At the hospital, Kuang Ye rushed into the emergency room carrying Mu Wan in his arms.
“Doctor, she has a very high fever. Please take a look at her immediately!”
The ER doctor saw Mu Wan’s flushed face and immediately became alert. Taking her temperature with a thermometer gun, it read 39.8°C—almost 40°C.
“We’ll arrange for hospitalization and an IV right away. Did the patient eat anything unusual? Any symptoms of abdominal pain or headaches?”
A high fever could indicate other underlying issues.
Kuang Ye shook his head. “I video-called her at 3 p.m. Her complexion looked a bit off, but she didn’t mention any abdominal pain or headaches.”
“Alright. Go handle the payment. Afterward, stay by her side. If anything seems wrong, call a doctor immediately.”
Kuang Ye nodded and went to follow the instructions.
—
Ten minutes later, Mu Wan lay uncomfortably on a quiet, private hospital bed, an IV drip hooked to the back of her hand. Kuang Ye held her other hand, which was hidden under the blanket, his eyes filled with guilt and sorrow.
I’m sorry.
Suddenly, Mu Wan began murmuring in her sleep, her expression uneasy. She was speaking incoherent fragments of words. Kuang Ye leaned closer to catch what she was saying.
“Kuang Ye… Kuang Ye, don’t die…”
“Kuang Ye, don’t die.”
His eyes widened in shock.
—
Mu Wan felt her body heavy and immovable, unable to move her arms or legs. Before her, that familiar face was sinking beneath the water’s surface. She screamed and reached out desperately, but it was all in vain.
“Kuang Ye!”
She abruptly sat up, finding herself surrounded by darkness. Panic seized her as she felt like she was back in that dim, claustrophobic basement. Instinctively, she called out his name.
“Ah Ye…”
Click!
The light in the private room flicked on. Kuang Ye walked in, holding a container of porridge. When he saw her expression, his face changed. He immediately set the food down and rushed to her, wrapping her in his arms.
“It’s okay. I’m here now.”
Mu Wan clung tightly to him, tears streaming uncontrollably as she pounded her fists against his shoulders.
“Where did you go just now? You left me alone in this strange place!”
Sensing her unease, Kuang Ye gently patted her back to comfort her. Instead of explaining that he had gone to get her food, he softly reassured her, “It won’t happen again.”
Mu Wan’s anxious emotions gradually calmed.
Kuang Ye adjusted the backrest of the hospital bed, set up a small table, and placed the pumpkin porridge he had just bought from downstairs on it.
“You didn’t eat dinner, so you must be hungry. Have some porridge to fill your stomach. If there’s anything else you want to eat, I’ll go get it for you.”
Mu Wan glanced around, recognizing the hospital setting. She hesitantly asked, “Am I sick?”
Kuang Ye lightly flicked her forehead. “You had a fever of 39.8°C. What do you think? If I hadn’t come over tonight, who knows if your brain would’ve been fried by now.”
Mu Wan: No wonder I felt so tired this afternoon. I thought it was because of the stress over O Ruo.
But at the thought of O Ruo, her mood sank again. She nibbled at the pumpkin porridge absentmindedly, then looked up at Kuang Ye.
“Do you remember what I said earlier about having something important to tell you?”
Kuang Ye pointed at her IV drip. “We’ll talk after you’re better.”
Mu Wan: “…Fine!”
After a moment, she looked up again. “You said you’d buy me anything I wanted to eat?”
Kuang Ye’s eyes softened. “Yes, is there something you’d like?”
Mu Wan answered decisively, “Crayfish.”
Kuang Ye: “??” He frowned slightly.
“Miss, do you realize you have a high fever and can only eat light food?”
Mu Wan, playing the role of a spoiled brat, insisted stubbornly, “You said anything. I just want crayfish.”
Kuang Ye tried to reason with her. “The crayfish outside isn’t very sanitary. Tomorrow, I’ll ask the chef at the base to make some for you.”
Mu Wan retreated under the blanket, her voice muffled but resolute. “I want it now.”
There’s no reasoning with a sick person.
Kuang Ye: “…”
That night, Mu Wan eventually got her wish and ate the crayfish she had been craving. Kuang Ye meticulously rinsed off the spicy seasoning with clean water, ensuring it was mild enough for her, but he only allowed her to eat five.
Mu Wan pouted. “Just five? Do you think I’m that easy to satisfy?”
Kuang Ye picked up the sixth crayfish, holding it in his mouth as he raised an eyebrow at her. “If you want more, this is how you’ll have to eat them. Do you still want one?”
Mu Wan: “…”
Her already feverish face turned an even deeper shade of red, resembling the bright, fiery hue of the crayfish in the bowl.
“You’re such a scoundrel.”
Kuang Ye leaned closer, still holding the crayfish in his mouth, his teasing demeanor unrelenting.
Mu Wan, worried about passing her illness to him given his upcoming matches, reluctantly gave up. Still, she grumbled in defeat, “You’re so stingy.”
Kuang Ye chuckled as he popped the crayfish into his mouth. “You’re just too careless about your own health.”
The IV medication had a sedative effect, and after their playful banter, Mu Wan began to feel drowsy again. Soon, she lay down and drifted off to sleep.
Kuang Ye, careful not to disturb her, moved to turn off the light. But remembering her earlier unease when waking up, he decided against it and left the light on.
He settled onto the nearby caregiver’s cot, watching her peaceful, sleeping face.
Her earlier murmurs replayed in his mind: “Kuang Ye, don’t die.”*
Wan Wan, is there something you’ve been through that I don’t know about?
