Tomorrow is the midterm exam for the third-year high school students, and the exam papers will be distributed by the education bureau, so the school is taking this exam very seriously.
Wei Xiaochi and his classmates’ classroom was repurposed as one of the exam venues. During the last period in the afternoon, the homeroom teacher directed everyone to set up the exam room and move out the extra desks and chairs.
The school gave the first- and second-year students an extra day off, so this week there’s a three-day holiday.
As soon as the school bell rang, everyone happily packed up their bags. The atmosphere was lively, like celebrating the Chinese New Year—except there were no firecrackers.
The homeroom teacher stood on the podium with a smiling face. “Don’t waste these three days off. Study well and review your knowledge. We’ll have a surprise test on Monday.”
Immediately, a chorus of groans erupted in the classroom.
“Why do we have tests every day? Didn’t we just have a baseline exam? Are we supposed to live like this?”
“Please, give us a break. If we keep taking these tests, I’m going to burn out.”
The homeroom teacher pushed up her glasses, her expression enigmatic. “Complaining won’t help. This is to help you adjust to the life of a senior in high school.”
After saying that, she walked out of the classroom with her lesson plan in hand, looking like a retired bureaucrat, her back carrying a sense of accomplishment and honor.
Amid the clatter of backpacks and the noise, Wei Xiaochi calmly zipped up his bag and left quietly.
First, he went to the bike shed to check on his bicycle. It had been parked there since Tuesday, and now the seat was covered with a thin layer of dust.
When he saw it was still there, he breathed a sigh of relief.
He would still have to go to Jiang’s house tonight. During the lunch break, Jiang Zhan had video-called him. Although he didn’t say directly that Wei Xiaochi should come over, his tone made it clear.
Through the time they had spent together, Wei Xiaochi had picked up on the subtleties of how to interact with this young master.
Understanding Jiang Zhan’s hint, Wei Xiaochi took the initiative to say he’d visit later in the evening.
But tonight would truly be the last time. He hadn’t returned home for three days in a row.
Although Fang Yuan hadn’t said anything, Wei Xiaochi knew her well enough. If he kept staying out late, she’d have to report it to Wei Dongjia.
After all, this could be a big issue, and she was worried something might happen to Wei Xiaochi that would be difficult to explain to Wei Dongjia.
The driver was waiting where they always did. Wei Xiaochi turned down a street and saw the luxury car parked by the curb.
Forty minutes later, the car steadily drove into the villa district.
When they arrived at Jiang’s house, Wei Xiaochi thanked the driver, opened the car door, and got out.
Today, it wasn’t Aunt Zhou who opened the door, but a little girl wearing a pink tutu skirt. She had thick, long, curled eyelashes, black and white eyes, and a fair, cute face.
Wei Xiaochi paused for a moment, wondering if he had rung the wrong doorbell.
The little girl tilted her head and looked at him. “Who are you?”
Just as Wei Xiaochi was about to speak, Jiang Zhan walked over and gave him a deep look. “Come in.”
The little girl turned around and called, “Jiu Jiu.”
Jiang Zhan frowned and corrected her, “It’s ‘uncle,’ you dummy. Can’t even say it right.”
The little girl still insisted, “Jiu Jiu.”
Jiang Zhan didn’t bother with her anymore and turned to Wei Xiaochi, who was still standing by the door. “Why are you just standing there? Come in. This is my sister’s daughter, Song Langlang.”
Wei Xiaochi felt the name sounded familiar. Then he quickly remembered that yesterday Jiang Zhan mentioned that the chubby orange cat was raised by Song Langlang. So this was his little niece.
No wonder Jiang Zhan’s phone was filled with all sorts of kiddie games.
Wei Xiaochi silently changed into slippers as Song Langlang looked at him with great curiosity.
The little girl was bold. When Wei Xiaochi looked up at her, she didn’t shy away, her eyes spinning smartly as if analyzing him.
Wei Xiaochi thought that Jiang Tang might also be here, and he regretted coming to Jiang’s house today, fearing he might be interrupting their family gathering.
But to his surprise, it was only Song Langlang here today. She had refused to go home when she came over to hug the orange cat. Jiang Tang couldn’t convince her, so she was left here.
