The days passed by uneventfully.
Jiang Ning noticed that ever since she mentioned that the condition for a kiss was based on Shen Mo’s behavior, the man had been finding ways to do things before her and then looked at her expectantly, as if seeking praise.
Jiang Ning was amused by him and would always give him a kiss.
The man, having tasted the sweetness, worked even harder.
Over the next few days, Jiang Ning had planted some simple vegetables in the soil under the tree—potatoes, green beans, bok choy, peppers, and more. She just needed to wait for them to grow before they could be eaten.
On the other hand, she had also asked someone to buy some flower seedlings from the town that could be both ornamental and medicinal. She planted them by the fish pond, and when the flowers bloomed, the courtyard would be full of vitality.
That day, Shen Mo picked Jiang Ning up from work and brought her home. Zhiqi was pulling out the weeds that had grown in the vegetable garden and flower beds. The weeds had grown faster than the flowers and vegetables.
Seeing them return, Zhiqi quickly clapped the dirt off his hands, washed them, and then ran to the main hall to bring out two cups of water.
Although he hadn’t said anything yet, his eagerness was evident, indicating that he had something to say.
Shen Mo went to park the bicycle, and Jiang Ning carried a porcelain mug to sit on the swing.
“Go ahead, what is it?” she asked.
“Teacher Feng said he’s coming for a home visit tomorrow,” said Huo Zhiqi, looking at Jiang Ning’s expression.
Seeing the little one looking at her, Jiang Ning reached out and patted his fuzzy head. “I thought it was something serious. Did your teacher say what time he’ll be coming?”
Zhiqi replied, “He said in the morning.”
Jiang Ning thought for a moment. Master Huang had mentioned that he would be at the clinic all day tomorrow, so it would be fine without her. She nodded and said, “Alright, I won’t go to the clinic tomorrow morning.”
The next morning, Teacher Feng, whom Huo Zhiqi had mentioned, arrived as promised.
When Feng Chuan arrived, Jiang Ning was tending to her flowers and plants in the yard.
Since Jiang Ning had to take care of her little seedlings and flowers at home, she wore a simple shirt and pants, with the sleeves rolled up to expose her forearms. As she stood up, her curves were highlighted by the sunlight, giving her an indescribable charm even in such ordinary clothes.
Looking at her exposed forearms, Feng Chuan couldn’t help but admire how fair her skin was.
Feng Chuan’s hair was parted in a neat 7:3 style, with every strand meticulously combed, clearly styled with care. He wore a shirt with a tie inside and a suit jacket over it.
Jiang Ning heard the footsteps and turned around, momentarily surprised by the other’s attire.
Wearing two layers in this weather, isn’t it hot? she thought.
“Zhiqi, bring out the stool,” Jiang Ning called out.
As soon as she spoke, a small figure appeared, carrying a stool.
Jiang Ning gestured for him to sit. “Teacher Feng, please sit.”
Looking at the sunlight in the yard, even though the trees provided some shade, the weather was still quite warm. Feng Chuan tugged at his collar, feeling a bit displeased. He thought it was odd that the host didn’t invite him inside, not even offering a glass of water.
Jiang Ning didn’t have much affection for Teacher Feng.
She couldn’t understand why he had suddenly decided to visit for a home visit.
At the last parent-teacher meeting, she had publicly challenged him, so she didn’t expect him to visit her home for a home visit.
Feeling a bit hot from tending to the flowers and plants, and with her hair becoming a bit disheveled and scratching her face, Jiang Ning took off her hair tie. Her cascading hair fell down to her slender waist before she quickly gathered it up and tied it into a simple low ponytail.
Feng Chuan’s heart skipped a beat uncontrollably.
As an intellectual, he had not yet married, not because he didn’t want to, but because his standards were too high and few women could meet his expectations.
He looked down on those crude types.
To be honest, from the moment he met Huo Zhiqi’s parent, he had felt a certain attraction. However, this beauty was already married.
At that moment, he was incredibly envious of the man who had married her.
He was quite confident in his own appearance. In the family compound, there were some military dependents who had just turned eighteen. Those girls often used the excuse of picking up their younger siblings to come and see him.
Most men in the military were rough and didn’t understand romance. A woman like this should be with someone like him, an intellectual.
Moreover, soldiers could die suddenly at any time, offering no security for the future.
Such a beautiful woman shouldn’t be left to someone else; being with him would be her best destiny.
Such a beautiful and radiant woman, if she were his, how stunning she would be in bed.
Thinking about this made Feng Chuan feel an unbearable itch in his heart.
Jiang Ning felt extremely uncomfortable under his gaze, her dark brows furrowing. “Teacher Feng? What brings you to our home?”
It was already a hot day, and Feng Chuan’s thoughts made him even more restless. He tugged at his collar. “Parent of Zhiqi, it’s quite hot today. Can we talk inside the house?”
Jiang Ning replied, “Oh, I’m afraid that won’t work. We’ve just planted some vegetables, and if a dog comes in and digs them up, it wouldn’t be good. So, I need to keep an eye on the yard.”
“Oh, alright then,” Feng Chuan said, an awkward smile appearing on his face. He hadn’t expected to be refused. In the past, when he visited other students’ homes, they always welcomed him warmly, offering tea and water with great care. This was the first time he had been rebuffed as a teacher during a home visit.
He took out a notebook from his bag and handed it to Jiang Ning, making sure to show off his Oriental Double Ten watch, which he had specially asked a friend to buy as an imported item.
It wasn’t available in the domestic market yet.
He said, “Zhiqi, well, his academic performance isn’t great. He’s usually quiet and doesn’t talk much. He’s not very bright either. This is a customized study plan I’ve made for him.”
Jiang Ning furrowed her brows and looked at the so-called study plan in his hand, but she didn’t take it.
Why does this teacher always like to criticize before getting to the point?
Seeing that Jiang Ning didn’t take it, Feng Chuan, without waiting for her to speak, had a sudden realization and said, “Ah, I forgot that you can’t read.”
Jiang Ning: “?”
Feng Chuan had specifically inquired before coming. The military dependent who had adopted Huo Zhiqi was from the countryside, and with the college entrance exams just resuming, how could she possibly know how to read?
“I’ll come back next time,” he said, picking up his bag and standing up.
He left quickly, and as he reached the door, he suddenly stopped and turned to look at Jiang Ning. “Comrade Jiang, if you ever want to learn to read, you can come to me anytime, and I’ll teach you.”
