Chapter 29
Is he blind and heartless?
Chi Yao just sat there quietly.
Zhou Zhou didn’t dare say anything. She was afraid if she talked more, she might make things worse.
She took out her phone, looked at Chi Yao, and sent messages to vent her anger in the group chat called “Milk Tea Three Brothers.”
She tagged Cheng Yanran and Dajingzi: “How can you praise a two-timing guy like that?”
On the other side, Cheng Yanran saw the message and felt confused.
Cheng Yanran: “What happened?” [confused emoji]
Zhou Zhou: “Wei Chengyuan was holding hands with his girlfriend while shopping for clothes.”
Cheng Yanran: [shocked emoji]
Cheng Yanran didn’t know what misunderstanding had happened but felt Zhou Zhou wasn’t in a good mood. So he called her on WeChat.
As soon as Zhou Zhou answered, she sounded very angry.
“I’m telling you, he’s a scumbag. I’m so mad. I even spoke well of him to Chi Yao before.”
“Where are you guys?”
“Chi Yao is still waiting for him. This man is really terrible.”
“Do you think he’s blind and heartless?”
“When we had hotpot last time, Chen Jing asked me. I didn’t dare say anything then. I’ve known him for a long time. He often asked me about Chi Yao. If I had known this day would come, I wouldn’t have told him a single word!”
Cheng Yanran: ………..
He could only ask again, “Where are you?”
Zhou Zhou told him the name of the mall. Cheng Yanran said he was still at work, very close by, and would come to pick them up soon.
“Not really…” She wanted to say she was just complaining, and that it was strange why he wanted to come.
Sure enough, Cheng Yanran arrived quickly, about fifteen minutes later.
When he came in, he saw the two girls sitting close together with many shopping bags.
He walked closer and heard some words, “Have you thought it through…?”
He wanted to tap Zhou Zhou on the shoulder, but she looked back, alert.
He quickly gave her the milk tea he bought downstairs. “Just got this, drink it while it’s warm.”
Chi Yao looked up at him and gave a real smile.
“Hi, I’m Chi Yao.”
“Hello, I’m Cheng Yanran.” He held out his hand and greeted them warmly.
Chi Yao took the milk tea from Zhou Zhou and said, “Thank you.”
Her life shouldn’t be controlled by one man. There was a big world out there with many chances.
They had been sitting for a while, enough time to think clearly. There was no need to sit longer.
She took a sip of the warm drink and felt a warm feeling inside her chest.
“I’m fine now. Let’s go back. Or do you want to keep shopping?”
Cheng Yanran looked between the two with a teasing look.
As Zhou Zhou said, Cheng Yanran was quite tall, about thirty years old, but didn’t look like a typical business guy.
He was tall, fair-skinned, and gentle-looking.
She wasn’t just saying this because he was a fellow engineering student, but really, technical guys were more reliable.
Cheng Yanran looked at Zhou Zhou for an answer, but he couldn’t say much — he was just the driver.
“Let’s go back. You just flew for a long time, aren’t you tired? Get some good sleep, and we can hang out again tomorrow.”
Zhou Zhou said this as she bent down to pick up some bags on the floor.
“I’ll take you home. It’s busy here, hard to get a taxi,” Cheng Yanran said, taking the bags from her naturally.
Zhou Zhou thought for a moment. Chi Yao and she lived in the same neighborhood, which was on the way.
But she was going in almost the opposite direction to Ruyi Garden. How would he drive them both?
“Chi Yao also lives in Xixi Villa. You can take her first. These things are hers, and cars can’t enter the neighborhood. It’s not easy for her to take a taxi,” she stood up and apologized to Cheng Yanran.
“Okay, I’ll take her first, then you.”
“Just drop me off at the subway station. That way won’t take so long.”
Did he think he was a rideshare driver?
Chi Yao quickly waved her hand to say she could take a taxi and could carry these things herself.
What a joke — he was obviously here for her best friend. How could she let him take her home?
But Zhou Zhou pushed her along.
“Why be polite? It’s easier for me to take the subway, just a few stops. You go back and have a good shower, get yourself ready. You’re a smart, beautiful, rich PhD. Let’s cheer up, okay? There’s a Chinese saying: The forest is big, don’t hang yourself on one tree. The foreigners say, Carpe diem — seize the day. Sleep well, and tomorrow will be a bright day.”
This was the first time since they met that Zhou Zhou spoke English.
Cheng Yanran stood there, feeling his heart beat strangely and his mouth dry.
Before he could think more, Zhou Zhou called him to catch up and asked where he parked.
“Just nearby on Lvfanzhou Road. The underground parking isn’t convenient, so I parked on the street.”
“This is a no-parking zone. Aren’t you afraid of a fine?”
“Today is Friday, no problem. The street is full of parked cars. Law doesn’t punish the crowd.”
“Okay, let’s go.”
He wanted to say he could drive her, but Zhou Zhou probably wouldn’t agree, so he stayed quiet.
When they reached the street, Cheng Yanran saw a parking ticket on the car window and was stunned.
“Hahaha…” Chi Yao couldn’t help laughing first.
“Ha, looks like the law is strict!” Cheng Yanran tore off the ticket and tried to lighten the mood.
“There’s a campaign for civilization now. You should be careful about parking. Don’t park anywhere you want,” Zhou Zhou said helplessly.
“Okay, Director Zhou.”
Chi Yao laughed and covered her mouth.
Zhou Zhou blushed from laughing but luckily it was night, so it wasn’t obvious.
Cheng Yanran paid the fine and started the car.
Zhou Zhou and Chi Yao sat side by side in the back seat.
“Cheng Yanran, drop me off at the subway entrance,” said Zhou Zhou.
Then she told Chi Yao, “Uncle Wei and Auntie will be happy you’re back. Dress nicely tomorrow and spend time with them. They really miss you and are proud of you. I’ll be busy with my boss tomorrow afternoon, but I’ll invite you out in the evening. I’ll also be home the day after tomorrow. You can come visit.”
“Got it, Director Zhou. I heard your orders loud and clear.”
“Talking too much again.”
Seeing Chi Yao joking again, Zhou Zhou felt a little relieved.
While they talked, they arrived at the subway entrance.
“Zhou Zhou, are you getting off here?” Cheng Yanran asked softly.
“Yes, I’m getting off here. Drive carefully and don’t forget to drop Chi Yao off.”
She looked at the road, got out without waiting for him to open the door.
Cheng Yanran watched her leave and said to Chi Yao, “Wait for me,” then opened his door and got out too.
Through the clear car window, Chi Yao saw the man talking to Zhou Zhou with a kind and patient smile that was hard to ignore.
She didn’t know what they said, but the man’s face lit up with a big smile.
Chi Yao’s heavy heart suddenly felt lighter.
She might not have love, but it was good that her good friend could have it.
Cheng Yanran was good-looking, seemed to have a good personality, and a suitable family background.
If he could be faithful and caring to her best friend for life, that would be great.
After a minute or two, Cheng Yanran got back in the car and asked, “Why do you call her Director Zhou?”
“That’s what she was called before she came back!”
Cheng Yanran was driving seriously but nearly swerved into the grass after hearing that. He slammed the brakes and got back on the road.
Chi Yao was startled. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, just a little accident,” Cheng Yanran hurried to explain.
Those mean old men! Bullying people!
