Chapter 52: Don’t Be Too Proud

“Captain Jie Xi, does the Dawn Tower have any next steps planned?”

“Yes.”

“Can you share them with me?”

“It’s confidential. What I can say is that we are already researching a virus antibody vaccine. After successful development, if someone who has been vaccinated is unexpectedly attacked by zombies, they will not be infected, as long as the injury isn’t fatal. They will have a chance to survive.”

“Really? That’s great!”

Wang Zhi heard about the vaccine and felt hope surge within him.

“Don’t get too excited. The antibody vaccine is extremely complex. We need a large number of experts in this field, and Dr. Yang Liu is one of them. Besides, this is only an antibody, not a cure. The vaccine can only prevent accidental infection.”

“Then at least we’re a step closer to success!”

“You’re overestimating things. Alright, enough with the heavy topics. Follow me to a place.”

“Ah? Where are we going?”

“You’ll find out when we get there.”

Wang Zhi didn’t know what Jie Xi was planning, but he followed her and Liuli as they walked through the hall, attracting curious glances from passing people. They made their way to the training hall on the third floor, where Jie Xi entered an empty training room. The room was about 100 square meters, with rubber flooring, clearly designed for sparring.

Wait, sparring? Could it be?

“Uh… Captain Jie Xi, what is this?”

“You two, give me everything you’ve got and attack me,” Jie Xi turned to Wang Zhi and Liuli and said.

“Ah? Isn’t this a bit…?” Wang Zhi was about to object, but before he could finish, Jie Xi punched him, sending him stumbling back a meter.

“You won’t get off so easy next time,” Jie Xi said, giving him a moment to catch his breath before continuing.

Wang Zhi realized that Jie Xi was serious, and he would have to go all out to face the captain of the guards!

“Liuli, be careful,” Wang Zhi reminded her, not wanting Liuli to hold back.

As soon as Jie Xi saw that they were in position, she began her attack. With a quick push of her foot, she appeared at Wang Zhi’s left side. Wang Zhi was shocked—he had been about five meters away from her just a moment ago, but in the blink of an eye, she was already at his side. He couldn’t even predict her next move.

Bang! Another strike hit his arm, this time on his left shoulder. He staggered back a few steps and realized that his left arm was now useless.

Just as Wang Zhi staggered back, Liuli raised her unsheathed sword to strike at Jie Xi’s chest. Liuli’s strike was incredibly fast, and Wang Zhi observed that it was flawless, predicting every movement of the opponent, a sure-hit attack. However, the next moment forced Wang Zhi to reconsider his definition of human limits—Liuli’s sword strike was aimed at the empty air, as Jie Xi had already appeared behind her, her hand around Liuli’s neck.

“Stop! We give up!” Wang Zhi shouted, rushing to stop the fight.

Is this what the captain of the guards can do? Jie Xi had taken him down with one move, and even Liuli’s perfect strike, which seemed impossible to dodge, was easily avoided, with Jie Xi moving behind her to deliver a lethal blow.

Can humans really become this strong?

Wang Zhi stood frozen, replaying the events of the past few seconds in his mind.

When Jie Xi heard him call for a stop, she released Liuli and walked over to Wang Zhi. With a snap, she put his dislocated arm back into place.

“Ah!” Wang Zhi couldn’t help but cry out from the pain as his arm was returned to its original position.

“We lost,” Jie Xi said as she looked at Wang Zhi, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t be too proud.”

Wang Zhi was silent. He couldn’t find any reason to argue; in fact, he completely agreed with Jie Xi’s words.

It’s true. He had just stumbled into this place, lucky to have strong teammates, lucky to become a captain, and lucky to complete two missions. These weren’t things worth bragging about. Two months ago, he was just an ordinary person, and now, because of a few kills and some zombies, he had begun to feel proud of himself and was slowly losing himself in this apocalypse.

Now, having been harshly woken up by Jie Xi, Wang Zhi’s eyes gradually refocused. He snapped back to reality and said, “Thank you, Jie Xi.”

Without thinking, Wang Zhi reached up with his right hand to touch the hand that Jie Xi had placed on his left shoulder.

When Jie Xi felt his touch, she instinctively wanted to pull her hand away but held herself back. “Do what you must.”

She quickly withdrew her hand and walked toward the exit of the training room.

“Wait, Jie Xi.”

Hearing Wang Zhi call her, Jie Xi turned around and waited for him to speak.

“How can I get stronger quickly?”

“Heh, do you think there’s a shortcut?” Jie Xi sneered, then turned and walked away.

Is there a shortcut? Of course not. Why did I even ask such a foolish question?

“Liuli, please help me out here.”

Still feeling the effects of Jie Xi’s strikes, Wang Zhi leaned on Liuli’s shoulder as they made their way back.

Back at their quarters, Su Mu Ying and Fatty were lounging on the sofa, watching a movie on Ling Ling Yao. When they saw Wang Zhi and Liuli enter, helping each other,

“Yo, what’s going on? You didn’t get beaten by Captain Jie Xi, did you?” Su Mu Ying joked.

Seeing that neither of them replied, Su Mu Ying sat up from the couch. “Wait, you weren’t really beaten by her, were you?”

Liuli nodded, while Wang Zhi remained silent, heading upstairs and lying on the bed.

“Damn, that woman’s too cocky, right? Dare to hit our Captain Wang!? She must think she’s invincible!” Fatty exclaimed, jumping up from the couch.

“Liuli, you’re telling me that your sword strike didn’t hit, and she actually dodged it and attacked from behind?” Su Mu Ying asked seriously.

She was very familiar with Liuli’s sword techniques, and couldn’t quite wrap her mind around how such an attack could miss.

“Come on, try attacking me with the same motion you used on Jie Xi just now.”

Su Mu Ying stood up, wanting to feel it for herself.

Liuli prepared to strike with her sword sheath, and Su Mu Ying focused on the movement.

Whoosh! Liuli struck! Su Mu Ying dodged!

Su Mu Ying was shocked—she barely managed to avoid that strike. Dodging and moving behind the opponent as Jie Xi did was impossible for her. And yet, Jie Xi had done it so effortlessly.

“By the way, what’s up with Wang Zhi? Did he get beaten and go cry in his bed?” Fatty asked.

“Oh? Then I’ll have to go comfort him,” Su Mu Ying said with a mischievous grin.