Aunt Zhou was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, and since Wei Xiaochi couldn’t help, he sat on the sofa for a while. Eventually, he couldn’t resist opening his bag and pulling out a math test paper.
Song Langlang was very attached to Jiang Zhan, holding a tablet and sitting next to him, asking him to play games with her.
Jiang Zhan didn’t have much patience, and it wasn’t long before they started fighting.
“What are you picking? The scene is set in winter, and you want to put her in a princess dress?”
Song Langlang raised her chubby little face and said in her childish voice, “Mom wears dresses in the winter.”
Jiang Tang ran a fashion brand and did indeed attend a bunch of events in winter wearing dresses that exposed her arms and legs.
Jiang Zhan was stumped for a moment, his jaw muscles twitching slightly, but he didn’t say anything further.
After a while, he tried again, “Wearing a dress is fine, but why are you putting her in red long underwear underneath?”
Song Langlang gave him an annoyed look and firmly replied, “Because it’s cold.”
“Jiu Jiu’s the dumb one.” Song Langlang hugged the tablet, twisted her little body, and pouted her chubby legs as she climbed down from the sofa. “I don’t want to play with Jiu Jiu anymore.”
Jiang Zhan scoffed, “You can’t even say it properly and you’re calling someone else dumb?”
Ignoring Jiang Zhan, Song Langlang ran up to Wei Xiaochi and blinked up at him.
Wei Xiaochi felt awkward under her gaze, putting down his pen. “What is it?”
Song Langlang handed him the tablet and invited, “Play with me.”
Song Langlang was playing a scenario game, where the tasks involved were designed for children to complete.
This particular task was to deliver food for hibernating bears in the forest. The game also gave a hint that the mountain roads were slippery and that the second snowfall was coming soon.
Wei Xiaochi had played this game with Wei Zixin before and knew the basic rules.
The game was meant to develop the child’s problem-solving skills. Since the game reminded them that the roads in the mountains were slippery, and heavy snow was coming, the task was to choose warm clothing and non-slip shoes for the character.
Jiang Zhan said, “Don’t bother with her. She’s too dumb.”
“Jiu Jiu’s the dumb one,” Song Langlang immediately retorted, then turned back to look at Wei Xiaochi, eagerly waiting for him to play.
There were still three days before the test, so the homework wasn’t urgent, but Wei Xiaochi couldn’t resist the little girl’s pleading eyes. He took the tablet from her.
The little girl seemed to be very sensitive to the emotions of others. Previously, she had kept her distance, but now she immediately snuggled up to him, her little chin resting on his arm.
Wei Xiaochi opened the shoe cabinet on the tablet, and two neat rows of women’s shoes appeared on the screen.
He slowly guided her, “The mountain is covered in snow, so we need to pick a pair of shoes that are…”
Song Langlang’s eyes moved over the shoes.
“Snow is great, perfect for skiing. Too bad there’s no ski sled,” she said with a frown before eventually compromising, “Then, ice skates.”
She tapped on the ice skates.
Wei Xiaochi was a little surprised but didn’t stop her.
Since it was snowing, Song Langlang chose two beautiful little umbrellas. “If it’s snowing, we should use an umbrella. If we get tired walking, we can use them as ski poles.”
Wei Xiaochi realized that Song Langlang had a very different way of thinking.
The reason she chose a white princess dress wasn’t just because it was pretty, but also because it was white. If she encountered other wild animals, she could bury herself in the snow and they wouldn’t be able to see her.
Jiang Zhan splashed cold water on her, “Do you think the wild animals’ noses are blind?”
Song Langlang glared at him. “They are blind, blinded by Jiu Jiu’s stupidity.”
The two began to argue until Aunt Zhou called them for dinner, and they temporarily called a truce.
Wei Xiaochi realized that Jiang Zhan really wouldn’t back down, not even when it came to a little kid.
Maybe that was exactly why Song Langlang liked him so much. After their little fight, it didn’t take long before she stuck to him again.
That night, Song Langlang insisted on bringing her little pink blanket and a fairy tale book to sleep with them.
Jiang Zhan immediately refused, “No, go to your own room.”
Song Langlang stood by the bed, looking pitiful. “Jiu Jiu, I want to hear a story.”
