Chapter 70 : Personality Change

After breakfast, Uncle Yan Guowei pulled Han Zhenyu aside and said with concern, “I left in a hurry last night and didn’t really look at the two packages your wife gave me. When we got home and your aunt opened them, we were both shocked. Zhenyu, what on earth are you doing? Why did you bring back so many things? Your aunt was so worried that if she hadn’t been unable to leave home, she would have come with you today.”

Han Zhenyu didn’t know what Su Xieqiu had packed, but judging by his uncle’s expression, there must be a lot of things, and they were all good things.

He pretended to be unconcerned and said, “Uncle, I exchanged those things for others in the south. The south is a land of fish and rice, rich in products, and life there is better than here.  I thought I might not get the chance to go next time, so I brought back more this time. We have a large family and we need some of these things anyway, so I asked my aunt to keep some for us.”

Yan Guowei glared at him and said, “Those are indeed good things. Not to mention the supply and marketing cooperatives in the township, even those in the county might not have them. But you can’t buy so many. How much did it cost?”

Han Zhenyu was also curious about what Su Xieqiu had bought.

So he asked tentatively, “Uncle, my wife packed all those things, I don’t know what exactly she packed for you?”

“What? You don’t know? It was all your wife’s doing?” Yan Guowei looked at him in surprise, thinking that it was something from this boy, but he didn’t expect his wife to be so generous.

But when he thought about it, it wasn’t so surprising. During the time Zhenyu was away, the girl had been very helpful, whether it was with cooking or buying things.

She had even bought meat several times for them to take home, which he and his two sons never refused.

Han Zhenyu shook his head and said, “I brought the stuff back that night and asked her to get some for you. I really don’t know what exactly she packed.”

The purpose of him saying this was to show everyone Su Xieqiu’s kindness. After all, these things had been prepared by her.

Yan Guowei whispered, “There are many pieces of cloth of different sizes. Your aunt and your two sisters-in-law said that the material is very good and we’ve never seen anything like it here.

There were also seven or eight kilograms of cotton, five or six kilograms of vermicelli, a large bag of snacks, and a large bag of fruit candies, which weighed at least two or three kilograms.”

Yan Guowei continued, telling him everything, and finally added, “Oh, and there were several dried fish, bacon, canned food, and large sausages.”

Han Zhenyu fell silent after hearing this. Apart from the dried fish, bacon, and canned food, those were things he had brought back.

The rest of the items were bought by Su Xieqiu.

Thinking of the two larger bags under Grandpa Du’s bed, he couldn’t help but clench his teeth.

Where on earth did that woman get all those things?

It looks like I’ll have to go back tonight and give her a good talking-to. She’s so bold that she actually dared to go to the black market.

But he couldn’t let it show on his face, and smiled, saying, “Uncle, since she gave those things to you, it was all from her heart. Go back and tell my aunt to use them. If you need anything in the future, just let me know, and I’ll help you.”

His uncle glared at him and said, “Of course I know you’re being sincere, but I can’t take all these things from you for free. You can calculate how much it all cost later, and I’ll give it to you tomorrow.”

“Uncle, I’ve eaten at your house for several years, and you and aunt have never asked me for money. Now, my wife and I buy some things to show our respect to you, but you’re acting so distant with us.”

Han Zhenyu deliberately smiled and said, “And now I’m married, will you and my aunt stop caring about me?”

Yan Guowei glared at him and said unhappily, “What are you talking about? In your aunt’s and my mind, you, Daqiang, and Erqiang are the same, so why would we ignore you?”

He was speaking the truth. Han Zhenyu had been living alternately at his house and his father-in-law’s house since he was a child.

This child had been very sensible since he was young. Although he wasn’t his biological child, he had long been treated as his own in his heart.

“That’s fine. My own children buy some food and daily necessities for you, and you and my aunt give me money. How could I not feel a little strange about it?” Han Zhenyu said with a smile.

Yan Guowei smiled and nodded at him, “I can’t argue with you. I’m going to work now. I don’t want to waste time with you brats.”

Han Zhenyu smiled for a moment and then followed him to the new house.

The ground had been leveled, and the doors and windows were all installed.

“I’ll clean up the vegetable cellar in the yard today, and it should be almost done,” Han Zhenyu thought.

He walked around the house. It was almost completed, but he hadn’t had a chance to look at it closely yet.

Walking into the room to the east of the main hall, he found a small storage room with a row of shelves inside, which must have been built by Carpenter Han.

Uncle Du came over with some mud to mend the kang and, seeing Han Zhenyu staring at the storage room, smiled and said, “Zhenyu, isn’t this storage room well divided? It was your wife’s idea. She said that food and sundries should be stored here in the future. Your uncle and I both thought it was a good idea, so we separated the space.”

Han Zhenyu nodded. “It’s a good idea. It’s hidden and convenient to put things here. It also looks clean.”

“The row of shelves and cabinets inside were also designed by your wife and made by Carpenter Han,” Uncle Du praised.

“You really are from a big city. You know more than us country people. Even Carpenter Han praised the design your wife came up with.”

Uncle Du spoke highly of Su Xieqiu and finally whispered, “Zhenyu, the wife you married is really great. She’s educated, smart, and generous. The way she speaks and handles things, she’s not like the country girls we’re used to. It’s all thanks to you. I’m afraid no one else could keep her.”

Uncle Du patted his shoulder and said, “Now that the house is built and your wife is sensible, pretty, and considerate, you should be good to her in the future.”

“I know, uncle.”

Han Zhenyu felt that what his uncle said made sense. Since Su Xieqiu had been injured, her personality had indeed changed drastically after she woke up, and she had improved in every way.

He knew in his heart that if Su Xieqiu had been the same as before, with her quirky personality, even if she were willing to live with him, he wouldn’t be happy and would have definitely found a way to send her back to the city.

But now, Su Xieqiu seemed like a different person. It wasn’t just a change in personality, but in her demeanor and aura from the inside out.

There was no trace left of the cowardly, awkward, and annoying person she used to be.

Just then, as if on cue, Su Xieqiu’s voice was heard from outside.

“Han Zhenyu, your colleagues from the factory are here, come out and entertain them.”
