“When we save up enough survival points, let’s each pick out a weapon,” Wang Zhi said.
“No need, my military knife is good enough,” Lao He replied.
The chubby man thought for a moment before saying, “I want an automatic rifle—tat-tat-tat—firepower suppression!”
“Do you even know how expensive an automatic rifle is? Not just the gun, but the bullets go fast too. But if you train hard enough, you might be able to get one.”
“Yes! Captain Wang is the best! Time to sleep—early training tomorrow morning!” The chubby man cheered and quickly lay down to sleep.
…
“Talin, the Ancient Dynasty team is back—one wounded, one dead.”
The report came from Sophie, who was in Talin Guang’s room, reporting the results of the Ancient Dynasty team’s mission.
“Who didn’t return?”
Talin Guang slowly asked upon hearing the casualty report.
“Ye Xiang,” Sophie answered.
“Him? Wasn’t he the second strongest in their team? How could he not make it back?”
Talin Guang stood up abruptly.
“Captain, according to reports, he sacrificed himself to save his captain. He got the captain out but didn’t escape himself.”
Talin Guang sighed and sat back down. “Understood. Keep an eye on the wounded—make sure none of them are infected.”
After Sophie left, Talin Guang summoned Adam.
“Talin, you called for me?” Adam arrived promptly after receiving the summon.
“Any movements from the Eternal Doomsday squad?” Talin asked.
“Captain, they have no plans to head out. They are just undergoing routine training.”
“Ye Xiang from the Ancient Dynasty squad is dead!”
Talin Guang turned his back to Adam, staring at the data displayed on the screen.
“What do you need me to do?” Adam asked directly.
“Find out what happened to them!”
“Understood!”
With that, Adam left.
…
The next morning.
As usual, Wang Zhi and his group of five had breakfast and arrived at the training hall. But today, the place was unusually crowded. Everyone was training with grim determination.
“Hey, why is everyone training so hard today?”
Wang Zhi, confused, asked a young man nearby.
“You don’t know? A third-level squad, Ancient Dynasty, went out for a mission and came back with one dead and one wounded. The one who died was Ye Xiang, the second strongest in their team! If we, the second-tier weaklings, don’t step up our training, won’t we just die at the hands of those monsters?”
So that was why everyone was training like mad. If they had to die, they would rather train themselves to death than fall to zombies.
Wang Zhi still didn’t fully grasp the true strength of third-tier teams or what kind of missions they were undertaking. He had no clue what was happening outside. Was he just supposed to keep hiding in the tower, never seeing sunlight? Would the resources inside Dawn Tower last forever? Of course not! When resources run out, won’t the underground dwellers have to venture out for supplies? If the ventilation systems stop functioning due to resource depletion, everyone inside the tower will perish.
Looking at the forced outdoor mission schedule set by Dawn Tower, it was clear that resources were still sufficient. If resources were critically low, they wouldn’t allow a month-long preparation time. Right now, elite teams were more valuable than supplies. These highly trained fighters, built up with so many resources, were irreplaceable if they died outside.
…
“Talin, the investigation is complete. According to Zhang Ming from the Ancient Dynasty squad, Ling Fan and Ye Xiang had been at odds recently over a woman in their team. During their mission, the two of them were assigned to search for supplies together. When they reunited, Duan Qingtian reported that they had been attacked by a horde of zombies. Ye Xiang sacrificed himself to buy Ling Fan time to escape. However, Zhang Ming doesn’t believe this story. He thinks Ling Fan’s injuries don’t look like they were caused by zombies. Instead, they look like injuries from a struggle—likely inflicted by Ye Xiang while resisting.”
Adam reported the findings to Talin Guang in his room.
Talin Guang massaged his temples.
“So, Talin, what should we do?” Adam asked again.
“Ignore it. As long as the energy core was retrieved, that’s all that matters.”
“Understood!”
In the end, Talin Guang chose to turn a blind eye. Whatever happened within their squad was their own problem to deal with.
After Adam left, Talin Guang pressed a few buttons on his screen and connected to a video call.
“Dr. Chen, have you received the new energy core?”
The video showed an elderly scientist with graying hair.
“Yes, we’ve received it. Based on the current power consumption, the system can sustain operations for another two months,” Dr. Chen replied.
“Understood. Thank you for your hard work, Dr. Chen.”
“Haha, Talin, don’t mention it. For the survival of humanity, even if I have to sacrifice my life, it would be worth it.”
“Please take care of yourself, Doctor. Don’t overwork yourself.”
After confirming that Dr. Chen was taking care of himself, Talin Guang ended the call and returned to reviewing various squad reports.
…
In the second-tier training area, the number of trainees continued to rise. Some of the training equipment was already insufficient to meet demand. However, the competitive atmosphere was actually beneficial for training. With so many people present, they could compare themselves to one another, pushing each other to improve.
For women, there was never a lack of men trying to impress them. Many men used training as an excuse to show off their strength and attract attention. Sakura and Liuli were no exceptions. They had already become the two most popular women on the second tier.
Around them, a crowd of men was eagerly showcasing their skills, each trying to catch their attention. However, no one dared to approach them directly.
Everyone knew the two women were different. One carried a sword on her back, the other had two daggers strapped to her thighs. More importantly, both of them had been outside. They had returned from the hell outside. Anyone who dared to provoke them would face serious consequences.
Just as the men were admiring them from a distance, Wang Zhi walked over and took the two of them away.
It was mealtime, and Wang Zhi had come to call them for lunch.
“Damn! Who is that guy? He’s got both of them?”
“That’s Wang Zhi from Sunset Twilight. He was on his first mission and managed to bring his entire team back alive.”
“No way! Just look at him—I bet I could take him down in one punch.”
“Yeah? Then why don’t you lead a team outside yourself?”
“Fine! I’ll go out in two days!”
“Two days? You mean when there’s only two days left before the forced mission deadline?”
“Hey! Watch your mouth, or I’ll beat you up!”
“Oh yeah? You think you’re so tough? Let’s see who wins!”