Jiang Zhan’s heart was as hard as stone. “No.”
Seeing that Jiang Zhan wouldn’t give in, Song Langlang turned to Wei Xiaochi, batting her big, black-and-white eyes, her lashes fluttering like two little fans.
She was both cute and pitiful.
Song Langlang sniffled and said softly, “I want to hear a story, please?”
Looking at the porcelain-like face of Song Langlang, Wei Xiaochi’s heart melted. “I’ll tell you one.”
Song Langlang climbed onto the bed nimbly, and with her little bottom, pushed the pillow from the center toward Jiang Zhan’s side.
Jiang Zhan’s face darkened. He lifted his eyes and shot a glare at Wei Xiaochi.
Wei Xiaochi quickly looked away, pretending he didn’t notice the anger. He opened the storybook that Song Langlang had brought and asked, “What story do you want to hear?”
Song Langlang said loudly, “The story of Snow White and the seven Jiu Jius.”
Jiang Zhan gritted his teeth. “Tell her the story of Snow White and the seven Song Langlangs.”
Song Langlang turned her head and muttered angrily, “Hmph, stupid Jiu Jiu.”
Jiang Zhan scoffed.
Wei Xiaochi: …
They really were a pair of childish brats. Who exactly seemed like they were three years old?
Wei Xiaochi flipped to the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He couldn’t help but glance at the little one next to him.
Song Langlang pulled her pink blanket up to her chest. Her little face was soft and fair, and she looked up at Wei Xiaochi with wide, shining eyes.
The alpha on the other side, with his long eyebrows and deep eyes, his features sharp, pulled the blanket up to his chest as well, looking at Wei Xiaochi.
Looking at the two of them, one big and one small, both neatly waiting to hear a story, Wei Xiaochi spoke with a bit of complexity in his voice. “In a distant kingdom, there lived a king and queen…”
As Wei Xiaochi spoke about how the prince and Snow White lived happily ever after, Song Langlang yawned twice and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand.
“If you’re tired, just sleep,” Wei Xiaochi said, closing the storybook.
Song Langlang got up from the bed with a soft voice. “I want to go to the bathroom.”
Wei Xiaochi set the storybook aside, picked up Song Langlang, and carried her to the bedside. She put on her slippers and walked toward the bathroom.
As soon as Song Langlang left, Jiang Zhan snorted. “What a stupid story.”
Wei Xiaochi scratched his ear. “It’s a story for kids…” He didn’t exactly mean to tell it to you.
He didn’t say that last part out loud.
Jiang Zhan complained again, saying it had “no logic” and was “boring,” then awkwardly tugged at the blanket, not even looking at Wei Xiaochi. “There’s no pheromone tonight.”
Wei Xiaochi was stunned for a moment, and his face inexplicably heated up. “It’s here. Now.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Zhan turned his body away, facing the other direction. After a while, he caught a faint, calming scent in the air. He tugged at the blanket and rubbed his chin against the corner of it.
The atmosphere became strangely awkward until Song Langlang came out of the bathroom. Wei Xiaochi quickly helped her back into bed.
“I want to sleep,” Song Langlang said obediently, lying back on the bed and rubbing her eyes.
Wei Xiaochi hurried to turn off the light.
The room fell into darkness. Everything was silent, and for some reason, Wei Xiaochi thought he heard a noise coming from the bathroom.
The quieter the room became, the clearer the sound seemed. It almost sounded like the English version of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
At first, Wei Xiaochi thought it was someone outside playing music, and he didn’t pay much attention to it.
But when the song played three times in a row, Wei Xiaochi started to feel puzzled. Just then, Song Langlang sat up and turned on the nightstand lamp.
The orange light was very dim, just enough to barely make out the outlines of their features. Wei Xiaochi saw Song Langlang press her finger to her pink lips, making a shushing motion.
Wei Xiaochi was confused.
Song Langlang leaned close to Wei Xiaochi’s ear and whispered in a tiny voice, “Turn on the light, but be careful not to wake Jiu Jiu.”
Wei Xiaochi didn’t know what Song Langlang was up to, but he turned on the light in a daze.
The cold, white light filled the room, and the alpha’s eyelids twitched slightly, even though his eyes remained shut. Song Langlang reached out and patted his back.
