Chapter 101: Shou City 2
“Go!” Wang Zhi said in a low voice after taking a deep breath.
The six of them quickly climbed onto the roof of the yellow bus in the center of the road. As soon as the zombies nearby noticed them, they charged toward the bus, growling and snarling.
Wang Zhi immediately jumped to the front of the bus. Once he stabilized himself, he began shooting the zombies ahead with his pistol. The chaotic cars around them acted as a blockade, preventing the zombies from rushing at them all at once.
The most dangerous part was the sides of the bus. Due to its long shape, many zombies had climbed to the sides, trying to get on. Wang Zhi had anticipated this and had assigned two people to each side. Despite this, the bus was still being rocked by the pushing and shoving of the zombies.
“Liuli, switch with me! Watch the surroundings!” Wang Zhi shouted when he noticed the zombies trying to break through.
The fight attracted more zombies from the area, and soon they surrounded the bus. The zombies on the ground acted like stepping stones, allowing those climbing behind them to almost reach the top of the bus directly.
“Ahhh! Lao He, come help me!” The Fatty, while changing magazines, shouted nervously as zombies began to climb onto his side of the bus.
However, Lao He and Duan He couldn’t help him because they were busy fighting off the zombies on their side, which was the most crowded area.
Once Wang Zhi cleared out a zombie that had gotten too close, he was about to go help the Fatty, but he saw that Liuli had already taken care of a few zombies that were about to climb up.
After confirming the Fatty was safe, Wang Zhi switched to his assault rifle and began shooting again.
Soon, the area around the bus was filled with corpses. The remaining zombies, now scattered and few, were quickly dealt with by the group using knives.
The six of them stood on top of the bus, reloading their empty magazines. With ten extra magazines on hand, they felt more confident. Previously, they had run out of ammo quickly in smaller skirmishes, but now they had enough to handle a much larger threat if needed.
After counting the ammunition, Wang Zhi realized that each person had about 1,000 rounds of ammo. In this first battle, they had already spent 180 rounds. While they could handle small-scale fights, if they encountered a large-scale zombie wave, they would only be able to escape.
“Are we all ready?” Wang Zhi asked, looking back at the others.
“Yeah.” Everyone nodded in agreement.
Wang Zhi jumped off the bus and signaled to move forward, heading toward the next intersection.
Along the way, Wang Zhi passed a school. On the other side of the fence were a group of smaller zombies, all wearing school uniforms. They were grabbing the iron bars, showing their teeth and growling at the group.
Wang Zhi glanced at the fence to make sure they couldn’t climb over and then ignored them.
The six of them moved cautiously toward the next intersection, which wasn’t a crossroad but a T-junction. On the other side of the junction was a residential area with tall buildings.
Wang Zhi looked at the building, a 20-story residential complex, which was the height he had been aiming for.
“Let’s go there!” Wang Zhi pointed to the high-rise building across the T-junction.
“There are more zombies here than at the last junction,” Lao He said, lowering his binoculars with a grave expression.
“Should we just rush through?” the Fatty asked.
“No, we can’t fight here anymore,” Wang Zhi said, leaning against a tree as he observed the intersection. There was no higher ground or advantage here, and the zombies were too numerous.
“Then should we just run across?” Duan He asked.
“We need to make it to the residential area as fast as possible, find a floor with a closed door, and then use the grapple to climb up,” Wang Zhi said, patting the grappling hook on his waist.
“Are you sure the zombies won’t break through the door?” Lao He asked.
“Once we’re inside, we’ll head straight for the rooftop. The zombies will lose interest once we get a good distance away. Plus, I don’t think the building doors will be that easy to break,” Wang Zhi predicted.
“Let’s do as Wang Zhi says. Staying here isn’t going to work,” Su Muxing decisively agreed.
“Fine, I’ll throw a grenade to draw the zombies away. After the explosion, we’ll rush into the residential area,” Wang Zhi said.
After confirming the plan, Wang Zhi pulled the safety pin from the grenade and threw it towards the zombies in the distance.
Boom! The grenade exploded, and the zombies, attracted by the sound, turned and ran toward the source of the blast.
“Now’s our chance!” Wang Zhi shouted, jumping onto a car’s roof and leaping from one to another.
The zombies in the residential area, also drawn by the explosion, turned to follow the group. As they broke through, the group couldn’t avoid the zombies’ frantic swiping arms, but their combat suits protected them from most of the damage. Wang Zhi quickly killed any zombies blocking his path with his knife.
As blood sprayed from the zombies’ bodies, the cold Wang Zhi felt inside seemed to ignite his spirit.
Soon, their rapid pace left the zombies far behind.
Once inside the residential area, Wang Zhi noticed the door to Building 2 was shut tight.
“Let’s go to Building 2!” Wang Zhi shouted and sprinted toward it.
Upon reaching the building, Wang Zhi immediately took out his grappling hook and shot it at the third-floor wall.
Clink! The grappling hook lodged perfectly into the wall.
Wang Zhi pressed the retract button, and with a quick boost, he was pulled up to the hook.
Bang! Wang Zhi kicked the glass of the ventilation window, breaking it, and entered the building.
After the others followed him inside, they saw a group of zombies below, but the creatures lost interest and began to wander again. Some were still clawing at the building door.
“Is everyone okay?” Wang Zhi asked, looking at the others on the stairs.
“If you’re fine, what do you think?” Su Muxing gave Wang Zhi a look.
“I was asking the Fatty,” Wang Zhi grinned.
“I’m fine!” the Fatty quickly waved his hand, eager to show his strength.
“Let’s go up,” Wang Zhi said and led the way up the stairs.
After entering, Wang Zhi wasn’t worried about zombies. If they counted the number of people living in the building, there were at most 120 zombies, and most of the residents were likely out or had locked doors. Therefore, the stairs were almost clear of zombies.
They easily reached the 20th floor, where Wang Zhi climbed onto the roof and looked around the city. The entire area was visible, including cars and zombies on the roads, large shopping malls, hospitals, and small factories in the distance.
Wang Zhi put down his binoculars, took out a signal flare from his bag, and was about to light it when they heard a loud roar from above!
