Chapter 53 : Falling into the water and being rescued
With Grandpa Du and Uncle Du overseeing the work, the house was built very quickly.
It only took ten days to begin covering the roof and laying tiles.
Their yard was near the mountains, and they were worried about wild animals coming down in the winter.
Grandpa Du had the courtyard wall built higher, making it similar to the outer wall of his neighbor Sun Dahan’s house.
Grandpa Du looked at the large tiled houses and said to Su Xieqiu with a smile, “Zhenyu’s wife, we can finish the tiled houses today. I will pay them their wages later and won’t have them come tomorrow. Your uncle, your eldest uncle, and I will handle the rest of the work in a few days.”
Su Xieqiu thought for a moment and said, “Grandpa, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Let Han Lei, Sun Dashu, and Sun Dahan work for two more days. This way, you, my uncle, and my eldest uncle can have some relief.”
The three of them have been very helpful and concerned during this time, so they should stick with us until the end.
Besides, having more people will help complete the work faster.
“That’s fine. Your uncle, I, and your uncle will build the kang and the stove, and we’ll let them handle the odd jobs.”
Grandpa Du looked at her with admiration, feeling that this girl was capable of getting things done well.
Han Shengwen and his father, Carpenter Han, came over again to measure the size of the gate.
“Uncle Han, the furniture can wait. Could you help me install the front door and the main hall door first?” Su Xieqiu asked.
Carpenter Han nodded. “Okay, no problem. The doors and windows of the main room are almost done. I’ll get the materials for the main door when I get back and help you install it as soon as possible.”
“Thank you for your hard work, Uncle Han.”
Carpenter Han smiled and said, “It’s nothing.”
He hadn’t taken on such a big job in a long time.
Normally, when people in the village build houses, they just make doors and windows. No one would be willing to make furniture, so they’d just make do with what they had.
But it was different for Zhenyu. The couple left the house with nothing, yet doesn’t it all have to be counted?
“Help! Someone has fallen into the river. Someone has fallen into the river! Help! Help!”
Su Xieqiu and Grandpa Du were just seeing off Carpenter Han and Han Shengwen when they heard a woman shouting from the river.
As soon as everyone heard that someone had fallen into the river, they all rushed over to help. Even Grandpa Du ran very fast.
Su Xieqiu didn’t know whether Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi had already taken action.
It had been several days since that incident, and she guessed that the two of them should have almost finished their plans.
Su Xieqiu also followed the villagers and ran to the river.
As soon as they got there, they saw Sun Dabishi dragging a woman toward the shore.
There was an old man behind him, pulling a woman with her shirt unbuttoned.
The woman’s small vest was completely exposed, and the two grapes on her chest were clearly visible.
Zhang Quezi shouted anxiously from the shore “Dad, hurry up, I’m about to faint.”
Zhang Quezi’s father was not tall and was almost 50 years old. It was still a bit difficult for him to help someone get ashore.
Knowing that this woman would be his daughter-in-law in the future, he didn’t dare to touch any places he shouldn’t.
Now, hearing his son say that he was about to faint, he felt a little anxious.
His son had finally found a wife, and he couldn’t mess it up, as he still had to wait for his son’s wife to carry on the family line.
So, Zhang Quezi’s father didn’t care whether he could touch her or not, he just grabbed Sun Yuexian’s shirt and dragged her to the shore.
Su Xieqiu looked at the old man, and Sun Yuexian, who was clutching her chest and exposing her back, was also stunned.
This… this… this… this is too embarrassing.
What she meant that day was to ask Zhang Guizi’s mother or the women in his family to help, but she didn’t say to ask his father to come.
How could Zhang Quezi be so foolish? And his family, don’t they think it through? In this situation, who should Sun Yuexian marry? Whose daughter-in-law should she be?
Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi must have been planning this for a long time, timing the rescue very precisely.
When Cao Min and Sun Yuexian were rescued, they were still conscious but lying there weakly, unable to move, groaning in pain.
Several women wanted to help, but they were too late.
Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi had already run toward the village with the two disheveled women in their arms.
Because Zhang Quezi had a disabled leg, he almost dropped Sun Yuexian to the ground.
Ergou ran over with a smile to help. When Old Zhang saw someone trying to take his son’s wife, he pushed Ergou away.
He and his son carried Sun Yuexian to the village barefoot doctor, fearing that their wife might be snatched by someone else.
When the people from the village saw this scene, they all fell silent.
Everyone in the village knew about the situation of Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi’s family. But no matter what the purpose was, saving people was a real action.