It was an odd and funny sight, a three-year-old child soothing a near-adult alpha.
Wei Xiaochi unconsciously tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Song Langlang slid off the edge of the bed and padded into the bathroom, her little feet making light tapping sounds. She returned with a tablet and a makeup bag.
The tablet was still playing the English version of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
Song Langlang turned down the volume and placed the tablet at Jiang Zhan’s bedside.
Wei Xiaochi couldn’t help but ask, curious, “What are you doing?”
“I’m going to do Jiu Jiu’s makeup,” Song Langlang said, opening the makeup bag. She carefully picked out a lipstick and gently cradled Jiang Zhan’s face.
“Mom said Jiu Jiu has a problem. Every time he hears ‘Twinkle Twinkle,’ he gets sleepy. He falls asleep after three times, and it works better if you pat his back.”
“I tried it last time, and it worked. You’ll see,” Song Langlang pushed Jiang Zhan lightly.
Jiang Zhan furrowed his brow, showing signs of waking up.
Seeing this, Song Langlang, acting like a little adult, hugged Jiang Zhan and patted his back. “Shh, time to sleep, the dog is coming, the cat is coming, Jiu Jiu will fall asleep now. Shh, sleep…”
Wei Xiaochi: …
Jiang Zhan did indeed fall back asleep. Song Langlang raised her little eyebrows triumphantly. “See? I told you it works.”
Wei Xiaochi felt his temples throb, and reason told him this was like pulling hair from the tiger’s head. If Jiang Zhan woke up, Song Langlang would definitely get scolded, but he couldn’t run away either.
Emotionally… it also told him not to pull hair from the tiger’s head.
Wei Xiaochi reluctantly warned Song Langlang, “If Jiu Jiu wakes up, he’ll be really mad.”
Today, Song Langlang clearly came prepared. She first successfully stayed over at Jiang’s house, then secretly hid the tablet and makeup bag in the bathroom.
To make Jiang Zhan lower his guard, she even had Wei Xiaochi tell her a story. She had clearly put a lot of thought into this and planned it out, so she wasn’t going to give up easily.
Song Langlang reassured Wei Xiaochi, “He won’t get mad. I’ll just take a picture of his makeup, and he won’t dare to be angry.”
Wei Xiaochi’s eyes widened in disbelief. What kind of bratty kid was this? She even knew how to threaten with photos?
Song Langlang opened the Givenchy 888 golden koi red lipstick and applied it, the glittery gold dust catching the light. She carefully put it on Jiang Zhan’s lips.
As her small hand traced the first stroke of lipstick on Jiang Zhan’s thin lips, Wei Xiaochi’s heart skipped two beats, almost unable to bear it.
Song Langlang had years of experience applying lipstick on dolls, and with the influence of Jiang Tang, the number one socialite in A City, her technique was reasonably skilled.
This color was a thin layer of orange, like the glow of the sunset at night, brushing across Jiang Zhan’s lips. The lip line was graceful, exuding a beautiful, ambiguous charm.
Wei Xiaochi’s heart raced, but he was more scared than anything.
“That’s enough, don’t keep going,” Wei Xiaochi said, trembling.
Song Langlang was enjoying herself and shook her little head. “It’s not done, I haven’t done the eyeliner yet.”
Wei Xiaochi almost kneeled down in front of this little tyrant, nervously licking his lips. “Maybe… let’s not do it.”
If Jiang Zhan wakes up, they’ll definitely be in big trouble.
After finishing the lipstick, Song Langlang picked up an eyeliner pencil and, as if professionally, tried to measure Jiang Zhan’s face, seemingly looking for the best way to draw the eyeliner.
Her operation was as fierce as a tiger, but the first stroke was a disaster.
Song Langlang was still a little kid, and her motor skills weren’t as coordinated as an adult’s. Applying lipstick was fine, but eyeliner required precise, skilled movements.
She drew a crooked line, and that’s when Jiang Zhan woke up.
Song Langlang quickly leaned back in fear and then hurried to pat Jiang Zhan’s back.
But this didn’t work anymore. Jiang Zhan’s eyelids slowly lifted, and a faint light poured into his eyes, clouded by sleep.
