Tower of Dawn: Volume 1 Chapter 60

Chapter 60: The Revenge Plan

“During our mission, we accidentally stumbled upon a camp established by a military unit. The camp housed a group of civilians, so we attempted to negotiate with them, hoping to bring them to Dawn Tower. However, once we entered the camp, we noticed something was off. The civilians were all anxious and fearful. After some inquiries, we discovered that the soldiers had gone rogue. They wore military uniforms but acted like bandits. When we realized the situation, we decided to retreat immediately, but it was already too late. They had set their sights on our equipment. After a fierce battle, only the captain and I managed to escape.” Zhang Ming’s eyes were already red as he recounted the story.

“How many of them were there?”

“About forty armed soldiers and over a hundred civilians. Those civilians lived in misery, treated as mere tools by the rogue soldiers. The captain had good intentions, but people’s hearts are unpredictable. We can’t blame him for what happened.”

“Forty people?”

Wang Zhi furrowed his brow. Managing to escape from a heavily armed military force with just two survivors, even if injured, was still an impressive feat.

From Dawn Tower’s perspective, retreating was undoubtedly the right decision. Rather than making a futile sacrifice, escaping with vital intelligence was the best course of action, allowing others to prepare in advance.

“I will avenge you,” Wang Zhi said after a moment of contemplation.

“What? Captain Wang, you—” Zhang Ming, lying on the bed, was visibly emotional.

Wang Zhi raised a hand to interrupt him.

“I have my own plans, but now is not the time to discuss them. You two should focus on recovering. Once you’re better, we’ll talk further.”

After saying this, Wang Zhi turned and left the medical room with Fatty. As they stepped outside, Lao He and the others arrived, waiting by the door.

“Wang Zhi, what’s going on?” Lao He asked as soon as they stepped out.

Wang Zhi relayed everything he had just heard.

“Avenge them? Why go through all that trouble?” Su Muying asked, dissatisfied.

“First, helping them get revenge will allow Zhang Ming to settle in our team with peace of mind. Second, there’s a massive fortune at that camp. Setting aside the one hundred survivors, just the resources and weapons alone could make us rich,” Wang Zhi explained.

“Are you insane? Do you even know what fighting against forty armed soldiers means? Just us?” Lao He questioned.

“Who said it’s just us?”

“You mean… working with other teams?” Lao He asked again.

“Even if we did, there’s no guarantee they wouldn’t betray us. Plus, how would we divide the loot?” Su Muying analyzed.

“Then what’s your actual plan?” Lao He was still unsure of Wang Zhi’s intentions. Fighting zombies was already challenging enough—going against trained soldiers was another level of danger.

“We won’t collaborate with other teams, but we can work with Dawn Tower.”

“And how can you be sure they won’t stab us in the back?” Su Muying questioned again.

“Yeah, how can you be certain?” Lao He echoed.

“Because our value to Dawn Tower far outweighs the value of this mission. They’ve invested significant resources in training us—not to betray us, but to make us their frontline fighters. If you’re still worried, I can ask Jiexi to find trustworthy people to assist us.”

“Hmm… based on your reasoning, this could work. But how will we split the resources?” Lao He asked after thinking for a moment.

“All spoils will go to Dawn Tower. They can take as much as they want. We only want the survival points from rescuing the survivors. After all, we can’t use the equipment ourselves. Eventually, we’d have to sell it back to Dawn Tower at a depreciated value, so we might as well use it as our bargaining chip.”

“Zhang Ming mentioned there are over a hundred civilians. That means… ten thousand survival points! Damn, even without taking any loot, we can still earn ten thousand survival points. And those civilians will continue generating value for Dawn Tower once they’re there. This is a huge win for both sides! Genius, Captain Wang!” Fatty became increasingly excited as he spoke.

“Exactly. Fatty is right. For us, this is just a minor profit, but for Dawn Tower, the benefits are immeasurable. Guns, ammunition, protective gear, food supplies—these things are worth a fortune. Dawn Tower has no reason to betray us. In fact, they’ll be highly motivated to ensure our success,” Wang Zhi said confidently.

“Yes! Such a great opportunity—there’s no way Dawn Tower will pass this up,” Fatty agreed.

Seeing that Lao He and Su Muying had no further objections, Wang Zhi concluded, “If there are no more concerns, let’s start planning.”

After some analysis, the group finally agreed to the operation.

For this mission, Wang Zhi planned to purchase a sniper rifle. While not particularly effective against zombies, its precision was an absolute advantage against humans.

“Fatty, you and Lao He go grab our firearms and head to the shooting range. Sister Ying, Liuli, and I will buy some bullets and practice our shooting,” Wang Zhi instructed as he walked towards the weapons hall.

He purchased thousands of rounds of various calibers, spending a total of 500 survival points on two full crates of ammunition.

As the three of them carried the crates through the corridors, they attracted envious glances from other teams.

“Wow, no wonder they’re a Tier-3 squad—so rich!”

“Damn, is Captain Wang heading out again?”

“Just training.”

“Listen to that. Just training. Imagine spending this many survival points just for practice.”

“They’re disgustingly rich!”

“I wish I could join their team.”

“Yeah, right. You sleep twelve hours a day—you really think you qualify?”

Along the way, Wang Zhi overheard whispers and even had people try to strike up conversations, though most of them were strangers to him.

At the shooting range on the third floor, they placed the two crates of ammunition on the ground with a loud thud.

“Damn! Being rich feels amazing!” Fatty’s eyes sparkled at the sight of so much ammo.

“Sister Ying, pick a suitable sniper rifle. You’ll need it later,” Wang Zhi said, tossing his access card to Su Muying.

After she left, the remaining four began their shooting practice.

After a few shots, Lao He gradually found his rhythm, achieving an 80% bullseye rate within fifty meters.

As for Jia Liuli, she missed nearly every shot. Clearly, she wasn’t suited for firearms, but Wang Zhi insisted that she practice. She didn’t need to be proficient, but she had to at least know how to use a gun.

After some time, Su Muying returned, carrying a long black case.

“Did you get it?” Wang Zhi stepped forward to ask.

“Yep, it cost 2,000 survival points. Heartbroken, little brother?” she teased as she handed the access card back.

“What the hell? That sniper rifle cost that much?!” Wang Zhi was shocked.

“Tch, what do you know? I used to use this exact model before the apocalypse. Plus, it comes with a classic camouflage design, scope, suppressor, and bipod. Ah, such a familiar feeling,” Su Muying said as she caressed the sniper rifle in admiration.
