Chapter 8 – So Pitiful
“Director, Director, look! Didn’t I say so? She definitely fainted. This little girl is polite—she wouldn’t have made us wait like this for no reason. If I had known earlier, I would’ve gone in with her. Everyone, come help! Let’s lift her up. Poor thing, she really looks pitiful.”
Hearing the nurse’s words, Song Jinxi was practically drowning in guilt. She immediately decided she had to treat the nurse to something delicious before leaving.
The hospital director, who had come along, quickly added, “Hurry and carry her back to the ward. You—go find a doctor!”
Once she was carried back to the ward, Song Jinxi opened her eyes at just the right moment, tears falling down her cheeks.
“Nurse, nurse sis, I’m sorry. I heard you calling me, but I had no strength to respond… I-I wanted to open the door for you, but I… cough cough cough cough… I’m really useless. Did you carry me back? Thank you… I’m so sorry for worrying you all and causing trouble! cough cough cough…”
“Oh dear, look at her—how pitiful! But seriously now, where are this kid’s parents? How could she be like this and no one even shows up?”
“Auntie, my dad’s at work. My stepmother—oh, I mean, my mom and sister—they should be home making food for me, right? After all, I’m the only eight-year-old in the family being sent to the countryside. They’d rather go hungry themselves than not feed me, unlike before. Maybe my breakfast is on its way now!”
“Good grief… is this child… slow in the head? It’s already afternoon, and she’s still talking about breakfast! No wonder she looks so pale—she’s starving! Clearly not her biological parents. How heartless! There’s a stepmother in our village too, oh boy, she spoils her own kids to death…”
“Wait, are you missing the point? The point is—they’re not feeding her! Abusing the kid! Starving her! She’s just eight and already being kicked out by her dad and stepmom, sent off to the countryside. Honestly, it’s true—get a stepmom, and you get a stepdad too. The power of pillow talk is not to be underestimated! Hahaha~”
Song Jinxi didn’t reply, just quietly kept pretending to be weak and frail. On the surface, she looked pitiful—but inside, she was laughing like crazy!
Suddenly, someone asked, “Excuse me, who is Song Jinxi?”
The nurse immediately stood up and leaned down to whisper to Song Jinxi, “I called the police. Don’t be scared. You need to stand up on your own—we can’t help you if you don’t.” Then she turned to the officer and said, “She’s Song Jinxi.”
“Hello. We received a report saying you may have been drugged. We’re here to investigate.”
Immediately, Song Jinxi acted like a frightened little bunny: “Drugged? Me? N-no, there’s no way! I—I ate at home. My dad personally brought me the food. I usually never eat enough, but last night, he suddenly got so nice to me—he insisted I sit and brought me the food himself! My dad’s finally starting to be good to me. You… you mustn’t accuse my dad falsely!”
Onlookers: “………” This kid’s an idiot!
Police: “………” Definitely suspicious. Sudden kindness? Needs to be investigated.
Nurse: “………” I’ve suffered the same kind of pain. I just wanted to shield you. Thankfully, you’re not stupid. I hope you seize this opportunity. I hope you find more happiness than I did.
Meanwhile, back at home, the stepmother Li Mei and Song Rou were dumbfounded—the house had been broken into! Before they could even start freaking out properly, Song Bai returned.
Seeing the state of the house, his first suspect was Li Mei—thinking it was her doing, especially since her family had stirred up trouble just a few days earlier.
But Li Mei and Song Rou were quick on their feet. With some clever maneuvering, they pushed all the suspicion onto Song Jinxi.
So, the three of them stormed toward the hospital, looking ready for war.