These two female educated youths had almost been seen completely naked, and it seemed most of them would be married off.
Everyone felt sorry for the two girls from the city, but Su Xieqiu was the only one who remained unusually calm.
Because those two women had used even more vicious means to frame the original owner into marrying Han Zhenyu.
What if the person who passed by at that time had not been Han Zhenyu, but Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi?
Or one of those old bachelors in the village?
So what’s the difference between her ending and Cao Min or Sun Yuexian’s?
She didn’t feel sorry for the two women. If they didn’t interfere in her life from now on, she wouldn’t pursue the past.
If they dared provoke her again, she wouldn’t just sit there and wait for things to unfold; she’d use even more ruthless means to deal with them.
Grandpa Du looked at the ridiculous scene in front of him, shook his head, and solemnly advised Su Xieqiu.
“Zhenyu’s wife, don’t come to the river alone in the future, and don’t go to remote places by yourself. People’s hearts can be complicated.”
“Grandpa, I understand.” Su Xieqiu nodded with a smile.
There was no more excitement to watch, and the people who had been gathered by the river began to walk back to the village in twos and threes, still discussing what had just happened.
A disheveled-looking man said enviously, “Damn, how come I didn’t get such a good opportunity? Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi really got the advantage.”
The other man chuckled and said with a frivolous tone, “It wasn’t Cripple Zhang who got the upper hand, it was clearly his father. I just saw old man Zhang’s hand on Sun Yuexian’s chest.”
“Fuck, is that true?” the disheveled-looking man asked excitedly.
The frivolous man was unhappy with the question, “Of course it’s true. I was standing on the shore and saw old man Zhang pinch it.”
Seeing that their conversation was becoming more and more inappropriate, Carpenter Han cleared his throat and said, “Ergou, Niu Dung, shut your filthy mouths. If you keep talking nonsense, I’ll tell your fathers.”
The two weren’t afraid at all. Niu Fen even smiled and said, “Second Uncle, how am I talking nonsense? You and I were standing together just now. Tell me, did that old man Zhang touch Sun Yuexian’s chest?”
Carpenter Han kicked him on the butt, “Get lost! If you keep talking nonsense, I’ll beat you up.”
The men and women in the village didn’t feel embarrassed by these offensive comments. They even joined in on the conversation.
Su Xieqiu quietly observed the villagers who were making fun of other people’s embarrassment.
She thought to herself that if everyone stayed out of the matter, they could talk and laugh peacefully.
Sometimes, people use other people’s misfortunes as conversation topics after meals. It’s human nature.
The original owner must have been talked about and laughed at like this.
Even now, there were often gossips behind her back, calling her shameless and cheap.
They didn’t care how much harm their words could cause to others.
Su Xieqiu didn’t go to the village to watch the commotion.
Whether Cao Min and Sun Yuexian would marry Sun Dabishi and Zhang Quezi had nothing to do with her.
As long as they didn’t provoke her in the future, the past would be forgotten.
Nanping County Machinery Factory
Several trucks slowly drove into the factory’s transport team.
When they returned, they brought some items. Li Shaohua got off the car outside the city, leaving Han Zhenyu as the only one still in the truck.
He parked the truck in a designated spot, opened the door, and jumped out nimbly.
He walked into the office, chatting and laughing with a few drivers.
“Zhenyu, are you staying in the dormitory or going home tonight?”
Han Zhenyu smiled and said, “I’ll go home.”
He had been away for nearly 20 days and was eager to check on how the house was progressing. He wanted to go back and see it.
Yu Huimin heard from her husband that Han Zhenyu would be back today.
She happened to be going to the logistics department to get something and, when she passed by the transport team, she saw several trucks driving in.
She couldn’t help but want to come over in advance to see what her future son-in-law was like.
Her husband had inquired about Han Zhenyu at the transport team some time ago. The leaders had spoken highly of him, saying he would be converted to a regular employee after this trip.
Yu Huimin didn’t recognize him at first, but when someone called his name, she realized that the tall, handsome man was her daughter’s boyfriend.
She was very satisfied after seeing him. She heard he was 22 years old and her daughter was 20, so their ages were a good match.
The only drawback was his family background wasn’t great. If he came from a working-class family in the city, he and her daughter would be a perfect match.
Han Zhenyu noticed an older woman in work clothes staring at him intently. He smiled and nodded.
Seeing how polite he was, Yu Huimin was even more satisfied. She smiled and asked, “Young man, your name is Han Zhenyu?”
Han Zhenyu was a little surprised when she called his name, but nodded with a smile, “Yes, who are you? Is there something you need to talk to me about?”