Jiang Zhan had woken up, his brows furrowed, his face showing extreme displeasure at being woken up.
Even a mischievous child like Song Langlang was stunned for a moment, her big eyes full of surprise.
When Jiang Zhan saw it was Song Langlang, his face softened a little, but his voice was still deep and gruff, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
Song Langlang, the little actress, immediately yawned and threw herself into Jiang Zhan’s arms, her little head popping out from his shoulder. She made a gesture toward the stunned Wei Xiaochi, signaling him to turn off the light.
Wei Xiaochi snapped out of it, quickly turned off the light to cover for Song Langlang.
Jiang Zhan felt something sticky on his lips, like honey. He raised his hand to wipe it off, and a streak of orange-red lipstick appeared on the back of his hand.
At that moment, the light turned off with a click.
In the darkness, an ominous voice rang out from Jiang Zhan’s mouth, “Song Langlang!”
Realizing she was in trouble, Song Langlang quickly wriggled out of Jiang Zhan’s arms and ran toward the bedroom door in the dark.
Upon realizing that Wei Xiaochi and Song Langlang were teaming up to prank him, Jiang Zhan’s anger boiled over. “Turn on the light!”
Wei Xiaochi’s eardrums felt like they were about to burst, his spine chilled.
“Did you hear me?”
Startled by his furious shout, Wei Xiaochi quickly turned the light back on.
The room was empty. Song Langlang had disappeared without a trace, leaving Wei Xiaochi alone to face Jiang Zhan’s fury.
Wei Xiaochi’s mind went blank, and only then did he realize it was too late to run. Jiang Zhan grabbed him before he could escape and threw him onto the bed.
As soon as Wei Xiaochi’s back hit the soft mattress, Jiang Zhan, like a mountain, loomed over him. The shadow cast by his body enveloped Wei Xiaochi completely, like an impending storm.
Jiang Zhan’s long legs pressed against the edge of the bed, trapping the omega beneath him. He leaned down, his gaze darkening.
He wiped his lips again, smearing a large patch of lipstick, and shot a fierce glare at Wei Xiaochi.
Wei Xiaochi, feeling pinned to the bed, could only look up in panic at Jiang Zhan.
His glasses slipped down his nose, and fearing that Jiang Zhan might lash out and break them, Wei Xiaochi quickly took them off and held them in his hands.
Jiang Zhan, though angry, didn’t seem to be as furious as Wei Xiaochi expected. He didn’t do anything unreasonable.
“Why didn’t you wake me up when Song Langlang was doing the makeup?” Jiang Zhan demanded angrily.
Wei Xiaochi didn’t know how to answer.
When Song Langlang did the makeup, he had tried to stop her, but couldn’t. As for why he didn’t wake Jiang Zhan up, maybe it was because he was afraid to disturb him?
Wei Xiaochi couldn’t figure out why he didn’t wake him up earlier. Thankfully, he had enough experience in apologizing, especially when it came to Jiang Zhan.
“I’m sorry,” Wei Xiaochi said, following his usual apology template. “It won’t happen again.”
Jiang Zhan didn’t let up. “Cut it with that excuse.”
Wei Xiaochi froze. His usual method of apologizing wasn’t working anymore.
Jiang Zhan scowled at him. “Next time, I’ll…”
Seeing Jiang Zhan raise his hand, Wei Xiaochi shut his eyes, bracing for impact.
But instead of a punch, Jiang Zhan’s hand simply brushed his lips.
There was a sticky sensation on his lips.
It seemed that Jiang Zhan had wiped the lipstick onto him.
Wei Xiaochi slowly opened his eyes.
The omega’s eyes had a shallow crease at the corners, normally hidden, but when looking up at someone, that fold became particularly noticeable.
As he lowered his gaze, his eyelids seemed to be outlined with a soft, subtle line of color, his long lashes curled gracefully, and his features were delicate and refined.
Wei Xiaochi secretly lifted his eyelids and glanced at Jiang Zhan. The crease at the corner of his eye formed a beautiful curve, like a tempting hook—sharp and upward-turned.
Jiang Zhan’s breath caught, his throat tightening, and before he could control himself, his lips instinctively moved closer.
Wei Xiaochi’s lips softened, and something warm pressed against them.
