Shen Mo’s embrace was broad and strong. Jiang Ning, listening to his frantic heartbeat due to worry, nestled in his arms and felt a strange sense of grievance welling up inside her.
She raised her hand and grabbed the front of Shen Mo’s clothes, saying, “But I’m still a little scared.”
“Don’t be afraid,” Shen Mo reassured her, even reaching behind her to gently pat her back for comfort.
The night wind was always a bit chilly, and as a cool breeze swept by, Jiang Ning instinctively shivered.
Shen Mo quickly took off his jacket and draped it over Jiang Ning, effortlessly lifting her up.
It wasn’t a romantic princess carry, but rather he had her sit in his sturdy arm, like holding a child.
Jiang Ning was astonished. Although she wasn’t heavy, she still weighed about ninety pounds. How could this man lift her so easily?
Sitting on the ground, Huang Xiaodong was struck by lightning when he heard Jiang Ning say she was scared. He vividly remembered that this small woman, now nestled in the man’s arms, had just incapacitated the three thugs for life.
Jiang Ning pushed Shen Mo, saying, “You… you should put me down.”
Everyone else gets a princess carry, but with this man, it’s either over the shoulder or like a child.
“Scared, huh?”
Shen Mo didn’t listen to her and put her down, still holding her in his arms.
Holding her felt the same as the first time he had carried her—his wife felt light as a feather.
His wife usually ate a lot, so why didn’t she gain any weight? Maybe he hadn’t been buying enough meat. He should buy more from now on.
He carried her towards the family compound, and as Huang Xiaodong watched their interaction, he felt as if he had already eaten his fill despite being starving.
When Shen Mo carried Jiang Ning to the entrance of the family compound, he told the soldiers at the gate about the three unconscious thugs nearby, instructing them to detain the men and send them to the police station the next day.
Jiang Ning was carried all the way home by Shen Mo.
People in those days didn’t have much of a nightlife. Once it got dark, almost every household would close their doors to rest and prepare for the next day’s work.
When they reached the entrance of the family compound, the soldiers’ eyes lingered on them, signaling Shen Mo to put her down. But Shen Mo refused to let her go, carrying her all the way back home.
As Shen Mo carried Jiang Ning home, his heart was far from calm.
The journey was also filled with silence.
He kept thinking about how he could better protect Jiang Ning. Most of his time was spent at the military camp, leaving him with little opportunity to be by her side and protect her.
The more he thought about it, the worse he felt, and his expression became grim.
He wasn’t upset about being a soldier; protecting the country was his dream. He was frustrated that he couldn’t properly protect his wife.
Jiang Ning, in his arms, noticed the change in his expression and suddenly reached up to cup his face.
The sudden soft touch on his face startled him.
“What are you thinking about?”
Jiang Ning, cupping his face, could guess what was on his mind the moment their eyes met.
She said, “Don’t feel guilty.”
A soldier’s first priority must be the country.
Jiang Ning’s profession was different from his, but as a doctor, her patients were also her top priority.
Shen Mo didn’t expect that she could see through his thoughts.
Jiang Ning said, “I will take care of myself, don’t worry.”
Shen Mo felt guilty and blamed himself, but he agreed, saying, “Okay, I won’t worry.”
It wasn’t until the next day when Jiang Ning saw Shen Mo at the clinic door that she realized he hadn’t really let go of his worries.
Her shift usually ended around the same time as Shen Mo’s training, sometimes a bit later due to patients. Today, she was late because a patient came just as she was about to leave.
Jiang Ning was deeply focused on treating a patient with a bloated stomach when Shen Mo appeared at the clinic door.
She was so engrossed in her work that she only noticed Shen Mo after she had removed the silver needles.
“Why are you here?” Her bright eyes fell on him, a mix of surprise and delight.
“To pick you up,” Shen Mo replied, looking into his wife’s sparkling eyes. He immediately resolved to come and pick her up more often.
Old Master Huang had gone into the mountains to find herbs again today, and Huang Xiaodong wasn’t around, so Jiang Ning had to treat and prescribe medicine for the patients.
“Alright, wait for me a moment.”
She prescribed the medicine for the patient and tidied up before leaving the clinic with Shen Mo.
As soon as she stepped out, Jiang Ning noticed the bicycle outside. It looked brand new, probably just bought.
The seat had been thoughtfully padded with a sponge.
Shen Mo walked over, swung his leg over the bicycle, and sat on it with one foot on the ground and the other on the pedal.
He held the handlebar with one hand and extended the other towards Jiang Ning, saying, “Come here.”
Jiang Ning walked over, handed him her hand, and Shen Mo helped her sit sideways on the back seat.
Jiang Ning was wearing a skirt, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to straddle the seat directly—that would be too unladylike.
Seeing her in a skirt, Shen Mo took off his jacket and carefully put it on her, buttoning it up. The jacket was just long enough to cover all of Jiang Ning’s legs.
The jacket fit Shen Mo perfectly, but on Jiang Ning, it looked like a child wearing an adult’s clothes.
Shen Mo looked at Jiang Ning wearing his jacket.
It gave him the illusion that she was in his arms.
Shen Mo blushed at his own thoughts. He had held her and slept together with her, but he still couldn’t help blushing when he was alone with Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning enjoyed seeing him shy. It was amusing when he turned red and became flustered.
Shen Mo was truly simple.
She liked simple people.
Maybe… she liked Shen Mo.
She suddenly wanted to test whether Shen Mo treated her well because she was his wife or because he liked her as a person.
Men of this era were generally very responsible. Once something was their responsibility, they would take it seriously.
After settling down, Jiang Ning extended her fair and slender arm around Shen Mo’s slim waist, boldly hugging him and even feeling his abs.
Shen Mo noticed that his wife had been getting closer to him lately. Without him saying anything, she had taken the initiative to hug him.
His heart started racing and pounding.
However, before he could be happy for a few seconds, he suddenly heard—
“Shen Mo, when can we get a divorce?”
