Chapter 145 : Wet Bed
When Han Zhenyu saw the captain’s expression, he could tell that his wife hadn’t come out on the losing end.
Still, he felt uneasy, so he hopped on his bicycle and hurried home.
In the backyard, Su Xieqiu was hanging up the mushrooms she had picked earlier. She was about to start making breakfast when she heard Han Zhenyu calling at the door.
She was heading to open it when Chenchen dropped the firewood stick he was holding and ran out. “Uncle Han, you’re back?”
Han Zhenyu nodded with a smile. “Chenchen, why are you up so early?”
“Uncle Han, it’s late! It’s already past seven o’clock. I actually woke up late today!”
Chenchen tugged at the corner of his shirt and asked softly, “Uncle Han, did you see my parents this time?”
“Chenchen, let’s go inside and talk.” Han Zhenyu ruffled his hair with a smile, then pushed his bicycle into the yard.
“You’re back?” Su Xieqiu walked out of the kitchen, drying her hands.
Han Zhenyu gave her a quick once-over, relieved to see she had no injuries. He asked immediately, “Who did you fight with? Did you get hurt?”
Su Xieqiu chuckled and shook her head. “Who told you that?”
“I ran into the captain at the village entrance. He mentioned it.”
With a smile, she teased, “Did he complain? Did he say I was meddling too much?”
Han Zhenyu couldn’t help but laugh, recalling the captain’s earlier expression. “So, what happened? Who were you fighting with this time?”
Su Xieqiu recounted the incident from a few days ago.
Chenchen chimed in excitedly, “Uncle Han, Aunt Su is amazing at fighting! She beat those people so badly they were screaming and crying. One of them even had a swollen face and looked like an ugly monster!”
Su Xieqiu coughed lightly, a bit embarrassed.
Being praised for fighting didn’t feel like something to be proud of, and having Chenchen brag about it on her behalf made her feel awkward.
“As long as you didn’t get hurt, that’s what matters,” Han Zhenyu said firmly. “They deserved it. I’ll head to the old house later and ask the old man if he can manage his family. If not, I’ll take care of them myself.”
“Don’t bother,” Su Xieqiu advised. “The matter’s already resolved, and I even got them to sign a letter of guarantee. They shouldn’t dare to stir up trouble for the next few years.”
Noticing his lingering frustration, she added, “This was mediated by the captain and several village elders. It was fair to us, and Grandma and Grandpa were there too. If you go make a scene now, people might say we’re being unreasonable.”
Han Zhenyu, still heated from anger, began to calm down after hearing her reasoning.
“Fine, I’ll let it slide this time. But if they bother you again, don’t hold back.”
“Don’t worry about the family and just focus on your work,” she said with a grin. “I can handle them.”
Blinking playfully, she added, “If I can’t manage it, I’ll go find my grandparents. They’re way more intimidating than the two of us.”
Her playful demeanor made Han Zhenyu’s head spin. Mesmerized by her rosy cheeks, he had the sudden urge to pinch her face.
But as he raised his hand, Su Xieqiu glanced at Chenchen, coughed lightly, and hurried into the kitchen. “You play with Chenchen. I’ll go make breakfast.”
Han Zhenyu suddenly remembered the child standing nearby.
Feeling a bit awkward, he grabbed the food he’d brought back from the bike and turned to Chenchen with a smile. “Come on, let’s go inside. I’ll tell you what your parents wanted me to share.”
Chenchen beamed with excitement and followed him into the main room.
While cooking, Su Xieqiu listened to Han Zhenyu and Chenchen’s conversation.
“…Your parents are doing well where they are,” Han Zhenyu said. “They have food, shelter, and everything they need. But because they’re working on a classified mission, they won’t be able to come back for the time being.”
“Your dad asked me to tell you that you and An An can stay at our house with peace of mind. Once the mission is completed, your parents will come to pick you both up,” Han Zhenyu said gently.
Chenchen’s eyes filled with tears, but he nodded obediently. “Uncle Han, I understand. Thank you and Aunt Su. My sister and I will be good.”
At this moment, Su Xieqiu smiled and added, “Chenchen is such a good and capable boy. Yesterday, he went to the fields with Xiaogoudan and the others to pick beans.”
Han Zhenyu playfully pinched Chenchen’s nose and praised him in a surprised tone, “Really? Chenchen is so amazing! You’re even helping to gather food for the family now.”
“Of course! I picked quite a lot!” Chenchen replied proudly.
The couple’s coordinated praise made Chenchen blush with embarrassment.
“Uncle Han, Aunt Su, let me check if my sister is awake,” Chenchen said, quickly running toward the main room.
Han Zhenyu and Su Xieqiu chuckled, but before their laughter faded, Chenchen called out loudly from the bedroom, “Auntie Su! My sister peed on the bed!”
“She wet the bed?” Su Xieqiu exclaimed, hastily setting down the dishes and rushing to the bedroom.
Seeing the damp spot on the kang and An An grinning mischievously, Su Xieqiu sighed helplessly. “Why did you have to pee on the bed, you little rascal?”
Han Zhenyu followed her into the room, smiling. He picked up An An to change her clothes and then removed the quilt from the kang.
“I’ll take the quilt to the backyard to dry in the sun and wash the clothes later,” Han Zhenyu said.
Su Xieqiu quickly interjected, “If you dry it like that, it’ll smell. Take it down, wash it properly, and then we’ll put it back on.”
She lightly patted An An’s bottom and teased, “You little troublemaker! Peeing on the kang, aren’t you ashamed?”
An An didn’t understand shame yet. She giggled and snuggled into Su Xieqiu’s arms. “Auntie, I’m hungry. An An wants food!”
“You’ve wet the kang, and now you want to eat?” Su Xieqiu teased with a smile. “No eggs for you this morning. You’ll have to give your eggs to your brother as punishment.”
Hearing the word “eggs,” An An’s mouth started to water. She clung to Su Xieqiu’s neck and begged, “Eat, eat eggs!”
Chenchen sighed dramatically and put on a serious expression to scold his sister. “An An, why are you so naughty? Didn’t I tell you to call out if you need to pee? How could you wet the kang? You ruined the new quilt!”
Chenchen felt both embarrassed and worried. He didn’t want to cause trouble for Aunt Su and Uncle Han and was afraid they might be upset.
Now, he felt like giving his sister a good scolding. Why couldn’t she behave?
Su Xieqiu smiled and patted his head. “You silly boy, what do you know at your age? Bedwetting isn’t a big deal. We’ll just wash it. Didn’t you wet the bed when you were little?”
Chenchen shook his head quickly. “No way, Aunt Su! I never wet the bed!”
Su Xieqiu gave him a playful look of disbelief and picked up An An.
“Come on, help me light the fire. Let your Uncle Han handle washing the quilt,” she said.
Seeing that she wasn’t angry, Chenchen finally relaxed and followed her to the kitchen with a grin.
Meanwhile, Han Zhenyu cleaned the kang, removed the quilt cover, and took it to the backyard well to wash.
