Chapter 16: The Weak Knife-Wielding Girl
As Wang Zhi and the others sprinted towards the gym, they kept raising their hands to shoot at the zombies closing in from the front. Their running speed wasn’t particularly fast, mainly because their backpacks were loaded with supplies, and they had to continuously clear zombies blocking their path. Behind them, more zombies were closing in, and before long, nearly 50 zombies were following them.
“Everyone, run faster!” Old He, in the lead, shouted.
“This won’t work! We’re going to lead the zombies to the gym!” Wang Zhi realized that they needed to eliminate these zombies, or they wouldn’t be able to shake them off.
“Old He, what should we do?” Wang Zhi asked while running.
“There’s nothing we can do! There’s too many of them!” Old He shouted back.
“Ah! We’re dead! I don’t want to die yet!” The fat guy started his usual crying again.
“Shut up, fatso! If you keep yelling, I’ll throw you to the zombies,” Sakura yelled at him.
“Forget it, let’s use the grenades!” Old He suggested over the radio.
“No, grenades are too loud! The surrounding zombies will hear them and swarm us, and we’ll be surrounded!” Wang Zhi rejected the idea.
Right now, the only ranged weapon Wang Zhi had left was a molotov cocktail. However, each person only had one, and since they were constantly moving, the zombies were also moving, making this weapon less effective.
At that moment, Wang Zhi had an idea.
“Quick! Everyone, head for the sports field!” Wang Zhi shouted.
This was truly a case of favorable timing and location. It was autumn, and the grass was already withered. The sports field had a large area of weeds, so if they could lure the zombies onto the field and throw molotovs around, the whole area would quickly turn into a sea of flames.
When the four of them reached the west side of the sports field, there weren’t many zombies around, and the area was spacious. But already, over a hundred zombies were trailing them. Wang Zhi could feel the ground shaking.
“Quick! Everyone take a side and throw the molotovs!” Wang Zhi ordered.
They reached the center of the field and pulled out their molotovs, aiming and throwing them. The surrounding area quickly caught fire, and the sports field turned into a hellish inferno.
On the roof of the gymnasium, students watched as Wang Zhi and the others jumped out of the office building windows, only to be followed by countless zombies.
“Oh no! We’re finished!” one student said.
“Yeah, I thought they were here to save us, but it looks like they’re just here to die,” another student commented.
“What are we going to do now?”
“Look! They brought a group of zombies here with them!”
“Dammit, are these people idiots? Trying to die and dragging us with them?”
The students were all murmuring among themselves.
“Students with weapons, come help them!” A senior girl with a knife, having seen the zombies following Wang Zhi and the others, looked determined and was about to go down and fight. She wasn’t doing it for the students on the roof, nor for herself, but for the people who had come to help them in this apocalyptic world!
Seeing the hesitant students, the senior girl didn’t say much. She shook her head and turned to head down herself.
“Senior, you can’t go! You’re just walking into death!” one student blocked her path, saying.
“Get out of the way!” The senior girl said coldly, lowering her head.
The student, seeing the determined look in her eyes, immediately stepped aside.
…
On the sports field, the fire gradually died down. Most of the zombies were burned beyond movement, and the ones that survived were dealt with by Wang Zhi and the others with their guns.
Wang Zhi and the others wore high-end protective suits from the Dawn Tower, which were fire-resistant, waterproof, anti-radiation, and even anti-scratching—extremely durable!
When they came out of the field, they were covered in ashes. Though they weren’t burned, the heat was still intense, and they were all drenched in sweat.
“Ah! I can’t believe I killed so many people today, and the best part is—it’s not illegal! This feels great! Haha!” The fat guy started celebrating since there were no zombies left around.
The reason Wang Zhi and the others had intentionally run through the gym was to eliminate the zombies surrounding it.
What they didn’t realize was that their actions were met with harsh criticism from the students on the roof.
Now, as they returned to the gym, there were hardly any zombies left along the way.
When they reached the gym’s entrance, they saw a girl weakly leaning against the door. She was holding a long knife that had already been dulled from repeated use, and there were corpses lying all around her.
Seeing that there were no zombies following them anymore, the girl relaxed, her tense nerves letting go as she collapsed to the ground.
The fat guy gulped upon seeing the girl. “She’s too strong, huh? How can a girl be so violent?”
Wang Zhi, seeing her, understood why some people were still alive.
“Are you okay?” Wang Zhi hurried over to ask.
“I’m fine. Just need to rest for a bit,” the girl said weakly. However, she tried to stand up, but due to exhaustion, she collapsed beside them.
Wang Zhi quickly moved to catch her.
“Thank you!”
“Don’t talk. Eat something first.”
Wang Zhi said, handing the girl a bag of compressed biscuits and a bottle of water from his backpack.
The girl looked at the food and water, and her eyes began to well up uncontrollably. Over the past few days, she had been protecting her classmates but had received the same rations as everyone else. She had been in a constant state of alert, and now her body was clearly showing signs of exhaustion.
The truth was, she could have just saved herself and lived alone, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
If she had done that—taken the food for herself and harmed her classmates—what would have made her different from the zombies?
“Uh… Sakura, could you help her up?” Wang Zhi said to Sakura.
“Hmph! Now you know the difference between men and women. You weren’t saying that when you rushed in to grab her earlier,” Sakura shot him a glance.
After a while, Wang Zhi arrived on the rooftop. It was already around 5 pm, and the sky was getting dim.
Looking at the students with weapons in hand, Wang Zhi’s brow furrowed. In this apocalyptic world, these people’s actions were understandable, but it still made Wang Zhi uncomfortable.
If it weren’t for his mission and the need to keep people alive, he would never have come to save these people.
“Ah! Senior, you’re back! Brothers, sit down and rest for a bit!” One student immediately approached and began fawning over them.
“Are you from the government, here to save us? Amazing! We’re saved!” another student said.
The rest of the students followed suit, showering them with praise.
Wang Zhi frowned and raised his gun.
