Chapter 106 : Su Xieyun complains
After Su Xieqiu sent everyone out, she followed Chenchen and An an to the yard to practice boxing as part of her exercise routine.
She also planned to learn some self-defense techniques.
Since Han Zhenyu was often away, she lived with her two children at the foot of the mountain. If any bad guys came, they wouldn’t be at their mercy.
In fact, the main reason for her exercising was that some of the older women in the village were really annoying. They had foul mouths and loved to spread rumors.
Su Xieqiu wasn’t the type to keep quiet if provoked, there would definitely be arguments and maybe even fights.
Those old women were all large and strong, and with her smaller body, Su Xieqiu knew she couldn’t beat them.
If she learned a few grappling techniques, at least she wouldn’t be at a disadvantage and could intimidate anyone who tried to bully her.
When Chenchen saw her joining in, he laughed and worked even harder, occasionally giving her some tips.
Su Xieqiu wasn’t sure if his advice was correct, but she followed his instructions anyway.
After all, it was just shaking her arms and lifting her legs, there was no harm in that. Even if she didn’t learn the moves perfectly, it would still help her stay fit.
—
The next morning, Su Xieyun got up early, ready to head into the city to call home and complain.
Coincidentally, a few other educated youths also wanted to take a stroll around the city.
After a quick discussion, everyone who had arrived the day before decided to go together.
Since work would start the next day, today seemed like the perfect day to get familiar with the city and the roads.
A dozen of them made their way to Nanping County. Their first stop was the post office, where they could report their safety to their families.
Su Xieyun’s call was transferred several times before it was finally connected to her father, Su Dajun.
“Dad.” Su Xieyun burst into tears before she could even say anything. Hearing his daughter sobbing, Su Dajun became immediately anxious.
“Yunyun, what’s wrong? Did someone bully you?”
When Su Xieyun heard her father’s voice, she felt even more wronged. “Dad, it’s Su Xieqiu. She married a regular worker here and built a big house for her family. She doesn’t recognize me at all. I went to see her as soon as I arrived yesterday, but she didn’t even let me inside.”
“What? How dare that damn girl?” Su Dajun was furious upon hearing that.
He never expected his once-timid niece to be so bold.
How could she turn her daughter away like that? It was absurd!
Once Su Xieyun returned to Haishi, he would go and give that girl a good beating.
However, since he was far away and couldn’t help his daughter, he could only comfort her. “Yunyun, don’t cry. I’ll talk to your second uncle later and have him write a letter to that damn girl.”
“It won’t do any good, Dad. Su Xieqiu said she’s severed ties with her second uncle and second aunt.”
Su Dajun replied, “Impossible. I haven’t heard your second uncle say that. That girl must be lying to you. She’s probably afraid you’ll take advantage of her family.”
After hearing her father’s words, Su Xieyun thought it made sense.
That damn girl must have said that on purpose to stop me from staying in her house.
She gritted her teeth in anger, but there was nothing she could do at the moment.
Initially, she had wanted to tell her father about the embarrassing things Su Xieqiu had done in the village, but the phone bill was too expensive.
She was worried about not having enough money, so she quickly said, “Dad, Su Xieqiu has done a lot of shameless things since she came here. I’ve written all the details in a letter, and I’ll send it to you soon. You can show it to your second uncle and second aunt when the time comes.”
“Alright, I understand.”
Su Dajun then reminded his daughter, “Yunyun, be careful over there. Don’t go out alone. People in rural areas are bad.”
Su Xieyun muttered an agreement, “Hmm,” and quickly hung up.
When it was time to pay the phone bill, she felt a bit distressed but took out the letter from her bag again.
She had written it the previous night, filling four pages.
Most of the letter described how shameless Su Xieqiu was.
It also accused her of seducing men in the countryside to avoid labor. Not a single good word was written about her.
Feeling that sending an ordinary letter would be too slow, she gritted her teeth and paid extra to send it as a registered letter.
In this way, the family would find out sooner about what Su Xieqiu had been doing in the countryside.
After making a phone call and sending a letter, Su Xieyun followed the other educated youth to the supply and marketing cooperative.
These newly arrived educated youth had some money in their hands. Since young people often don’t plan well, they bought things without hesitation, such as peach cakes, date cakes, canned food…
When they returned, everyone was carrying food and daily necessities.
Su Xieyun bought half a pound of date cakes, a bottle of canned hawthorn, and two pounds of flour.
She had brought some snacks with her, but since she heard she would soon have to start work and might not be able to come to the city for a while, she feared there wouldn’t be enough food. So, she spent all her food tickets to buy more food and daily necessities.
As they returned, a few older people at the village entrance saw what they were carrying and looked a little envious.
The children were even more greedy, their mouths watering.
Su Xieyun felt a little proud and a bit disdainful.
She thought that these country people had never seen the world. They were so eager for just a little food, it was hopeless.
A few smarter educated youth lowered their heads and quickly walked ahead.
They didn’t want to share their snacks.
They didn’t want to make the villagers dislike them as soon as they arrived.
So, they hurried ahead, pretending not to notice the children’s gazes.
At the same time, they secretly glared at Qin Yao and Su Xieyun.
They thought, “I don’t know why these two are showing off here. This is someone else’s territory, and if they get hated, there are many ways to deal with them.”
Xiang Guoqiang and Luo Jie walked at the end. They were neighbors and good friends.
They had also bought a lot of food that day. The two looked at each other and stopped at the intersection.
After the other educated youth had gone far ahead, Xiang Guoqiang took out the pound of peach cakes he had bought and handed two pieces to each of the four elderly people who were sitting there talking.
The elderly people were surprised. They didn’t expect the young man to be so generous.
But since they were old, how could they ask a young person for food? They quickly waved their hands and refused, saying, “We don’t want it, young man. You can take it and eat it yourself.”
An old man smiled and said, “Hurry up and get the crops. The work in the fields is very hard. You city kids must not be used to it. You need to eat well to have the strength for work.”
“Grandpa, I have more here,” Xiang Guoqiang said, stuffing two more pieces of peach cake into the old man’s hands.
Both Xiang Guoqiang’s and Luo Jie’s families were relatively well-off, so they not only bought snacks but also canned meat.
Luo Jie also gave two pieces of mung bean cake to each of the children.
“Take it and eat it,” he said with a smile, gently patting a few children’s heads.
The older child whispered, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Xiang Guoqiang and Luo Jie didn’t rush back to the Youth League Home. Instead, they sat and chatted with the elderly.
Several children also came over with snacks.
The old man asked, “Where are you two from?”
“Grandpa, we’re educated youth who came to Hai City to work in the countryside.”
“Haishi, that’s a big city.”
The old man smiled and asked, “What are your names? My oldest grandson is only a few years older than you. When the time comes, I’ll ask him to talk to the captain and get you two assigned to his team. He’ll be able to look after you if anything happens.”
