Tonari no Seki no Satou-San: Chapter 79-2

{Our Table for Two 2}

“You have been wanting to try it?”

“Yeah, I always wanted to eat toast like this. But at home, they said it was bad manners, so I wasn’t allowed to.”

As Satou-san said this, she seemed to remember something and her mood sank a little.

“Our fried eggs at home were always runny, too. So when I put the egg onto the bread, the yolk spilled everywhere, messing up my clothes and the table…”

That’s understandable. It must be hard to eat toast with a runny egg yolk on top. I don’t know how old she was when this happened, but I can easily imagine her getting scolded and looking as downcast as she does now.

“That’s why I’ve always asked you to make my eggs well-done,” she said, putting her hands together in front of me.

“Sorry for making such a selfish request.”

“It’s fine, it’s not a big deal,” I reassured her.

Sure, it’d be easier if both eggs were cooked the same way. That way, if one turned out badly, I could just say, “I’ll eat this one.” But with different cooking styles, I have to be more careful when flipping the eggs.

Still, if this is something she’s admired, it makes me want to fulfill that little wish for her. It’s no trouble at all to go the extra mile.

“That’s an unusual thing to admire,” I remarked.

It’s not so much unusual, but more of a simple, everyday dream—something that felt very much like her. Satou-san averted her eyes, looking even more embarrassed.

“I saw it in a movie once. A girl has breakfast made for her by a boy, and they eat together by the light of a lamp. It’s a short scene, but the toast with the fried egg on top looked so delicious…”

As she spoke, I immediately recognized the scene.

“You mean the one where the girl falls from the sky?”

“Yes! That movie!”

“I see, that’s what it was. Yeah, they were eating toast with eggs on top.”

I vaguely remembered that scene from when I was a kid. I think it happened after they escaped underground from the bad guys.

It was so like her to admire something like that and want to recreate it in real life.

“It looked so tasty. So, I promised myself that once I became an adult, I’d definitely try it.”

Twenty-year-old Satou-san, now an adult, spoke with a sparkle in her eyes.

“And when I finally tried it, it was so good that I felt like I could eat it every day. Of course, it’s partly because you cook so well, too,” she added with a bright smile.

That same innocent charm she had in high school hadn’t changed at all. It was endearing.

“As long as it’s something like this, I’ll make it for you anytime.”

“Thank you!”

She happily resumed eating after I agreed without hesitation.

From across the table, I watched her.

What kind of girl was the one from that movie again? I couldn’t really remember. But watching Satou-san eat her toast, I thought maybe it was something like this.

With her small bites, savoring each mouthful, she slowly ate the toast with the egg on top. Her eyelashes lowered slightly, a faint smile on her lips, looking so happy and content—and it did look delicious.

If she’s going to enjoy her food like this, I’ll keep putting my best effort into making fried eggs for her every morning.

Feeling good, I sipped my coffee as I watched her.

Then, as I brought the cup to my lips, our eyes met again, and she blinked in surprise.

“Um… Is there something on my face?” she asked, wiping her mouth as if worried.

I hurriedly shook my head.

“No, it’s nothing. I was just thinking it looks really tasty.”

I’m still not used to this distance, sitting across from her.

I need to stop staring at her so much, or at least learn how to do it without her noticing.
