The crowd picked up on the sarcasm in her tone and couldn’t help but laugh. Kang Wenqiao’s face turned blue with anger. “Ridiculous! Even if I didn’t graduate from a 985 or 211 university[1]In China, the 985 and 211 projects are government initiatives that aim to improve the country’s higher education system, Project 211 Aimed at training one-third of undergraduates, half of … Continue reading I still graduated from one of the country’s top schools. How could I possibly be inferior to Kuang Ye, who only has a middle school education and used to play games for a living?”
Mu Wan replied, “Of course, you’re no match.”
Before Kang Wenqiao could continue, she tapped the glass turntable with her finger and said to Kuang Ye, “Show them, my tall, rich, and handsome boyfriend!”
Kuang Ye immediately caught on and, surprisingly, stood up in front of everyone. “Everyone, take a look! This man is ‘Little Handsome’—ah no, this man is Kuang Ye!” He laughed at his own joke, and so did the rest of the class.
Placing his hand on his chin, Kuang Ye said, “Look at this face—handsome or not?”
Zhou Yu and Su Lulu immediately cheered, “Handsome!”
He then showed off his height, pulling up his Baidu Encyclopedia profile. “The bio says 1.8 meters, but with shoes, it’s probably even taller. Tall or not?”
This time, the whole group responded, “Tall!”
Finally, he pulled out a bank card. “This card has three million yuan in it—enough to buy a thousand packs of spicy snacks. Rich or not?”
The crowd roared, “Rich!”
After Kuang Ye’s entertaining introduction, Mu Wan smirked and looked at Kang Wenqiao. “Your turn. You think you’re better than my boyfriend? Show us what you’ve got.”
Kang Wenqiao’s face turned red with frustration. He couldn’t possibly match Kuang Ye’s composure and sense of humor, and his flat face and height of just over 1.6 meters couldn’t compare either. In the end, he could only grumble, “Even if that’s the case, his background still doesn’t match yours.”
Mu Wan sneered, “He’s my boyfriend. Why are you comparing yourself to him? Stick to minding your own business and stop meddling in mine.”
She gave him no chance to save face with this sharp remark. Others, also fed up with Kang Wenqiao’s attitude, chimed in.
“Kang Wenqiao, that’s enough. Her boyfriend is right here. Why are you so eager to intrude? Have some self-respect, man.”
“Getting shown up and still acting stubborn—everyone came to catch up and relax. If you don’t want to enjoy the meal, don’t ruin it for the rest of us.”
Someone whispered, “People always talk about gold diggers, but I think there are way more men like him. I would never stoop this low.”
Unable to handle the criticism, Kang Wenqiao stood up and left, muttering as he went, “Fine! Keep licking the boots of the rich. You’re all spineless dogs.”
The group stared in stunned silence. “Uh…that insult applies more to himself, doesn’t it?”
Kang Wenqiao’s sour attitude left no impression other than resentment. Not to mention Mu Wan, even an average woman would never be interested in someone like him.
After Kang Wenqiao left, Meng Dong awkwardly looked at Kuang Ye, regretting his earlier mention of Kuang Ye’s time at the internet café. Kuang Ye, however, didn’t seem to mind. That part of his past wasn’t something to be ashamed of—it wasn’t like he had broken any laws.
Class president Kong Shuai stepped in to smooth things over. “Let’s not let that spoil the mood. Mu Wan, this restaurant is known for its live music performances. I requested a performance, but I’m not familiar with the repertoire. Could you pick some pieces for us?”
The group exchanged knowing glances. See? Even when trying to steal the spotlight, the class president does it with finesse.
Mu Wan and Kuang Ye exchanged a look, both feeling a bit helpless. Before she could decline, the door to the private room opened.
“Hello, did someone request a music service?” asked the performers.
Kong Shuai nodded enthusiastically. “That’s us!”
He had booked the restaurant’s premium music package, which included violin, saxophone, flute, trumpet, and more.
Unexpectedly, a group of musicians—who were also Mu Wan’s employees—walked in and awkwardly met her gaze. But they said nothing and began playing after Mu Wan selected two pieces. The group marveled at the performance, many recording it on their phones.
After the second piece ended and the food was served, the musicians began leaving.
Zhou Yu whispered to Su Lulu, “Didn’t Mu Wan only pick two pieces? Why did they play three? And wasn’t the last one ‘Wedding in a Dream’?”
Su Lulu was puzzled too. “This is just a reunion, right? Did they make a mistake?”
The last musician, overhearing them, turned back to explain. “The final piece was a gift from us to our boss and her significant other. No charge—enjoy your meal!”
All eyes turned to Mu Wan and Kuang Ye, the only couple in the room.
Mu Wan tried to explain, “They’re artists signed to Jian Jia Music.”
The group’s jaws dropped.
Wow. She’s running a business so big that even a casual dinner involves her company’s services.
Mu Wan and Kuang Ye exchanged helpless glances. What they had tried to downplay had now become the focus. If they had known, they might’ve gone to the observation deck instead.
