and saving lives. When he heard Sister Li praising his wife non-stop, he felt both surprised and proud.

Jiang Ning was eating with her bowl in hand when she sensed a special gaze on her.

She looked up and saw a pretty girl sitting to Sister Li’s left. She had only found out today that Sister Li had an older daughter, who had just turned eighteen.

Sister Li had given birth to her older daughter the second year after marrying Commander Li. As for her younger daughter, she had been an unexpected pregnancy at the age of thirty-six.

Li Xingyue’s gaze met Jiang Ning’s, and as soon as their eyes locked, Li Xingyue quickly lowered her head, almost burying it in her rice.

They finished the meal harmoniously, and Sister Li asked them to stay and chat for a while.

Since the meal was prepared by the women, the task of washing the dishes was left to the man who had never done any household chores.

Shen Mo went to help, and the yard was filled with women. Zhiqi, being shy, also followed into the kitchen.

As for the four women, they gathered around the table to enjoy the moonlight and snack on sunflower seeds.

Jiang Ning grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds and asked, “Sister Li, is there a lush, towering mountain around here?”

She wanted to go up the mountain to collect herbs for medicinal oils.

“A mountain?” Sister Li thought for a moment. “Yes, there is. Behind the military camp is a whole range of mountains. It’s about a half-hour walk from here.”

“Good, I got it.”

After confirming the route with Sister Li, Jiang Ning planned to go up the mountain to look for medicinal herbs the next day.

In the morning, after breakfast, when Shen Mo went to the military camp for training, Jiang Ning prepared to go up the mountain with a basket on her back. Unexpectedly, Zhiqi, who was on holiday today, saw her with the basket and quickly grabbed a small basket of his own, indicating that he wanted to go with her.

When Uncle Shen wasn’t home, he was the man of the house and had to protect Jiang Ning closely.

Jiang Ning didn’t mind having a little tail following her.

Zhiqi was not just a little tail but also a little guide. Jiang Ning had been worried about getting lost, but the child knew the way and even found a shortcut to take her.

All the way up the mountain, from the moment they entered the forest, Jiang Ning found many mountain goods and even a lot of expensive medicinal herbs on the market.

By the time they fully entered the mountain, Jiang Ning’s basket was already full.

Seeing all the precious medicinal herbs on the mountain made Jiang Ning very excited.

“Rehmannia.”

“Angelica.”

“Gastrodia.”

Jiang Ning kept digging while muttering to herself.

Suddenly, she saw something in a pit and rushed over in two steps, “Wild mountain Ganoderma!”

Just as she was about to dig out the Ganoderma by clearing the surrounding soil, an old man suddenly appeared in front of her out of nowhere. He stared at Jiang Ning and said, “Little girl, do you know what these things are?”

Jiang Ning looked up at the old man who had appeared before her, “Who are you?”

The old man, who looked to be nearly seventy years old, didn’t answer her question, “You haven’t answered me yet. Do you know what this is?”

The little old man had quite a peculiar temperament.

Could he be some kind of extraordinary master?

In the novels she had read, extraordinary masters usually lived in deep mountains and old forests.

Thinking about it, she said, “Wild mountain Ganoderma, beneficial for qi and blood, nourishing the heart and mind, and strengthening the spleen and stomach.”

“What about this one?” The old man casually pulled up a medicinal herb.

“Pokeweed, diuretic, reduces swelling, promotes bowel movements, commonly known as a laxative.”

“What about this one?”

“This one.”

“And this one…”

The old man continued to pull out several more medicinal herbs for Jiang Ning to identify, and she answered fluently each time.

The old man’s eyes grew brighter with each answer.
