Chapter 14 : A Shrew Cursing on the Street
She walked straight into Yang Lanhua and Han Baoguo’s room and saw that the cabinet containing grain was also locked.
Su Xieqiu laughed angrily and went to the door to pick up the brick and continue smashing it. Fortunately, the lock was small, and she opened it in just a few strokes.
She didn’t take the coarse grains but instead directly took out the half bag of flour, grabbed a few eggs, and went to the kitchen with the oil can.
Thinking that Han Zhenyu would be back soon, she didn’t do anything complicated. She first boiled a pot of water and made two large bowls of malted milk.
She made a pile of omelet, went back to the room to get the two cucumbers, and then went to the backyard to find a few smaller cucumbers to mix into a bowl.
It was the hottest time of the year, and this kitchen had poor ventilation. After finishing all these tasks, Su Xieqiu was already sweating.
She was just about to go to the backyard to wash her face when she heard someone knocking on the door.
She asked, “Who is it?”
“Me.” Han Zhenyu’s low voice came from outside.
Su Xieqiu opened the door from the inside and saw that he was sweating profusely and his gray homespun jacket was soaked. She quickly moved aside to let him in.
Han Zhenyu nodded slightly at her and went straight to the backyard. After a while, he came to the main room with his hair wet and shaking.
When he saw the food on the table, he realized that Su Xieqiu was the only one at home. He asked, “Are they back yet?”
“I’ve been working in the south for the past two days and won’t be home for lunch, so Han Meili and Zhang Qianyun brought the food over.”
Seeing him staring at the omelet and malted milk on the table, Su Xieqiu told him what had happened in the morning.
“Zhang Qianyun and Han Meili took all the food away, leaving us no bread. They also locked the door to the main room. I had no choice but to break the lock and pry open the cabinet to get the food and cook for myself.”
Han Zhenyu glanced at the broken door and then at the cabinet where the grain was stored, a smile flashing in his eyes.
He hadn’t expected this woman to become bolder. But it was a good thing this way. He thought they would have to think twice before bullying her in the future.
Su Xieqiu took a sip of malted milk, and seeing that he was still standing there, she called out, “Eat quickly. Do you still want to go up the mountain in the afternoon?”
Han Zhenyu sat down with a smile, drank a bowl of boiled water from the table, and then said, “Yes, we have to go. The team leader said that there will be several educated youth coming this time, so we need to build at least two large bunk beds, and the warehouse in the team also needs to be repaired, which requires a lot of wood.”
Su Xieqiu nodded and said, “I just boiled a pot of water. You can take some with you when you leave later.”
When Han Zhenyu came back, she noticed that his lips were a little dry, probably because he was thirsty.
The breakfast was a bit salty, and he hadn’t brought any water with him when he went out.
It was so hot today, and he was doing such heavy work. How could he not be thirsty?
Han Zhenyu wasn’t overly surprised by her sudden concern.
He knew that this woman was probably thanking him for helping her, so he smiled and nodded, “Okay.”
Although they were husband and wife, they had barely spoken to each other since their marriage, and the most they had talked about was yesterday and this morning.
After a few polite exchanges, the only sounds left in the main room were the two of them eating.
Su Xieqiu had already eaten a full breakfast in the space, with a lot of cucumbers and tomatoes, so she wasn’t very hungry now.
She ate an omelet, picked up a few pieces of mixed cucumber, and then put down her chopsticks.
Han Zhenyu noticed that she had only eaten a little and asked politely, “Why don’t you eat anymore? Are you feeling unwell?”
Su Xieqiu smiled and shook her head, pushing the omelet towards him. “I ate a lot in the morning, including plenty of cucumbers and tomatoes. I’m not that hungry now, so you can have it.”
Han Zhenyu paused as he looked at the plate of omelets, wondering how cucumbers and tomatoes could fill her up.
Could it be that she said this on purpose to make him eat more?
Thinking this, he pushed the omelet towards her again, “Eat some more, I can’t finish this much by myself.”
“It’s okay, just leave some if you can’t finish it.” Su Xieqiu didn’t think much of it and went to the kitchen after saying that.
Han Zhenyu watched her back and thought to himself, this woman has really changed a lot since her head injury.
She speaks more openly now, and her temper isn’t as shy as before. She’s much more pleasing to the eye.
Su Xieqiu didn’t know what he was thinking. She found a gourd, washed it, filled it with boiling water, and told Han Zhenyu to take it with him when he went to work.
Han Zhenyu finished the food, and there were still three pancakes left. He took them to the kitchen and said, “If that old woman gives you trouble, just say that I broke the lock and ate the food, and let her come to me.”
After hearing what he said, Su Xieqiu admired him in her heart, thinking that this man was really responsible, taking everything upon himself.
She smiled and said, “Okay, I got it.”
Han Zhenyu looked at her again, then took the gourd and went out.
Su Xieqiu closed the door, took the basin to Yang Lanhua’s room, scooped a large scoop of flour, and started preparing to make some scallion pancakes for dinner.
Seeing a small basket of eggs nearby, she took six more.
Although there was a lot of food in her space, she couldn’t take it out openly and could only eat it secretly.
It seemed like she needed to find a way to move out of the Han family. It would be best to move to a more remote place so that she wouldn’t have to worry about people smelling the delicious food in the future.
As for Han Zhenyu, even if they didn’t divorce, he was away from home for over 20 days a month, which was almost like being single.
Having a nominal husband made it convenient for her to do things in the future and could also deter those plotting against her. It would be even better if she had her own little yard.
If she divorced Han Zhenyu, she would have to move to the educated youth camp.
In the morning, the team leader said that many more educated youth would arrive soon, and the space in the Youth League Home was limited. If she wanted to live in a room by herself, it might be a bit difficult.
Moreover, the educated youth came from all over the world and had different living habits, causing many conflicts when there were more people.
She just wanted to live quietly and didn’t want to get involved in things that had nothing to do with her.
But she needed to discuss this with Han Zhenyu. Would he be willing? Did he want to move out and live alone?
Su Xieqiu first boiled some water and brought it to their room, then went to the backyard to pick some onions and started making pancakes.
When the Han family got off work in the evening, Han Zhenyu had not yet returned.
Su Xieqiu was sitting in the yard enjoying the cool air, leisurely eating a cucumber in her hand.
Yang Lanhua felt pain just thinking about the 50 yuan she had given her this morning. Now that she saw Su Xieqiu stealing cucumbers again, she pointed at her and started cursing.
“You uneducated little bitch, you picked the cucumber when it was so small, why are you so greedy? Have you never eaten in your life, or are you the reincarnation of a starving ghost?”
Su Xieqiu slowly finished eating the remaining cucumber, then clapped her hands and stood up, saying slowly:
“Look at your shrewish scolding. What does it look like? I heard that my mother-in-law was very virtuous, well-educated, well-behaved, and very capable. It’s a pity that she passed away early, so you get to live in her house, sleep in her bed, and abuse her son and daughter-in-law. Aren’t you afraid that she will come to haunt you at night?”
When Yang Lanhua heard Su Xieqiu calling her a shrew and comparing her to the deceased, she was so angry that she trembled, and her lips turned white.
She was about to start cursing when Su Xieqiu interrupted her. “You vicious stepmother, my husband does such heavy work, but you lock up the food and don’t give him food or water. You point at my nose and call me a bitch when I eat a cucumber.
And your uneducated daughter, who beats and scolds her sister-in-law, is so cruel and ruthless at such a young age. As a mother, you don’t discipline her properly, and you teach her to be cruel to her sister-in-law. Is this the upbringing of your Yang family?”
