The midwife was pacing anxiously inside the house. She knew how to deliver babies, but she couldn’t correct the baby’s position.
If this continued, both the mother and the child would be in danger. Although many people had lost their lives during childbirth, she didn’t want to see another life lost.
Jiang Ning quickly walked over. The pregnant woman was already exhausted from the effort, and her voice was not as loud as before.
Jiang Ning checked the situation and immediately took a ginseng slice from her medical kit, placing it in the woman’s mouth to hold.
“Don’t push for now. I’ll help you correct the baby’s position first,” Jiang Ning said.
“Doctor, I’m in so much pain, so much pain,” the pregnant woman suddenly grabbed Jiang Ning’s hand. “If something happens, please save my child first.”
Seeing the woman holding onto her and asking to save the child, Jiang Ning couldn’t describe her feelings at that moment. It was a testament to the strength of a mother.
Even in unbearable pain, she still thought of her child first.
Jiang Ning comforted her, “You will be fine, and so will your child.”
As she spoke, she had already taken out the silver needles, quickly and accurately finding the acupuncture points and inserting them. She first stopped the bleeding and then administered a few more needles to relieve the pain.
After inserting the needles, Jiang Ning stood up and moved to the pregnant woman’s belly.
The midwife had initially been skeptical, wondering if such a young girl could really handle the situation. But seeing Jiang Ning’s swift and precise needle insertion, which immediately improved the woman’s complexion, the midwife felt reassured.
In such a critical moment, as long as the person could save lives, it was good.
Jiang Ning placed her hands on the pregnant woman’s belly, feeling around, and then slowly corrected the baby’s position. After restoring the position, Jiang Ning wiped her forehead and taught her the Lamaze breathing technique, “Don’t waste your energy screaming. Follow your breathing, listen to me, take a deep breath, and then exhale…”
The midwife, seeing the position corrected, immediately brightened up and gave Jiang Ning an admiring look, then moved to help the woman give birth.
The pregnant woman, feeling less pain, gradually regulated her breathing, following Jiang Ning’s and the midwife’s instructions.
Giving birth was like walking through the gates of hell.
After several hours, Jiang Ning said, “The cervix is fully dilated, push.”
The pregnant woman, following Jiang Ning’s instructions, endured the intense pain, her sweat soaking her hair, but she didn’t slacken. She had to give birth to this child.
She had endured hardships and carried the child for months.
After several more hours, the pregnant woman finally gave birth to the baby around six in the morning the next day.
The moment the baby was born, the woman felt her body instantly lighten, and the intense pain subsided.
Jiang Ning instructed the midwife to hold the baby and cut the umbilical cord, then use a clean cloth to wipe and wrap the baby.
Seeing the baby born healthy, both Jiang Ning and the midwife breathed a sigh of relief. Delivering a baby was a physically demanding task, and everyone had been tense, holding their breath.
The midwife took the baby outside, and Jiang Ning brought a bowl of prepared brown sugar water for the woman to drink.
With the baby born, Jiang Ning stitched up the woman’s tears, applied medication, and inserted needles to relieve the pain.
After drinking the water, the woman held Jiang Ning’s hand, thanking her profusely and even crying, “Thank you, thank you, Doctor. If it weren’t for you, my child and I might not have made it.”
The midwife had told her from the beginning that if the baby’s position couldn’t be corrected, not only would the baby be in danger, but she might also lose her life.
This was a great life-saving favor.
Even in tears, the woman didn’t forget to ask Jiang Ning’s name, “Doctor, what is your name?”
Jiang Ning told her the name and then comforted her, “You’ve just given birth. Remember not to experience extreme joy or sorrow.”
Hearing Jiang Ning’s words, the woman stopped crying. She held onto Jiang Ning’s hand and wouldn’t let go, “I will have my husband give you a banner, and I’ll ask my grandfather to write you a letter of commendation. My grandfather is the village head. Which village are you from, Comrade Jiang?”
Jiang Ning patted her hand and said, “I’m from the military family compound here. Saving lives is a doctor’s duty, so there’s no need for commendation.”
Jiang Ning was an introverted person. She remembered that in this era, commendations were often broadcast, and the entire family compound would hear it, which would be quite embarrassing.
The woman said, “You’re a military family member! No wonder you have such an extraordinary demeanor, excellent qualities, and great medical skills.”
After delivering the baby, Jiang Ning was also sweating and felt uncomfortable with the sticky feeling. She had planned to go home immediately to take a shower and rest. However, the pregnant woman’s family was so enthusiastic that they insisted she stay for breakfast before leaving.
Unable to decline their hospitality, Jiang Ning stayed for a simple meal.
Before heading home, Jiang Ning went to the clinic. The previous night, she had hurriedly left and asked Huang Xiaodong to inform the guard at the family compound gate about her going to deliver a baby. The guard would then tell Zhiqi not to worry.
When Jiang Ning returned to the family compound, it was during the work hours. She rode her bicycle all the way back, attracting many glances along the way. Among those glances, she inexplicably sensed some hostility.
Jiang Ning didn’t think much of it. All she wanted at that moment was to quickly go home, take a shower, and sleep.
When she returned home, Zhiqi was about to go to school.
Seeing Jiang Ning come back, Zhiqi’s eyes lit up, “Mom.”
Jiang Ning reached out and patted his head, “I didn’t come home last night. Were you scared?”
“No,” Zhiqi shook his head, “The guard uncle told me yesterday that you went to help someone deliver a baby.”
Then he pointed to the kitchen and said, “Mom, I boiled some water for you to bathe in. It’s on the stove.”
Jiang Ning said, “Good, go to school now.”
After Zhiqi left for school, Jiang Ning had a good wash, shampooed her hair, and after her hair dried, she had a nice sleep.
In the afternoon, Jiang Ning was woken up by a knock on the door.
Hearing the knock, Jiang Ning put on her clothes and went to open the door. It was Sister Li.
As soon as Sister Li saw Jiang Ning, she immediately said, “Young Jiang, your Zhiqi got into a fight at school. Hurry and come with me!”
Hearing that Zhiqi had gotten into a fight, Jiang Ning’s expression changed immediately, and she quickly followed Sister Li towards the school.
As they hurried to the family compound gate, Jiang Ning was suddenly stopped by a stranger.
Jiang Ning looked up and saw the two soldiers she had helped on her way home from the clinic last time, one of whom was an officer.
Brigade Commander Liang, with a friendly and cheerful expression, looked at Jiang Ning, “It’s you! I was just about to go to the clinic to thank you for saving me last time.”
Seeing that he wanted to chat, Jiang Ning, who was in a hurry, said, “I’m sorry, but I have something urgent to attend to right now.”
Brigade Commander Liang noticed her urgency and immediately said, “Then go ahead and take care of your business.”
“Thank you,” Jiang Ning nodded and left.
As she hurried away, Brigade Commander Liang, seeing that she had come from the family compound, guessed that she might be the family member of an officer. He turned to the guard nearby, “Do you know that comrade?”
The guard, of course, recognized Jiang Ning and reported, “Yes, Brigade Commander. She is the wife of Deputy Regiment Commander Shen.”
Brigade Commander Liang asked, “Deputy Regiment Commander Shen? Shen Mo?”
“Yes,” the guard confirmed.
Brigade Commander Liang murmured, “There’s someone in this family compound with such excellent medical skills.”
Just as he was about to leave, a young man and an elderly man over sixty approached, carrying something in their hands.
The young man and the elder went directly to the guard and handed over what they were carrying, “Hello, I am the village head of the nearby Dahe Village. Please pass this banner to Doctor Jiang Ning, and this letter of commendation to your superiors.”
